Miss Pellin's Post
February 4th – February 8th

Good luck to Nick and Darrell in the third grade Spelling Bee on Monday, February 4th. The district spelling bee will be held on Friday, February 8th.


Remember to wear a shirt with your favorite pro football team on Friday, February 1st in honor of the Super Bowl. On Friday, February 8th join me in wearing Prairieview School spirit wear.




Students do NOT need to bring their lunch on Monday, February 4th due to Jack's mom treating the class with pizza for Culture Day! Thank you to all the parents for helping make Culture Day special!

The Fifth Week of 2008 at School:

English: We are finishing work on our first letter. Students should bring the address of their letter recipient and two stamps. One stamp will be for this letter; the second will be for our next letter writing project. We will work on proofreading letters. We will begin writing a letter to a celebrity.

Spelling: The Review Spelling Test has been moved to Monday, February 4th. Spelling List #18 will be the subject of a pretest on Monday, February 4th and a final test on Friday, February 8th.

Reading: We will continue to summarize different chapters from True Animal Stories. Then we will start Lesson 5 in our Illinois Reading Workbook.

Math: The mad minute quiz on 8’s will be moved to next Friday, February 15th. Please help your child practice these multiplication facts throughout the week. Try using flash cards (make sure you mix them up to vary the order). We will continue to study the mathematics of measurement in Chapter 4. This week we will concentrate on temperature in Fahrenheit and capacity in gallons, quarts, pints, cups etc.

Social Studies: The Chapter 3 Test has been moved to Wednesday, February 6th. Also, Culture Day has been moved to Monday, February 4th. Thank-you to all the parents who are making Culture Day special!

Science: We will continue our unit on the study of animals. This week we will study mammals focusing on birds.

Things to Remember:

Monday 2/4: There will be a Review Spelling Test and a “List#18”Spelling Pretest. Students will present for Culture Day. Also, the third grade Spelling Bee is today.
Tuesday 2/5: There will be an Institute Day and no school!

Wednesday 2/6: There will be a Chapter 3 Social Studies Test.
Thursday 2/7: There is a 1/2 day Institute Day.
Students will be dismissed at 11 a.m.
Friday 2/8:
There will be a final “List #18” Spelling Test. The district will have a Spelling Bee!
Thursday 2/14: There will be a Valentine's Day Party in the afternoon.

Friday 2/15: There will be a Mad Minute Multiplication Test.

January 28th – February 1st

We are looking forward to the Spelling Bee on Friday, January 25th. The top two students from the class will advance to a third grade spelling bee on Friday, February 1st. The district spelling bee will be held on Friday, February 8th. Keep practicing the words that were handed out and you might be a champion!

Remember to wear a shirt from your favorite vacation spot or state on Friday, January 25th. On Friday, February 1st remember to where a shirt depicting your favorite pro football team (in honor of the Super Bowl).


The Fourth Week of 2008 at School:

English: We will continue to work on letter writing. This will include the structure of the letter and its special punctuation. We are also learning how to address envelopes. We will have a test on verbs on Wednesday, January 30th. You can prepare for the test by completing the verb review/study guide that is due on Monday, January 28th.

Spelling: This week will be a Spelling review week. Words will be drawn from List #9 up through List #16. The test will be on Friday, February 1st. This will be in the same format as the last review over Lists #1-7.

Reading: We will continue to read the story Lost and Found. We will work on summarizing, sequencing, and comprehension. We will also be reading True Animal Heroes. Again students will be asked to summarize what they have read.

Math: We will continue multiplication. This week’s mad minutes will focus on 7’s. Please help your child practice these multiplication facts throughout the week. Try using flash cards (make sure you mix them up to vary the order). We will begin to study the mathematics of measurement in Chapter 4. This week we will concentrate on rulers. This includes fractional units such as 1/2, 1/4, and 3/4 of an inch. We will also practice conversions from English units to Metric units and back again.

Social Studies: We will continue studying the traditions and cultures of people around the world (Chapter 3). We will be working on Lessons 4. Culture Day will be Friday, February 1st. Each student should be prepared to share with the class something about his or her cultural heritage. You can find a packet on what to do in each students binder. The Chapter 3 test will be on Monday, February 4th.

Science: We will continue our unit on the study of animals. In the unit, we will learn how to classify animals based on their traits and needs. Mammals will be our key group this week.

Monday 1/28: The verb review/study guide is due.
Wednesday 1/30: There will be a verb test.
Friday 2/1: There will be a Mad Minute Multiplication Test. There will be a
Spelling review test. This will be Culture Day.

January 21st – January 25th

This past week the students learned about past, present, and future verb tenses. Everyone did a great job understanding and applying different verb tenses! On Monday, January 21st there will be no school in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

Our class spelling bee will be on Friday, January 25th. The top two students from the class will advance to a third grade spelling bee on Friday, February 1st. The district spelling bee will be held on Friday, February 8th. Keep practicing the words that were handed out and you might be a champion! Scholastic book orders are due on Tuesday, January 22nd.

Reading: We will begin to read the story Lost and Found. We will work on fluency, sequencing, vocabulary, and summarizing.

Math: We will continue multiplication. This week’s mad minutes will focus on 6’s. Please help your child practice these multiplication facts throughout the week. There will be a quiz on Friday, January 25th. We will have a quiz on logical reasoning and T-charts on Thursday, January 24th. The latter part of the week we will begin measurement in Chapter 4.

Social Studies: We will continue studying the traditions and cultures of people around the world (Chapter 3). We will be working on Lessons 3 and 4. Immigration will be the major topic.


Science: We will begin a unit on the study of animals. In this unit, we will learn how to classify animals based on their traits and needs.

January 14th – January 18th

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday. We are looking forward to a very successful new year! This week we had fun studying the water cycle, and chemical and physical matter changes.

There is a new school policy for students who have forgotten their lunch tickets or money. Each student will be able to borrow a lunch ticket from the office up to twice a semester provided that there is not an outstanding balance due for lunch tickets. If your child needs lunch tickets, they may purchase a ticket for $2.25 from the office staff. Please note that exact change is necessary and that students will no longer be able to borrow lunch tickets from the lunchroom staff.

Remember to wear your Prairieview school clothes on Friday, January 18th.


The Second Week of 2008 at School:

English: We will continue to study verbs. This week we will study future verbs, helping verbs, irregular verbs, and the special verb “be.”

Spelling: We will be studying “List 16.” This list focuses on words that end in “ed.” We will have a pretest on Monday, January 14th. The final test will be on Friday, January 18th.

Reading:
We will begin to study Lesson 4 from the Illinois Reading Assessment Framework Workbook. There will be a quiz on this lesson on Friday, January 18th. Students can study for this quiz by completing workbook pages 80-84 due Thursday, January 17th.

Math: We will continue multiplication. This week’s mad minutes will focus on 5’s. Please help your child practice these multiplication facts throughout the week. There will be a quiz on Friday, January 18th. We will have a test on problems using time on Tuesday, January 15th. Please study pages 126-139. The student study guide is the first checkpoint on page 138. This is due on Monday, January 14th. The rest of the week will be spent using T charts for logical reasoning.

Social Studies: We will continue studying the traditions and cultures of people around the world (Chapter 3). This week we will include discussions of why people move, ancestors, and immigrants.

Science: We will conclude our study of matter this week. There will be a quiz on Tuesday, January 15th. Students should use their study guides to help prepare for this.

Tuesday 1/15: There will be Math test on time. There will be a Science Matter quiz.
Wednesday 1/16: There will be a vocabulary quiz on Egypt.
