December 3rd- December 7th

Happy December! Please make sure students are bundled up for the weather, as we often go outside for recess.  

There will be an early dismissal day on Tuesday, December 4th at 11:00 a.m. Please plan accordingly!

The Upcoming Week at School:

Social Science: This past week students observed and then did an experiment on chain reactions. They also learned how to write a scientific explanation. This week students will investigate non-touching forces. 


Math:  We will finish the study of unit 3, module 2 on comparing, composing, and decomposing fractions and mixed numbers. I have posted fraction videos in Google Classroom, which can help students with their homework. Students will take a mixed multiplication test on Thursday, December 13thThere will be 40 problems with facts ranging from x0 to x9. Students will have 3 minutes to complete the test. Each problem will be worth a half point, totaling 20 points. There will not be retakes. They have received two practice tests.

Spelling: Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, December 7th. Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.  Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, December 7th. 


ELA:  This week students will begin a writing project about being stuck in a snow globe! We will work on writing strong hooks and closings.  Then we will begin our second reading unit titled, Culture and Traditions. The first story students will read is The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco. It tells the story of a special family quilt that started in Russia and made its way to the United States in the early 20th century. They will also read good fit articles and books during our Daily 4 stations. We will finish the study of nouns. 


The November reading logs are due on Monday, December 3rd. Students should continue reading 20 min. each night and fill out their new December reading logs.

We will not have school on Wednesday, November 21stThursday, November 22nd, and Friday, November 23rd due to Thanksgiving! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

The beginning of trimester 2 began this past Monday, November 19th. Grades are finalized and an email will go out soon. 


The class had so much fun on our Downers Grove field trip! In the above pictures, the class is standing front of Pierce Downers's house and the Blogdett's house/Downers Grove Museum! Thank you to our volunteers for helping on the field trip!

The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science:  We will continue our unit on balancing forces.  Students will complete experiments and annotate a book on forces.  

Math:  We will finish unit 3, module 1 on mixed numbers and equivalent fractions.  Then we will begin unit 3, module 2 on comparing, composing, and decomposing fractions and mixed numbers. Students will complete a checkpoint on equivalent fractions. Students will also take a multiplication by 12 test on Thursday, November 29th.

Spelling: Students will receive a new spelling list and should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, December 7th.  Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, December 7th. 


ELA:  We will work on our fluency while performing reader's theater on various myths! I will take video of the students' final products and post them on Seesaw! We will also continue our study of nouns.


Students should continue reading 20 min. each night and fill out their November reading logs. They will be due on Monday, December 3rd

November 12th- November 16th

Happy Veterans Day! Today we had a wonderful assembly where students and staff had the chance to honor our veterans! I want to thank Bella's grandpa for serving our country and being a part of our assembly! 

Downers Grove Field Trip: The class is looking forward to attending our Downers Grove field trip (11/19), which includes a tour of historical sites, the Downers Grove History Museum, and Giordano's pizza (optional). Field trip permission slips and pizza money is due on Monday, November 12th. 

The end of the first trimester will be on Friday, November 16th.  


We will not have school on Wednesday, November 21stThursday, November 22nd, and Friday, November 23rd due to Thanksgiving! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science: The students have been loving our new science curriculum. Amplify.  We will continue our unit titled, Balancing Forces. 



Math:  We will study unit 3, module 1 on mixed numbers and equivalent fractions. Students will also take a multiplication by 9 test on Thursday, November 15th

Spelling: Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, November 16th, which is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break.  Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.  Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, November 16th. 


ELA:  We will continue the study of myths while looking at the plot elements and character traits. We will also study nouns.  

Next week, we will also be working on a writing project pertaining to Thanksgiving.  This past Tuesday I sent home a bare turkey.  Students need to "disguise" him/her so the farmer lets him go!  Students should bring back their disguised turkeys on Monday, November 12th.  It is not necessary to buy any crafty items, just use what you have at home.  I've seen feathers, beads, googly eyes, cloth, construction paper, and just plain old crayons used.  We will complete the writing portion of this project in class.

Monday 11/12:  Turkey disguises are due.  

Thursday 11/15:There will be a multiplication by 12 test.
Friday 11/16: The 3 spelling activities are due and there will be a spelling test.

November 5th - November 9th









We had a boo-tiful time at our Halloween Party and Halloween Parade. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make it possible including our Party Planner/Room Mom, Mrs. Adams. The class had so much fun!

The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science: We will finish our History of Downers Grove unit.  Students received a study guide and the History of Downers Grove test will be on Tuesday, November 6th. I just added a quizlet to Google Classroom, which students can use to help review for the quiz. Then we will begin a wonderful program titled, Amplify Science. Amplify is new this year and it addresses all of the common core science standards. 

Spelling:  Students will be given their list of words along with a homework sheet with a list of activities. Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, November 16th.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, November 16th

ELA: This week we will be starting the study of Myths. We will read about the 12 gods of Olympus and King Midas. We will study cause and effect as well as story mapping. Furthermore, adverbs will be explored. We will also be completing Daily Oral Language (D.O.L.) focused on month abbreviations and commas in a series. Students will receive a study guide on Monday, November 5th. There will be a D.O.L. Quiz on Friday, November 9th. 

Have you seen your child's November reading log? They should have it and already started reading!

Math: We will finish our study of unit 2. Students have received a study guide and it is due on Wednesday, November 7th. Students will take the Unit 2 test on Thursday, November 8th. We will then begin the study of Unit 3 on fractions and decimals. Students will also take a multiplication by 11 test on Thursday, November 8th 

Things to Remember:
Tuesday 11/6: There will be a history of Downers Grove test. 
Thursday 11/8: There will be a unit 2 math test and a multiplication by 11 test. 
Friday 11/9: We will celebrate Veterans Day! There will be a D.O.L. Quiz.
