September 28th - October 2nd

Thank you so much for sending in apples for Johnny Appleseed's birthday!  Also, thank you to the parents who sent in extra supplies!  Below are pictures of the class wearing their apple glasses.  





  









The Sixth Week of 2015 at School:
Science: This week we will begin the study of the water cycle and weather in chapter 9.

Social Studies:   There will be a hemisphere quiz on Tuesday, September 29th.  Then we will focus on science.  

Math: 
We will finish our study of unit 1 which focuses on multiplication and division.  There will be a unit 1 test on Wednesday, September 30th.  Students should have their study guide (practice test) completed by Tuesday, September 29th.  Next, we will study measurement.  Students will take a multiplication by 4 test on Tuesday, September 29th They will have two and a half minutes to complete 26 problems.   Students who pass on Tuesday, September 29th will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.  

Spelling: We will continue our Words Their Way program.  Students will be given a new word sort.  Students should complete 8 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, October 9th.  Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.   Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, October 9th.  
            
English Language Arts:  This week we will continue our first unit of study, Tales as Old as Time.  We will focus on fairy-tales.  First, we will read Cinderella along with the fractured fairy-tales Prince Cinders and Princess and the Frog.  Students will then write their own fractured fairy-tale based on Cinderella.  Next, we will study point of view while reading Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent.  Each student will write Cinderella from another character's point of view such as the stepmom.   We will also continue our Daily 5 program.  Students' independent reading contracts, which they have been working on in the read to self station and also have been able to work on at home, will be due on Thursday, October 1st.  Students' September reading log will also be due on Thursday, October 1st.  

Things to Remember:
Tuesday 9/29: There will a hemisphere quiz and a multiplication by 4 test.
Wednesday 9/30: There will be a unit 1 math test.  
Thursday 10/1:  September reading logs and independent reading contracts are due. 


Friday 10/9: There will be a spelling test and each student's 8 activities are due.

September 21st- September 25th

Saturday, September 26th is Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. We will be having a celebration! Please send a peeled, cored, and sliced apple with your child on Friday, September 25th to be used to make applesauce for the class.   Thank you to the parents who donated bowls, spoons, and juice boxes!  

Thursday, September 24th will be an early dismissal day.  Students will leave school at 11:35 a.m.  Please plan accordingly.

The Fifth Week of 2015 at School:

Science: This week we will focus on social studies.

Social Studies: Students will present their continent slides.  Then we will begin the study of hemispheres.  Look for a study guide to come home.  There will be a hemisphere quiz on Tuesday, September 29th.  


Math: 
We will continue our study of unit 1 which focuses on multiplication and division.  This week students will make multiplication comparisons. Students will take a multiplication by 3 test on Tuesday, September 22nd They will have two and a half minutes to complete 26 problems.   Students who pass on Tuesday, September 22nd will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.

English Language Arts:  This week we will continue our first unit of study, Tales as Old as Time.  This unit of study includes folktales, fairy tales, myths, legends, tall tales, and fables.  Students will compare and contrast Mulan and The Mysterious Giant of Barletta.  We will also continue our Daily 5 program.  In addition, students will learn about the writing process.  We will be discussing the following steps: think it up, write it up, doctor it up, fix it up, and put it up.  Students will start applying these steps to their own writing.  


Things to Remember:
Tuesday 9/22:  There will be a multiplication by 3 test. 

Thursday 9/24: It is an early dismissal day.  Students will leave at 11:35 a.m.
Friday 9/25: There will be a spelling test.  It's Johnny Appleseed's birthday celebration!

September 14th - September 18th

Saturday, September 26th is Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. We will be having a celebration! Please send a peeled, cored, and sliced apple with your child on Friday, September 25th to be used to make applesauce for the class. We are looking for donations of small bowls, plastic spoons, and apple juice. If this is something you are interested in helping with, please email me or send the items in any day before Friday, September 25th. Thank you in advance for your help!

Social Studies: We will continue learning about the continents and oceans.  Students will research facts about different continents.  There will be a continent and ocean test on Friday, September 18th.  Look for a study guide to come home on Monday, September 14th.  

Math: 
We will continue our study of Module 1 which focuses on multiplication and division.  Students will begin to take timed multiplication tests.  We will begin with multiplication by 2.  They will have two and a half minutes to complete 26 problems.  The first test will be on Tuesday, September 15th.  Students who pass on Tuesday, September 15th will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.

English Language Arts:  This week we will continue our first unit of study, Tales as Old as Time.  This unit of study includes folktales, fairy tales, myths, legends, tall tales, and fables.  This week I will model identifying character traits in the story The Mysterious Giant of Barletta.  When finding character traits, students need to find evidence to support the chosen character trait.  Students will apply this strategy to their good fit books.  The class will also be studying simple versus compound sentences.   

Things to Remember:

Tuesday 9/15:  There will be a multiplication by 2 test.  
Friday 9/18: There will be a continent and ocean test.  

Friday 9/25: It's Johnny Appleseed's birthday celebration!  Students will have a spelling test and their homework is due.

September 7th- September 11th

This week students will take the reading and math MAP tests on Wednesday, September 9th and Thursday, September 10th, respectively. 

The Third Week of School:
Science:  This week we will focus on social studies.

Social Studies:  On Tuesday, students will get a chance to go on a direction scavenger hunt around the building to find a prize!  Then we will begin our study of continents and oceans.     

Math: My math class will be following a fourth grade curriculum using our new math program, Bridges.  Although we will be following the fourth grade curriculum, we will be interweaving third grade concepts as needed.  This information will be determined by pretests.  There will also be some enrichment with the introduction of fifth grade concepts.  

We will continue our study of Module 1 which focuses on multiplication and division.  Students will begin to take timed multiplication tests.  We will begin with multiplication by 2.  They will have two and a half minutes to complete 26 problems.  The first test will be on Tuesday, September 15th.  Students who pass on Tuesday, September 15th will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.  

English Language Arts:  This week we will begin our first unit of study, Tales as Old as Time.  This unit of study includes folktales, fairy tales, myths, legends, tall tales, and fables.  I will be using the story Mulan to model different reading strategies and then students will read good fit books.  We will begin the Daily 5.  

Things to Remember:
Monday 9/7: Today is Labor Day, so there is no school.  
Wednesday 9/9:  Students will take the reading MAP test.  
Thursday 9/10: Students will take the math MAP test.  

Tuesday 9/15:  There will be a multiplication by 2 test.
