November 4th to November 8th




We had a boo-tiful time at our Halloween Party and Halloween Parade. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make it possible. 

We will not have school on Friday, November 8th or Monday November 11th.  Please plan accordingly.  

Conferences:  I look forward to meeting with each of you on Monday, November 4th and Tuesday, November 5th for conferences!  

We will be taking a field trip to Downers Grove as part of our Social Studies unit about our city on Thursday, November 7th from 9 am to 2 pm. Everyone will eat at Giordano's restaurant (please send a cold lunch if your child decides not sign up for a pizza lunch). If you would like, though it is not necessary, students can also bring $5-$8 in cash on the day of the field trip. Your student can spend this money at any of the downtown Downers Grove shops. Each student will be responsible for their own money. Thank you!

The Eleventh Week of 2013 at School:

Science: We will continue the study of matter in chapter 11.  

Social Studies: We will continue learning about modern day Downers Grove.  Then we will learn about communities in chapter 12 in the social studies textbooks.  

Math: Students will continue to learn about the concept of multiplication.  They will work on problem solving and using multiplication to find combinations.  

Spelling: There will not be spelling this week.

Reading: This week we will be exploring synonyms and antonyms.  We will also continue to read nonfiction text and find text proof to answer questions about the text.   

English:  We will continue the study of nouns in unit 2.  Students will learn about singular and plural nouns.  They will also learn how to make nouns possessive.

October 28th to November 1st


 

Halloween:  The Halloween parade will be at at 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, October 31st.  Then we will have our classroom party at 1:30 p.m.
Please keep in mind the following guidelines when helping your child pick out a Halloween costume:

1. We only have 15 minutes for costume changes. Please make sure your child can change into his/her costume easily and by themselves. If the costume can be worn over their clothes, then both the time to change and the chances of losing any clothes is minimized.

2. If the costume involves make up, please apply it before your child comes to school. If you send your child in with make up, then your child has to be able to apply it themselves. 

3. Please do not send any weapons (guns, swords, etc.) as part of the costume. Save those for trick-or-treating.

4. We will not have time to change back into our clothes for dismissal. Your child will wear their costume home.

The Tenth Week of 2013 at School:

Science: We will be a chapter 9 test on Tuesday, October 29th.  Then we will begin the study of matter in chapter 11.  

Social Studies: There we will be a history of Downers Grove quiz on Monday, October 28th.  Then we will begin the study of modern day Downers Grove.  

Math:  This week we will begin the study of chapter 4 on understanding multiplication.  Students will be able to explain the concept of multiplication.  Students will also study and make arrays.  They will learn how arrays relate to multiplication.  

Spelling: 
Monday:  Pretest on lesson 10
Homework - Cursive worksheet
Tuesday:  Homework - Write your words fives times each.
Wednesday: Homework - Write sentences using your spelling words.
Thursday:  Post test on lesson 10.  We will take the test on Thursday, so students do not have to study the night of Halloween!


Reading: This week students will read nonfiction articles and find text dependent answers.  We will also continue our Daily 5 program.  The October Reading Log is due on Friday, November 1st.  

English:  The final draft of the persuasive haunted house paragraph will be due on Monday, October 28th.  Then we will begin the study of nouns in Unit 2.  





Things to Remember:
Monday 10/28:  There will be a history of Downers Grove quiz.  

Tuesday 10/29:  There will be a chapter 9 science test.  
Thursday 10/31: We will have a spelling test. Happy Halloween!  We will have our parade and party!
Friday 11/1: The October reading log is due.

October 21st - October 25th 

Thursday, October 24th is an early dismissal day.  Students will be dismissed at 11:00 a.m.  Please plan accordingly.

The Ninth Week of 2013 at School:

Science: This week we will continue the study of weather in chapter 9, lesson 3.  Look for a study guide to come home.  There will be a test in the week of October 28th. 

Social Studies: This week we will continue studying the history of Downers Grove.  Students will learn about the Underground Railroad.  Look for a study guide to come home this week.  There will be a Downers Grove history quiz on Monday, October 28th.  

Spelling: 
Monday:  Pretest on lesson 9

Tuesday:  Homework - Write your words three times each.
Wednesday: Homework - Write sentences using your spelling words.
Friday:  Post test on lesson 9

Reading: We will practice the strategy inferring while reading various texts.  We will also continue our Daily 5 program.  

English:  We will continue our persuasive, descriptive writing unit.  Students will write a paper persuading the class to buy their haunted house! 

Math: This week we will finish the study of chapter 3 on subtraction.  A study guide will be passed out on Monday, October 21st.  There will be a chapter 3 test on Friday, October 25th.

Thursday 10/24:  It is an early dismissal day.
Friday 10/25:  There will be a spelling test and a chapter 3 math test.
Monday 10/28:  There will be a Downers Grove history quiz.

October 14th - October 18th 

Remember Monday, October 14th is Columbus Day and there will be no school.  Please plan accordingly.

The Eighth Week of 2013 at School:

Science: This week we will continue the study of chapter 9.  We will focus on the water cycle in lesson 2.  Ask your child what condensation means.  Have them give you examples of where they have seen condensation.  

Social Studies: This week we will continue the study of the history of Downers Grove.  Students will learn about Chief Waubonsee and Israel Blodgett.  

Spelling: 
Tuesday:  Pretest on lesson 8 (consonant clusters)
Homework - Cursive worksheet
Wednesday:  Homework -  ABC order
Thursday: Homework - Non challenge - Write each word three times
Challenge - Sentences
Friday:  Post test on lesson 8

Reading:  This week we will focus on story structure.  Students will read various stories and identify the characters, setting, and plot.  We will then read nonfiction text.  We will discuss nonfiction text features.  

English: We are going to work on descriptive writing with a persuasive flare as we prepare to write a haunted house story.  The students will try to convince others to buy their haunted house! 

Math: This week we will continue the study of chapter 3 on subtracting large numbers, rounding, and word problems.  

On Wednesday, October 16th students will be tested on their basic math subtraction facts. Students will need to complete 40 subtraction problems in 2 minutes. Students will take practice subtraction tests in the week leading up to October 16th.  If students pass the test before October 16th, then they will not need to take it again.

The Seventh Week of 2013 at School:

Science: We will continue the study of  chapter 9 lesson 1 on where water is found on Earth. Then we will study the parts of the water cycle in lesson 2.    



Social Studies: There will be a hemisphere quiz on Monday, October 7th.  Then we will begin the study of the history of Downers Grove.  

Spelling: 
Monday:  List 7 pretest
               Homework:  entire class - cursive worksheet
Tuesday:     Homework:  entire class - ABC Order
Wednesday:  Homework:  Non-challenge – Write each word 3 times
              Challenge - Write sentences using spelling words
Friday:  List 7 final test

Reading: This week we will continue our Daily 5 program of guided reading groups, listen to reading, word work, work on writing, and read to self.  In addition there will be a Dogzilla comprehension check on Tuesday, October 8th.  We will also write a reading response to Dogzilla.

English: Students will work on descriptive writing by describing a mystery object using their five senses.  Then students will work on descriptive writing with a persuasive flare as they prepare to write a haunted house story.  The students will try to convince others to buy their haunted house! 

Math: There will be a chapter 2 test on Wednesday, October 9th.  Students can review the chapter 2 pages in their workbook and can use their study guide to prepare for the test. Then we will begin the study of chapter 3 on subtracting. This week we will focus on mental math strategies, estimating differences, and problem solving.

On Wednesday, October 16th students will be tested on their basic math subtraction facts. Students will need to complete 40 subtraction problems in 2 minutes. Students will take practice subtraction tests in the week leading up to October 16th.  If students pass the test before October 16th, then they will not need to take it again.
