January 28th to February 1st

On Wednesday, January 30th there will be an early dismissal day.  Students will be dismissed at 11:00 a.m.

Our two class winners of the Spelling Bee will compete in the 3rd grade Spelling Bee on Monday, January 28th against the other third grade class winners. Good luck Gabrielle and Hajira!

The Fourth Week of 2013 at School:
Science: We will finish our study of chapter 11 on matter.  Look for a study guide to come home this week.  There will be a test in the week of 2/4.  

Social Studies: We will continue the study of chapter 3 titled People Move from Place to Place.

Math: We will continue our study of chapter 14.  Look for a study guide to come home this week.  There will be a test on 2/4.  

Spelling: 
Monday:  Pretest on lesson 16
Homework - Cursive worksheet
Tuesday:  Homework - Non challenge ABC order
Challenge - Activity 1 
Wednesday: Homework - Non challenge - Write each word in a sentence.
Challenge - Activity 2
Friday:  Post test on lesson 16

Reading: This week we will continue targeting the reading strategies of predicting and summarizing.  Students will continue reading their good fit books while applying these strategies.  Students MAP reading test scores are in their reading folder in their binder.  Included on their MAP sheet is a new lexile level.  You can use www.lexile.com to help your child find good fit books which interest them. 

English: We will edit our autobiographies.  Students will add adjectives to their papers.  Then we will type them in the computer lab.  

Things to Remember:
Wednesday 1/30:  Students will be dismissed at 11:05 a.m.
Friday 2/1: We will have a spelling test. 
Monday 2/4:  There will be a math test.

January 21st to January 25th



Remember that Monday, January 21st is Martin Luther King Day. There will be no school, please plan accordingly.

Spelling Bee:  We will have a Spelling Bee in our classroom on Thursday, January 24th.  You will find a list of spelling words that will be used for the spelling bee in your child's binder.  The winner and runner-up will compete against the winners in the other third grade classrooms at a later date.  

Students can earn a free Six Flags ticket if they read for 6 hours.  Students need to fill out the Six Flags Read to Succeed worksheet in order to earn the ticket.  Many students already turned this in.  If your child has not turned it in and would like to earn a free ticket, they need to turn it in by February 1st.  

The Third Week of 2013 at School:
Science: We will continue the study of matter in chapter 11.

Social Studies: We will continue the study of chapter 3 titled People Move from Place to Place.

Math:  Students will be tested on chapter 21 on Wednesday, January 23rd We have covered all of the multiplication facts from x2 to x9, but there may be a few your child needs to review and memorize.  Some students will need to retake the test on Tuesday, January 22nd if they have not already passed the test.  Students will need to complete 50 questions in 3 minutes.

Homework - Cursive worksheet
Wednesday:  Homework - Non challenge ABC order
Challenge - Activity 1

January 14th to January 18th
Remember that on Monday, January 21st there will not be school due to Martin Luther King's birthday.    Please plan accordingly.  

Matter Presentation:  We are fortunate to invite scientists from "High Touch-High Tech" to Prairieview.  They will lead students through many experiments involving the different states of matter on Monday, January 14th!

The Twentieth Week at School:
Science: We will continue studying matter in chapter 11.  Students will review the states of matter in lesson 2.   

Social Studies: We will finish our study of local government in chapter 12.  Students will not be tested on this chapter.  Then we will begin the study of chapter 3 titled People Move from Place to Place.

Math:  There will not be math class on Monday due to the Matter, Matters presentation.  Students will be tested on chapter 20 on Tuesday, January 15th We have covered all of the multiplication facts from x2 to x9, but there may be a few your child needs to review and memorize.  The date students will be tested on their facts has moved to Friday, January 18th.  Students will need to complete 50 questions in 3 minutes.

Reading: We will continue discussing fact and opinion while reading the story Nights of the Pufflings.  Students will work on writing an extended response on the story.  There will be a comprehension check on Wednesday, January 16th.  Students will then read various stories and use previous strategies to help with comprehension.  

English: Students will continue to write an autobiography.
