January 31st to February 4th


I really enjoyed hearing the culture day presentations.  The work and effort that the students put in really showed!  I look forward to hearing the remaining presentations on Monday!

Matter Presentation: We will have an in school "field trip" about matter on Wed. 2/2. The cost of the presentation will be covered with the money from last years canceled field trip (when your child was in 2nd grade). 

Valentine's Day:  When buying Valentine's Day cards, please do not pick out ones that include candy.  Students will not be able to pass out any candy.  Also, there are 23 students in the class. 


The Fourth Week of 2011 at School:
Science: We will begin the study of chapter 4 on ecosystems.

Social Studies: We will finish our culture day presentations.  We will also finish the study of chapter 3 on culture and immigration.  Look for a study guide to come home.  There will be a test sometime in the week of February 7th. 

Math: This week we will have a "x9" multiplication test on Friday, February 4th. Students should be studying their "x9" facts every night. We will also finish our study of chapter 14 (geometry). Look for a study guide to come home on Monday, January 31st. There will be a test on Thursday, February 3rd.

Spelling: This week we will focus on List 15: vowel plus r sounds. The homework will be sent home Monday and due Friday. The graded test will be on Friday.

Reading: We will continue working on all of our reading strategies, especially identifying main ideas and details as we use various reading materials (novels, short stories, and leveled readers).  At the end of the week we will begin reading different books about African Americans for Black History Month. 

English: We will finish the study of verbs.  Look for a study guide to come home on Monday, January 31st. There will be a test on Friday, February 4th.   

Things to Remember:
Thursday 2/3: There will be a math test.
Friday 2/4: We will have a multiplication test and a spelling test. There will be an English test.

January 24th to January 28th

Social Studies: We will finish our study of culture and chapter 3 this week. We will focus on how immigrants adjusted to American life. We will be celebrating Culture Day on Thursday, January 27th and Friday, January 28th. Each student should be prepared to share something about his or her cultural heritage with the class. Please take a look at the Culture Day packet that was sent home with your child. Also, please note that students will not be able to bring in any food items. They may use pictures of food instead.

Math: This week we will have a "x8" multiplication test on Friday, January 28th. Students should be studying their "x8" facts every night. We will also begin our study of geometry in chapter 14.

Spelling: This week we will focus on List 14: homophones. The homework will be sent home Monday and due Friday. The graded test will be on Friday. 

Reading: We will practice the strategy of making connections while reading various books including Surfer Seal.


English: We will continue the study of verbs.
Things to Remember:
Wednesday 1/26:  There will be a science test.
Thursday 1/27: Students will present their culture day projects.
Friday 1/28: We will have a multiplication test and a spelling test. Students will present their culture day projects.

January 17th to January 21st


Remember that Monday, January 17th is Martin Luther King's Birthday. There will be no school, please plan accordingly.

Our two class winners of the Spelling Bee will compete in the 3rd grade Spelling Bee on Wednesday, January 19  against the other third grade class winners. Good luck Melanie and Saahil!

The Third Week of 2011 at School:
Science: We will continue the study of matter. Students will learn about chemical and physical changes.

Social Studies: We will finish our study of immigrants this week. We will focus on how immigrants adjusted to American life.  We will be celebrating Culture Day on Thursday, January 27th and Friday, January 28th. Each student should be prepared to share something about his or her cultural heritage with the class.  Please take a look at the Culture Day packet that was sent home with your child.  Also, please note that students will not be able to bring in any food items.  They may use pictures of food instead.

Math: We will continue the study of measurement (Chapter 20 and 21). There will be a test on measurements on Friday, January 21st. Students will not have to memorize conversions such as 1 kilogram = 1000 grams. Rather there will posters hanging up. Students will receive a study guide on Tuesday, January 18th.  We are going to go out of order and have a multiplication "x10" test on Friday, January 21st. 

Spelling: We are back to our normal spelling routine next week with Lesson #13. We will pre-test on Tuesday and assign the corresponding homework. The spelling challenge students will only have to pick two assignments from the list and all other spelling students will have a shortened assignment as well due to the 4 day week. The homework will be due on Friday and we will have the test that day also!

Reading: This week we will be targeting the reading strategy of questioning while reading various books in class.  As always, we will also continue to review and refine our work with the other strategies that we have already introduced, but will highlight questioning this week. 

English: We will continue the study of verbs.

January 10th to January 14th




Remember that Monday, January 17th is Martin Luther King's birthday. There will be no school, please plan accordingly. 

Students received words this past week for a school spelling bee. It is up to the students whether they would like to prepare for this. We will have one practice spelling bee in class early next week. The final class spelling bee will be on Thursday, January 13th. The two winners will be selected to represent our class in the 3rd grade spelling bee on Wednesday, January 19th.
The Eighteenth Week at School:
Science: We will continue the study of matter in chapter 11.  Students will learn about the states of matter. 

Social Studies: We will continue the study of chapter 3. We will focus on Lesson 2 and 3 focused on customs and immigration. 

Math: We will continue the study of measurement (Chapter 20). There will be a multiplication "x7" test on Thursday, January 13th.  There will not be math class on Friday due to MAPs testing.

Spelling: Due to MAPs testing this week, we are working on synonym practice during spelling. We will not have a test this week or spelling homework. We will be working on a unit of "snowy synonyms." We will be back to working on Lesson #13 the following week.

Reading: We will continue to work on the reading strategies of monitoring and clarifying what we read as well as distinguishing facts and opinions while concluding our work with the story Nights of the Pufflings or starting a novel study. We will also be reviewing various other reading strategies to comprehend our reading materials.

English: Students will complete the final copy of their narrative paper.  Then we will begin the study of verbs.

Things to Remember:
Monday 1/10: Classes begin after winter break!

Friday 1/13: We will have a multiplication test.
Monday 1/17:  It is Martin Luther King Day!
