Miss Pellin's Post
May 5th – May 9th

We had a great trip to the Field Museum on Monday. Everyone enjoyed learning about Egypt, dinosaurs, and many animals. My favorite mummy is on the right. Thank you to all the parent volunteers!

Join the teachers in dressing up for Prairieview spirit day on Friday, May 2nd. Please wear your green and gold!



The Seventeenth Week of 2008 at School:

English: We will be writing letters to our second grade pen pals! We will also have a Chapter 6 English test on Tuesday, May 13th. Students will get a review sheet that can be used as a study guide on Thursday, May 8th.

Spelling: We will work on List # 30. There will be a pretest on Monday, May 5th and on Friday, May 9th there will be a final test.

Reading: Some students will be presenting their Biography Scrapbook on Monday, May 5th. We will be reading the Chocolate Touch Chapter book. There will be a chapter 3 check on Wednesday, May 7th.

Math: Next Friday, May 9th there will be a mad minute division by 7 quiz. Students will continue to work with fractions. This week will focus on problem solving with fractions.


Science: We will continue to study space. Students will learn about weightlessness and how the Space Shuttle works. They will even get to try astronaut ice cream!

Social Studies: We are studying Downers Grove. On Friday, May 9th there will be a test on Chapter 12 and Downers Grove combined. Please use your Social Studies book as a study guide. You can also use the packets on Downers Grove to help your child study for this test.

Things to Remember:
Monday 5/5: There will be a Spelling pretest. The last Biography Scrapbook Presentations will be made.
Wednesday 5/7: There will be a reading check up.
Friday 5/9: There will be a Spelling test. There will be a mad minute division quiz. There will be a Social Studies test.

April 28th – May 2nd

I was pleased to talk to many of your Moms at the Open House last week. Now we get a chance to talk to a Mummy! Or maybe we can talk to Sue (see pictures at right)! We will be taking a field trip to the Field Museum on Monday April 28th! Please remember that their will be a lot of walking. Wear comfortable shoes. Each child should bring $6.00 for lunch at McDonalds unless your child already turned in money for lunch or is bringing a sack lunch.

The lunch staff would like to remind you that you should buy several lunch tickets at once. Do not go to the office to buy individual tickets unless it is an emergency. Please have your child keep an “emergency” ticket in their binder or locker.

On Friday, April 25th dress up in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's or 90's apparel.

The Sixteenth Week of 2008 at School:

English: Pronouns are useful words. We will be exploring their use this week.
Check out some pronouns at right. We will also be working on poetry. Students will be writing "color" poems.
Spelling: We will work on List # 29. There will be a pretest on Monday, April 28th and on Friday, May 2nd there will be a final test.

Reading: Your child has been assigned a date on Thursday, May 1st or Friday, May 2nd for presenting their biography scrapbook. When presenting their scrapbook students should either bring in an artifact or dress up as their person. We will begin reading the Chocolate Factory book to introduce the Chocolate Touch Chapter book.

Math: Next Friday, May 2nd there will be a mad minute division by 6 quiz. During the week we will study fractions. We will compare fractions and examine equivalent fractions.

Science: There will be a test on ecosystems on Tuesday, April 29th. To help prepare for their test, students should complete the Recognize Vocabulary Worksheet that is due on Monday, April 28th. Students can also use their study guide for test preparation. Then we will begin a unit on space!

Social Studies: We are studying Downers Grove. This week we will study recreation and health in our city.

Tuesday 4/29: We will have an ecosystems test in Science.

April 21st – April 25th

I enjoyed seeing many of you at the Prairieview Elementary School Open House. Remember that Thursday, April 24th school will be dismissed at 11:00 am!

We will be taking a field trip to Downers Grove on Monday April 21st! The day will include a bus tour of the town, stops at various historical locations, and a lunch buffet at Giordano's Pizza in Downers Grove. The cost of lunch is $7 for your child. Any parent who would like to join us for lunch is welcome. We should be there at about 11:15 am.

The FifteenthWeek of 2008 at School:

English: We will finish our expository unit and begin the study of pronouns.

Spelling: We will work on List # 27. There will be a pretest on Monday, April 21st and on Friday, April 25th there will be a final test.


Reading: We will continue to work on our biography scrapbook. In these scrapbooks we key on the most important events in the main characters life.

Math: There will be a Chapter 7 test on Wednesday, April 23rd. The Chapter 7 study guide will be due on Monday, April 21st. If your child still needs extra practice go to the end of Chapter 7 and you will find many problems that they can work on. Next Friday, April 25th there will be a mad minute division by 5 quiz.



Science: We will continue to study ecosystems. There will be a test on ecosystems early in the week of April 27th. We will also explore issues with Earth Day.

Social Studies: We will finish studying Chicago. Then we will study Downers Grove in preparation for our field trip to our city.

April 14th – April 18th

We will be taking a field trip to Downers Grove on Monday April 21st! On Friday, April 11th please join me in wearing your favorite baseball team’s tee shirts. On Friday, April 18th we will wear our favorite rock group, choir, or band shirt.

The Fourteenth Week of 2008 at School:

English: Students will write an expository on either “How to Care for a Pet,” or “Things to do on a Rainy Day.” Students will also write poems.

Spelling: We will work on a review of Lists # 18-25. There will not be a pretest and on Friday, April 18th there will be a final test.

Reading: Students should be reading a biography every night this week. Students will be making a scrapbook explaining their biography. We will be reading short biographies in class this week as well.

Math: Students will finish making their graphs in groups using information surveyed from the class. Then we will begin studying probability. Next Friday, April 18th there will be a mad minute division by 4 quiz.

Science: Everyone’s habitat diorama is due Thursday, April 17th. We will continue to study ecosystems. This week deserts and grasslands will be our focus.

Social Studies: We finish to studying the history of Chicago. Then we will begin to study Downers Grove in preparation for our field trip to our city.

Wednesday 4/16: Downers Grove field trip permission slips are due.
Thursday 4/17: Habitat dioramas are due. The Prairieview Elementary School Open House will be from 6:45 pm-8:30 pm.

April 7th – April 11th



Last week we had an assembly about animals (snakes, scorpions, chinchillas, etc.). Everyone enjoyed learning about these amazing animals. I was proud of how well the class did on their adverb and adjective test. If your child has not turned in their “Egypt Unwrapped!” money, please do so before Tuesday, April 8th.

Friday, April 4th will be Prairieview spirit wear day. On Friday, April 11th please join me in wearing your favorite baseball teams tee shirts.



The Thirteenth Week of 2008 at School:


English:
We will continue to work on our expository writing unit. This week students will work to write their own expository paper about a person that is special to them. Each student should bring in a picture of the person they are writing about.

Spelling: We will work on Spelling “List # 25.” On Monday, April 7th there will be a pretest and on Friday, April 11th the will be a final test.


Reading: We will begin reading a variety of biographies. Each student will pick a biography to read. Students will read this biography throughout the week.

Math: We are continuing to work on Chapter 7. Students will finish making their own graphs in groups using information surveyed from the class. Next Friday, April 11th there will be a mad minute division by 3 quiz. So far everyone’s geometry project looks great!

Science: Everyone’s habitat diary is due Thursday, April 17th. We will continue to study ecosystems.


Social Studies: We continue to study the history of Chicago. There will be a quiz on Friday, April 11th. Each student will receive a study guide for this quiz on Monday, April 4th.

Monday 4/7: There will be a “Spelling List #25” pretest.
Wednesday 4/9: There will be a Chicago quiz.
