February 7th to February 11th


Saturday, February 12th is Abraham Lincoln's birthday! Every American knows President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. "Honest Abe" was born in the wilderness country of Hardin County, Kentucky on February 12, 1809. Lincoln spent much of his adult years in Illinois. Lincoln became president in 1861. Although he hated war, he was drawn into it as he believed it was the only was to save the nation after the southern states declared their secession to the Union.

Monday, February 14th we will celebrate Valentine's Day. When buying Valentine's Day cards, please do not pick out ones that include candy.  Students will not be able to pass out any candy.  Also, there are 23 students in the class. 

Matter Presentation: The in school "field trip" about matter has been moved to the morning of February 14th. The cost of the presentation will be covered with the money from last years canceled field trip (when your child was in 2nd grade). 

The Fourth Week of 2011 at School:
Science: We will continue the study of chapter 4 on ecosystems.  Students will learn about different types of ecosystems such as deserts and grasslands.

Social Studies: We will also finish the study of chapter 3 on culture and immigration.  Look for a study guide to come home.  There will be a test sometime in the week of February 14th. 

Math: This week we will have a "x11" multiplication test on Friday, February 11th. Students should be studying their "x11" facts every night. We will also finish our study of chapter 14 (geometry).  There will be a test on Monday, February 7th.  Then we will begin the study of chapter 15 on congruence and symmetry.

Spelling: This week we will focus on List 16: adding endings. The homework will be sent home Monday and due Friday. The graded test will be on Friday.

Reading: We will continue working on all of our reading strategies, especially identifying main ideas and details as we use various reading materials (novels, short stories, and leveled readers).  We will  read different books about African Americans for Black History Month. 

English: We will finish the study of verbs.  There will be a test on Tuesday, February 8th.  Then we will begin learning about letter writing.

Things to Remember:
Monday 2/7: There will be a math test.
Tuesday 2/8: There will be an English test.
Friday 2/11: We will have a multiplication test and a spelling test. 
Monday 2/14: We will have a Valentine's Day party.
