January 4th to January 9th


I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday! School will resume on Tuesday, January 3rd







We had a fun filled week leading up to winter break. The class had a great time bowling at Brunswick Zone and enjoyed the play, "A Christmas Carol." 

The Eighteenth Week at School:
Science: We will begin the study of matter in chapter 11.  We will focus on chapter 11, lesson 1 titled, "What is Matter?" Students will learn about the physical properties of matter and different ways to measure matter.

Social Studies: We will focus on science.

Math:    On the Friday before break, students learned about binary coding. Ask your child what they learned! When we return from break, students will begin unit 4, module 1 on place value and the standard addition algorithm. Students will review rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand. They will also begin division timed tests.  They will start with a divide by 2 timed test on Thursday, January 5th.  These tests will be very similar to the multiplication tests.  Students will have two minutes to complete 26 problems. Students who pass on Thursday, January 5th will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.  

Spelling:  Students will receive a new spelling list and should complete three activities using the new spelling menu.  The test will be on Friday, January 13th.  The activities will also be due on Friday, January 13th.  

ELA: We will continue our unit on traditions.  This week students will read The Keeping Quilt and discuss the traditions in the story.  They will also be reading good fit books in their literature circles.  December Reading Logs will be due on Tuesday, January 3rd.  A January reading log was sent home on Friday.  In addition, students will also write about their New Year's resolution.  


Things to Remember:
Tuesday 1/3:  December Reading Logs are due.
Tuesday 1/5: There will be a divide by 2 test.  

Friday 1/13:  There will be a spelling test and 3 activities are due.

 December 12th- December 16th

The class is looking forward to attending "A Christmas Carol" on Tuesday, December 13th

They are also excited to go bowling on Wednesday, December 14th. Optional: Students can bring up to $10.00 if they would like to buy a snack at the bowling alley.  If your child chooses to buy a large snack, chances are they will not be very hungry at lunch.  Therefore, it is probably a good idea to pack a light lunch. 

 The Seventeenth Week of 2016 at School:

Science: We will focus on social studies this week.  

Social Studies: This week students will reading about community in their social studies book. They will study local government and the roles of leaders in a community. 


Math:  
We finished the study of unit 3.  Students' study guides are due on Monday, December  12th. The unit 3 test will also be on Monday, December 12th as well. Then we will start the study of unit 4, module 1 on place value. Students took  a mixed multiplication test. If they did not pass on today, Friday, December 9th, they will retake the test on Monday, December 12th. There will be 40 problems with facts ranging from x0 to x9. Students will have 3 minutes to complete the test. 

Spelling: Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, December 16th.  Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.   Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, December 16th. 


ELA: We'll continue our unit on Culture and Traditions. This week we will work on the reading strategy, inferring. We will also continue Literature Circles with good fit books.

 December 5th- December 9th


We had a wonderful time on our Downers Grove field trip! Thank you to the parent chaperones for all of your help! In the top picture, students are standing in front of Pierce Downer's home. Below, the students are pictured in front of Charles Blodgett's home, son of Israel Blodgett.  

There are a couple permission slips coming home today: bowling and Drury Lane. Please sign them and send them back to school as soon as you can.

Social Studies: We will finish the study of modern day Downers Grove. Look for a study guide to go home on Monday. The modern day Downers Grove quiz will be on Friday, December 9th

We will finish the study of unit 3.  Students received will receive their study guide on Monday, December  5th.  The study guide will be due on Monday, December 12th. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! We will not have school on Wednesday, November 23rdThursday, November 24th, and Friday, November 25th.

Downers Grove Field Trip:  We will be taking a field trip to Downers Grove as part of our Social Studies unit about our city on Tuesday, November 29th We will go on a tour of Downers Grove and stop at various places such Pierce Downer's house, which is pictured above.  Then we will go to the Downers Grove museum.  Next, everyone will eat at Giordano's restaurant (please send a cold lunch if your child decides not sign up for a pizza lunch).

November 14th- November 22nd



Happy Veterans Day! Today we had a wonderful assembly where students and staff had the chance to honor our veterans! I want to thank Cody's grandpa and family friend, Ryan's grandpa, and Harris' dad for serving our country and being a part of our assembly! Also, thank you to Mrs. Dobson for organizing Webelos Den 8 to serve as our Color Guard.

Downers Grove Field Trip:  We will be taking a field trip to Downers Grove as part of our Social Studies unit about our city on Tuesday, November 29th We will go on a tour of Downers Grove and stop at various places such Pierce Downer's house.  Then we will go to the Downers Grove museum.  Next, everyone will eat at Giordano's restaurant (please send a cold lunch if your child decides not sign up for a pizza lunch).  Please send the permission slip to school with your child on Friday (11/18), if you have not already done so.  Thank you!

The end of the first trimester will be on Friday, November 18th.  


We will not have school on Wednesday, November 23rd, Thursday, November 24th, and Friday, November 25th due to Thanksgiving! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

The Thirteenth Week of 2016 at School:

Science: We will focus on social studies this week.  

Social Studies: We will finish the studying the history of Downers Grove.  There will be a Downers Grove history quiz on Tuesday, November 22nd.  Students will receive a study guide on Tuesday, November 15th.


Math:  
We will finish unit 3, module 1 on equivalent fractions.  Then we will begin unit 3, module 2 on comparing, composing, and decomposing fractions and mixed numbers.  Students will also take a multiplication by 11 test on Wednesday, November 16th

Spelling: Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, December 2nd, which is the Friday after Thanksgiving break.  Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.   Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, December 2nd. 


ELA:  We will work on the reading strategy of cause and effect. In addition, we will study main idea and detail. 

Next week, we will also be working on a writing project pertaining to Thanksgiving.  Today you will see a bare turkey coming home.  Students need to "disguise" him so the farmer lets him go!  Students should bring back their disguised turkeys on Wednesday, November 16th.  It is not necessary to buy any crafty items, just use what you have at home.  I've seen feathers, beads, googly eyes, cloth, construction paper, and just plain old crayons used.  We will complete the writing portion of this project in class.

Things to Remember:
Wednesday 11/16:  Turkey disguises are due.  There will be a multiplication by 11 test.


Tuesday 11/22: There will be a Downers Grove history quiz.  

Wednesday 11/23: No School
Thursday 11/24: Happy Thanksgiving!

November 9th to November 11th




We had a boo-tiful time at our Halloween Party and Halloween Parade. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make it possible. The class had so much fun!  

I really enjoyed meeting with each of you for conferences.  It was so nice to sit down and talk with you about your child.  If you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.  


There will not be school on Monday, November 7th and Tuesday, November 8th.  Please plan accordingly.

Thank you to Mr. Dalton for putting on an incredible Magic Show for our third grade students today! The students and teachers could not believe their eyes! Everyone was AMAZED!

The Twelfth Week of 2016 at School:

Social Studies: We continue studying the history of Downers Grove. Students will learn the part citizens of Downers Grove played in the Underground Railroad. 

Science: We will focus on social studies.

Spelling:  Students already have a spelling list.  Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, November 11th.  Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.   Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, November 11th.  

ELA: This week students students will work on reading skills. We will focus on cause and effect. Next, we will focus on main idea and detail. We will also continue our Daily 5 Program. 


Math: We will continue the study of Unit 3 on fractions and decimals. This week we will study mixed numbers and equivalent fractions. Students will take a multiplication by 10 test on Wednesday, November 9th

October 31st - November 4th

Halloween:
1. Our party will take place on Monday, October 31st. The room party will go from 1:10-2:10 p.m. Our Prairieview parade will begin at 2:10 p.m.

2. We only have 15 minutes for costume changes. Please make sure your child can change into his/her costume easily and by themselves. If the costume can be worn over their clothes, then both the time to change and the chances of losing any clothes is minimized.

3. If the costume involves make up, please apply it before your child comes to school. If you send your child in with make up, then your child has to be able to apply it themselves. 

4. Please do not send any weapons (guns, swords, etc.) as part of the costume. Save those for trick-or-treating.

5. We will not have time to change back into our clothes for dismissal. Your child will wear their costume home.

ELA: This week students will work on finding text evidence in order to answer questions from a passage. This will help students write reading responses. Students will also work on reading fluency.


The October reading log is due on Tuesday, November 1st.

Math: We will finish the study of unit 2 on multi-digit multiplication and early division. The unit 2 test will be on Wednesday, November 2nd. The study guide will also be due on Wednesday, November 2nd. They will take a multiplication by 9 test on Thursday, November 3rd

The Tenth Week of 2016 at School:
Social Studies: We will begin studying the history of Downers Grove. 

Science: We have finished the study of the water cycle in chapter 9. Students have received a study guide. The chapter 9 test will be on Tuesday, October 25th.



Spelling:  Students were given a list of words along with a homework sheet with a list of activities.    Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, October 28th.  Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.   Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, October 28th.  

ELA: This week students will work on finding text evidence in order to answer questions from a passage. For English, we are going to continue to work on descriptive writing with a persuasive flare. The students will try to convince a movie director to buy their haunted house!


Math: We will continue the study of unit 2, module 3 on multiplication stories and strategies.  Then we will work on unit 2, module 4 on early division and remainders. They will take a multiplication by 8 test on Wednesday, October 26th Students will have two and a half minutes to complete 26 problems.   Students who pass on Wednesday, October 26th will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.

Tuesday 10/25: There will be a chapter 9 science test.
Wednesday 10/26: There will be a multiplication by 8 test. It is an early dismissal day.

October 17th - October 21st

The Ninth Week of 2016 at School:

Science: We will study weather in chapter 9, lesson 3.  Look for a study guide to come home this week.  There will be a test in the week of October 24th.  

The students watched the water cycle in progress during a class experiment.  First, the water evaporated when it was boiled.  Ice cubes were placed in the pie pan in order to cool down the air.  This caused the water vapor  to condense on the bottom of the pie pan. As the condensed water started to build up, it fell like precipitation.  














  

Spelling:  We will continue our Ways Their Way program.  Students will be given their list of words along with a homework sheet with a list of activities.    Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, October 28th.  Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.   Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, October 28th.  

ELA: Students should finish writing their fractured fairytales of Cinderella by Monday, October 17th. They should use the fairytale requirements sheet to help them. The story is 5 paragraphs long. Furthermore, we will be continuing myths and reading stories about the Greek Gods.

Math: We will continue the study of unit 2, module 2 on arrays and ratio tables.  Students will use base ten blocks, the distributive property, and ratio tables to solve multiplication problems.   They will take a multiplication by 7 test on Wednesday, October 19th Students will have two and a half minutes to complete 26 problems.   Students who pass on Wednesday, October 19th will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.

Monday 10/17: Fractured fairytales are due.
Wednesday 10/19: There will be a multiplication by 7 test.

October 10th - October 14th

Remember Monday, October 10th is Columbus Day and there will be no school.  Please plan accordingly.

Halloween: 
The Halloween parade and party will be on October 31st.  

Please keep in mind the following guidelines when helping your child pick out a Halloween costume:


1. We only have 15 minutes for costume changes. Please make sure your child can change into his/her costume easily and by themselves. If the costume can be worn over their clothes, then both the time to change and the chances of losing any clothes is minimized.

2. If the costume involves make up, please apply it before your child comes to school. If you send your child in with make up, then your child has to be able to apply it themselves. 

3. Please do not send any weapons (guns, swords, etc.) as part of the costume. Save those for trick-or-treating. Also, costumes should not include fake blood.

4. We will not have time to change back into our clothes for dismissal. Your child will wear their costume home.

On Thursday, October 13th there will be a book fair and taffy apple sale from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

A message from Mrs. Cushing, our P.E. teacher:
If your child would like to be part of the Prairieview P.E. Bulletin board, please take an "action" picture of your child showing some type of PHYSICAL ACTIVITY that they are involved in outside of school. Please get these in as soon as possible. We are halfway through the 1st trimester of third grade! Time sure flies! Feel free to check your child's grades online. If you are having problems doing so, please call the office.

We will continue building multiplication arrays and ratio tables.  Students will also take a multiplication by 6 test on Wednesday, October 12th They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.   Students who pass on Wednesday, October 12th will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.
