January 6th to January 10th


I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday! School will resume on Wednesday, January 8th.  

There will be MAPs testing on January 10th.  Please talk to your child about trying their best! Also make sure they eat a good breakfast and get plenty of sleep.  Thank you!

The Eighteenth Week at School:
Science: We will continue the study of energy in chapter 13.  Also, scientists will lead students through many experiments involving the different states of matter on Wednesday, January 8th.

Social Studies: We will begin the study of chapter 3 on customs and immigration.  Also, we will be celebrating Culture Day on Wednesday, January 22nd and Thursday, January 23rd.  Each student should be prepared to share something about his or her cultural heritage with the class.  Please take a look at the Culture Day packet which will be sent home on Wednesday, January 8th.  The Culture Day planning sheet which will also be sent home on Wednesday will be due on Monday, January 13th.  

Math:  We will begin chapter 7 on Multiplication and Division.  This chapter focuses on multiply/divide by 3, 4, 0, and 1.  There will be a multiply and divide by 3 test on Thursday, January 16th.  I had to change the test date again due to changes in MAP testing days.  We will not have math on Tuesday, January 14th.  

Spelling:
There will not be spelling due to the shortened week. 

Reading: We will begin literature circles.  Students will be given good fit books and practice various reading strategies.    December Reading Logs will be due on Thursday, January 9th.  

English: Students will be writing down their New Year's resolution.  Also, we will begin the study of adjectives.  

Things to Remember:
Wednesday 1/8:  There will be a Matter Presentation.
Thursday 1/9:  December Reading Logs are due.
Tuesday 1/14:  There will be a multiply and divide by 3 test.

December 16th to December 20th


Our class will go on a bowling field trip on Thursday, December 19th. Optional: Students can bring $5.00 if they would like to buy a snack at the bowling alley. Please send your child with a sack lunch on this day.

On Friday, December 20th, the third grade students will watch the movie The Tale of Despereaux at the Tivoli.

The Seventeenth Week of 2013 at School:
Science: We will study energy in chapter 12.  This week we will focus on lesson 1.  

Social Studies: This week students will finish their Christmas around the world poster and present to the class.  

Math: We will finish the study of chapter 6 on multiplication and division patterns.  There will be a chapter 6 test on Wednesday, December 18th.  Students have already received a study guide.  There will be a multiply and divide by 5 test on Friday, December 20th.  

Spelling:  
Monday:  Pretest on lesson 15
Homework -  Cursive worksheet
Tuesday:  Homework - Write words 5 times each
Wednesday: Homework - Write each word in a sentence.
Thursday:  Post test on lesson 14

Reading: Students will compare and contrast different text.  When students return from break, we will begin literature circles.  Students will read good fit books to practice various reading strategies.

English: We will finish the study of verbs in unit 3.  There will be a test on Friday, December 20th.

December 9th to December 13th


Our class will go on a bowling field trip on Thursday, December 19th. You can send your child with money if they would like to buy a snack at the bowling alley. Please send your child with a sack lunch on this day.

On Friday, December 20th, the third grade students with watch the movie The Tale of Despereaux at the Tivoli.  A permission slip was sent home.  Please send this permission slip back by Wednesday, December 11th.  



The Sixteenth Week of 2013 at School:
Science: Students will have a chapter 11 test on Tuesday, December 10th.  

Social Studies: 
We will start a new unit, Christmas around the world.  In this unit, students will work in groups and be given a country.  They will be doing research on that country and then make a poster to present to the class.  They will get to learn about how other countries celebrate this holiday. 

Math: We will being the study of chapter 6 on multiplication and division patterns.  There will be a multiply and divide by 10 test on Thursday, December 12th.  

Spelling: 
Monday:  Pretest on lesson 14
Tuesday:  Homework - Write words 5 times each
Wednesday: Homework - Write each word in a sentence.
Friday:  Post test on lesson 14

Reading: 
We will use various reading strategies while reading The Keeping Quilt.  Students have received vocabulary words.  There will be a vocabulary test and comprehension check on Wednesday, December 11th.  Students will write an extended reading response on The Keeping Quilt.

English: We will continue the study of verbs in unit 3.

December 2nd to December 6th


The Fifteenth Week of 2013 at School: 

Science: We will finish the study of chapter 11 on matter.  A study guide will go home on Tuesday, December 3rd.  There will be a chapter 11 test on Monday, December 9th.  

Social Studies: We will finish the study of chapter 12 on local government.  Students received a study guide today, November 26th.  There will be a chapter 12 test on Wednesday, December 4th.  

Math: This week we will continue chapter 5 on understanding division.  We will discuss inverse operations and then focus on word problems. A study guide will be handed out on Monday, December 2nd.  There will be a chapter 5 test on Friday, December 6th.   Students should also continue to study their multiply and divide by 2 facts.  There will be a multiply and divide by 2 timed test on Thursday, December 5th.  Students went home with an example test today, November 26th.  Students will be given two minutes to complete the test.


Spelling: 
Monday:  Pretest on lesson 13
Homework - Cursive worksheet
Tuesday:  Homework - Write your words fives times each.
Wednesday: Homework - Write sentences using your spelling words.
Friday:  Post test on lesson 13

Reading: The November reading logs will be due on Monday, December 2nd.  Students will pick one fictional and one non-fictional character we have read about and use text proof to support how they have broken through gender barriers.  Then we will begin a new story titled The Keeping Quilt.  Students will receive new vocabulary words and will have a quiz on Wednesday, December 11th.   

English: We will begin the study of verbs in unit 3.

November 25th- November 29th




Happy Thanksgiving!!  There will not be school from Wednesday, November 27 - Friday, November 29th due to Thanksgiving. 

The Fourteenth Week of 2013 at School: 


Science: We will continue the study of matter in chapter 11.  Students will learn about how matter can change in lesson 3.  

Social Studies: We will continue the study of lesson 2 on community leaders in chapter 12.   

Math: This week we will continue the study of chapter 5.  We discuss the relationship between multiplication and division.  Students can begin studying their multiplication and division by 2 facts.  We will have a timed test on these facts in the week of December 2nd.  I will give you more details about the test in my blog next week.

Spelling: There will not be spelling this week.

Reading: Students will present their mirror to the class.  One side of the mirror shows the class information most people might already know about them and the other side shows the class information most people do not know about them.  Students were given a speaking rubric on how they will be graded for the presentation.  It would be great if they could practice their presentation at home.  

English: Students will read their turkey stories to the class.

November 18th to November 22nd 


Prairieview School-Community Service Project Animal Assisted Therapy Program-Edward Hospital
Prairieview School, in Downers Grove, (3rd, 4th and 5th Graders) is proud to have an opportunity to sponsor an Edward Hospital therapy dog, Kodi. Prairieview School will take donations until November 19th!

The Thirteenth Week of 2013 at School:

Science: We will continue the study of states of matter in chapter 11, lesson 2.  Students will do an experiment in order to see that air takes up space.  

Social Studies: We will continue the study of local government in chapter 12.  Students will learn about local leaders in lesson 2.  

Math:  We will continue the study of chapter 5 on understanding division.  Students will learn about the concept of division.  We will discuss vocabulary words such as partition, division sentence, dividend, divisor, and quotient.  

Spelling: 
Monday:  Pretest on lesson 12
Homework - Cursive worksheet
Tuesday:  Homework - Write your words fives times each.
Wednesday: Homework - Write sentences using your spelling words.
Friday:  Post test on lesson 12

Reading:  This week students will read Mulan.  They will be given vocabulary words on Monday, November 18th.  There will be a vocabulary quiz and comprehension check on Thursday, November 21st.  

English: This week students will write a persuasive paper from a turkey's point of view.  They will have to convince a farmer to let them escape!

November 11th to November 15th 


There will be no school on Friday, November 10th or on Monday, November 11th.  Monday is Veterans Day.  Please plan accordingly.

The Twelfth Week of 2013 at School:

Science: We will continue to study matter in chapter 11.  This week we will finish the study of lesson 1 and move on to lesson 2.  

Social Studies: We will learn about community services in chapter 12.  We will discuss how this relates to Downers Grove.  

Math:  There will be a chapter 4 test on Wednesday, November 13th.  Students should use their book and study guide to prepare.  Then we will begin chapter 5 on understanding division.  

Spelling: 
Tuesday:  Pretest on lesson 11
Homework - Cursive worksheet
Wednesday:  Homework - Write your words fives times each.
Thursday: Homework - Write sentences using your spelling words.
Friday:  Post test on lesson 11

Reading:  Students will read about characters who have broken through gender barriers.  Students will continue working on finding text proof.  We will also continue our Daily 5 program.  

English: This week we will finish the study of nouns in unit 2.  Students will receive a study guide on Tuesday, November 12th.  There will be a noun test on Friday, November 15th.  Also, at the end of the week students will bring home a turkey that they need to disguise.  They will be writing about it in the following week.

November 4th to November 8th




We had a boo-tiful time at our Halloween Party and Halloween Parade. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make it possible. 

We will not have school on Friday, November 8th or Monday November 11th.  Please plan accordingly.  

Conferences:  I look forward to meeting with each of you on Monday, November 4th and Tuesday, November 5th for conferences!  

We will be taking a field trip to Downers Grove as part of our Social Studies unit about our city on Thursday, November 7th from 9 am to 2 pm. Everyone will eat at Giordano's restaurant (please send a cold lunch if your child decides not sign up for a pizza lunch). If you would like, though it is not necessary, students can also bring $5-$8 in cash on the day of the field trip. Your student can spend this money at any of the downtown Downers Grove shops. Each student will be responsible for their own money. Thank you!

The Eleventh Week of 2013 at School:

Science: We will continue the study of matter in chapter 11.  

Social Studies: We will continue learning about modern day Downers Grove.  Then we will learn about communities in chapter 12 in the social studies textbooks.  

Math: Students will continue to learn about the concept of multiplication.  They will work on problem solving and using multiplication to find combinations.  

Spelling: There will not be spelling this week.

Reading: This week we will be exploring synonyms and antonyms.  We will also continue to read nonfiction text and find text proof to answer questions about the text.   

English:  We will continue the study of nouns in unit 2.  Students will learn about singular and plural nouns.  They will also learn how to make nouns possessive.

October 28th to November 1st


 

Halloween:  The Halloween parade will be at at 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, October 31st.  Then we will have our classroom party at 1:30 p.m.
Please keep in mind the following guidelines when helping your child pick out a Halloween costume:

1. We only have 15 minutes for costume changes. Please make sure your child can change into his/her costume easily and by themselves. If the costume can be worn over their clothes, then both the time to change and the chances of losing any clothes is minimized.

2. If the costume involves make up, please apply it before your child comes to school. If you send your child in with make up, then your child has to be able to apply it themselves. 

3. Please do not send any weapons (guns, swords, etc.) as part of the costume. Save those for trick-or-treating.

4. We will not have time to change back into our clothes for dismissal. Your child will wear their costume home.

Social Studies: There we will be a history of Downers Grove quiz on Monday, October 28th.  Then we will begin the study of modern day Downers Grove.  

Math:  This week we will begin the study of chapter 4 on understanding multiplication.  Students will be able to explain the concept of multiplication.  Students will also study and make arrays.  They will learn how arrays relate to multiplication.  

Spelling: 
Monday:  Pretest on lesson 10
Homework - Cursive worksheet
Tuesday:  Homework - Write your words fives times each.
Wednesday: Homework - Write sentences using your spelling words.
Thursday:  Post test on lesson 10.  We will take the test on Thursday, so students do not have to study the night of Halloween!


Reading: This week students will read nonfiction articles and find text dependent answers.  We will also continue our Daily 5 program.  The October Reading Log is due on Friday, November 1st.  

English:  The final draft of the persuasive haunted house paragraph will be due on Monday, October 28th.  Then we will begin the study of nouns in Unit 2.

Monday 10/28:  There will be a history of Downers Grove quiz.  

Tuesday 10/29:  There will be a chapter 9 science test.  
Thursday 10/31: We will have a spelling test. Happy Halloween!  We will have our parade and party!

October 21st - October 25th 

Thursday, October 24th is an early dismissal day.  Students will be dismissed at 11:00 a.m.  Please plan accordingly.  

We will be taking a field trip to Downers Grove as part of our Social Studies unit about our city on Thursday, November 7th from 9 am to 2 pm.  If you would be interested in chaperoning, please email me.  Everyone will eat at Giordano's restaurant (please send a cold lunch if your child decides not sign up for a pizza lunch). The Ninth Week of 2013 at School:

Science: This week we will continue the study of weather in chapter 9, lesson 3.  Look for a study guide to come home.  There will be a test in the week of October 28th. 

Social Studies: This week we will continue studying the history of Downers Grove.  Students will learn about the Underground Railroad.  Look for a study guide to come home this week.  There will be a Downers Grove history quiz on Monday, October 28th.  

Spelling: 
Monday:  Pretest on lesson 9
Homework - Cursive worksheet
Tuesday:  Homework - Write your words three times each.
Wednesday: Homework - Write sentences using your spelling words.
Friday:  Post test on lesson 9

Reading: We will practice the strategy inferring while reading various texts.  We will also continue our Daily 5 program.  

English:  We will continue our persuasive, descriptive writing unit.  Students will write a paper persuading the class to buy their haunted house! 

Math: This week we will finish the study of chapter 3 on subtraction.  A study guide will be passed out on Monday, October 21st.  There will be a chapter 3 test on Friday, October 25th.

Thursday 10/24:  It is an early dismissal day.
Friday 10/25:  There will be a spelling test and a chapter 3 math test.
Monday 10/28:  There will be a Downers Grove history quiz.
