January 30th to February 3rd




Be sure to watch the 10:00 news tonight on Channel 2.  They will be airing a special segment  on our Lakeview/Prairieview vs. Eisenhower/Lace Cancer Smashers fundraiser!  Cancer Smashers has been extended until Monday, January 30th.  The total money which has been collected at District 66 so far is an unbelievable amount of $6,768.71! 

Valentine's Day:  When buying Valentine's Day cards, please do not pick out ones that include candy.  Students will not be able to pass out any candy.

Marble Party:  The students won a marble party for excellent behavior.  On Monday, January 30th students may bring a stuffed animal to school.

The Fifth Week of 2012 at School:
Science: This week we will focus on Social Studies.

Social Studies: We will begin the study of Chicago. 

Math: This week we will have a "x12" multiplication test on Friday, February 3rd.  This test will only include multiplication problems by 12. It will not have facts from previous weeks.  Students will also have a chapter 21 test on the metric system on Tuesday, January 31st.  Then we will begin the study of geometry in chapter 14. 

Spelling: The pretest on lesson 15 words is on Monday, January 30th. All homework (WB 10 & 11 in volume 2 OR 2 challenge activities) + the cursive sheet is due on Friday when we take our final test.

Reading: There is a vocabulary test on Seal Surfer words on Monday, January 30th. We are also going to practice writing an extended response for this selection. Also, we are going to do a lot of reviewing. The concepts we are going to review are: main idea and details, genre, and synonyms. Then we are going to pay tribute to Black History Month (February) by reading a biography on an African American and making a photo album displaying four major events in that person's life. This is the "Snapshots of African American History" project we will be working on. The projects will be due on Tuesday, February 7th. I am going to give students class time on Thursday, Friday and Monday to work on this project.

English: There will be an English unit 3 test on verbs on Wednesday, February 1st.  Students will also type their autobiographies. 



Things to Remember:
Monday 1/30:  There will be a vocabulary quiz. 
Tuesday 1/31:  There will be a chapter 21 math test.
Wednesday 2/1: There will be an English test on verbs in unit 3.
Friday 2/3: We will have a multiplication test and a spelling test.

On Wednesday, January 25th there will be an early dismissal day.  Students will be dismissed at 11:05 a.m.

The Fourth Week of 2012 at School:
Science: We will finish our study of chapter 9.  There will be a chapter 9 test on Thursday, January 26th.  Students have already received their study guides. 

Social Studies: We will focus on science this week.  We will begin social studies again in the week of January 30th. 

Math: This week we will have a "x11" multiplication test on Friday, January 27th. This test will only include multiplication problems by 11. It will not have facts from previous weeks.  We will also begin our study of the metric system in chapter 21. 

Spelling: This week we will focus on List 14: homophones. The homework will be sent home Monday and due Friday. The graded test will be on Friday. 

Reading: We will practice the strategy of making connections while reading various books including Surfer Seal.  There will be a vocabulary quiz as well. 

English: We will continue the study of verbs.  Look for a study guide to come home this week.  We will also continue working on the autobiographies. 

Things to Remember:
Wednesday 1/25:  Students will be dismissed at 11:05 a.m.
Thursday 1/26:  There will be a science test.
Friday 1/27: We will have a multiplication test and a spelling test.
Monday 1/30:  There will be a vocabulary quiz.

January 16th to January 20th


Remember that Monday, January 16th is Martin Luther King's Birthday. There will be no school, please plan accordingly.

Our two class winners of the Spelling Bee will compete in the 3rd grade Spelling Bee on Thursday, January 19  against the other third grade class winners. Good luck Agne and Oliver!

Students will take the math MAP (Measure of Progress) test on Wednesday, January 18th.  Please make sure students sleep well before the test and eat a good breakfast.

Students can earn a free Six Flags ticket if they read for 6 hours.  Students need to fill out the Six Flags Read to Succed worksheet in order to earn the ticket.  Many students already turned this in.  If your child has not turned it in and would like to earn a free ticket, they need to turn it in by February 1st

The Third Week of 2012 at School:
Science: We will continue the study of chapter 9. Students will study weather in lesson 3.  Look for a study guide to come home this week.  Students will be tested in the week of January 23rd. 

Social Studies: We will focus on science this week.

Math: We will continue the study of measurement in chapter 20.  There will be a test on chapter 20 on Friday, January 20th.  Students received a study guide today, Friday, January 13th.   Students will also have a multiplication "x10" test on Friday, January 20th.  This test will only include multiplication problems by 10.  It will not have facts from previous weeks.  Students will need to complete 26 problems in two and half minutes.  They will receive a study guide on Tuesday, January 17th.

Spelling: This week students will be tested on Lesson #13. We will pre-test on Tuesday and assign the corresponding homework.  The homework will be due on Friday and we will have the test that day also!

Reading: This week we will be targeting the reading strategy of questioning while reading various books in class.  As always, we will also continue to review and refine our work with the other strategies that we have already introduced, but will highlight questioning this week. 

English: We will continue the study of verbs.  Students will also continue to work on their autobiography.

Monday 1/16: This is Martin Luther King's Birthday. There will be no school.
Friday 1/20: We will have a multiplication test and a spelling test. There will be a math test.

January 9th to January 13th

The students took matter into their own hands when the scientists from High Tough High Tech visited our class today. In a program called Matter Matters©, the scientists helped the students discover all states of matter including gas, liquid, solid, and even plasma. In the pictures above students watched the transformation of solid to gas happen right before the students' eyes - sublimation! 

Spelling Bee:  We will have a Spelling Bee in our classroom on Thursday, January 12th.  You will find a list of spelling words that will be used for the spelling bee in your child's binder.  The winner will compete against the winners in the other third grade classrooms at a later date. 

Scholastic Book Orders: I sent home Scholastic book order forms. There are directions attached to the order forms for purchasing the books online, but this is not a requirement. Book orders are due on October 12th. Our class code is J9D78.

Market Day:  Prairieview will be in charge of Market Day on Saturday, January 7th.  If you would like to volunteer please be at Lakeview at 8:00 a.m. on January 7th. 

The Nineteenth Week at School:
Science: We will continue the study of  chapter 9.  We will be discussing the the water cycle in lesson 2.   

Social Studies: We will focus on science this week.

Math:  We will continue the study of measurement (Chapter 20).  We have covered all of the multiplication facts from x2 to x9, but there may be a few your child needs to review and memorize.  Students will be tested on all these facts on Thursday, January 12th. 

Spelling:  We are on list 12: words with the vowel sounds plus r.  A pretest will be on Monday. Homework will be given Monday and due Friday. The final test will be on Friday.

Reading: Students will write an extended response on the story Nights of the Pufflings.  We will also continue working on distinguishing fact and opinion. In addition, we will read different passages and discuss the strategies of comparing and contrasting. 

 English: We will begin the study of verbs in unit 3.  Students will also work on writing an autobiography. 

Things to Remember:
Thursday 1/12:  There will be a multiplication test.  We will have our class Spelling Bee.
Friday 1/13:  There will be a spelling test.
