May 2nd to May 6th

My reading class has really enjoyed studying magic and learning about the great magicians!

My homeroom will have MAP testing on Monday, May 2nd.  Please make sure students get a good night sleep and eat breakfast!

The Sixteenth Week of 2011 at School:
Science: We will continue the study of energy in chapter 12.  We will study lesson 3 this week and discuss the importance of energy. 

Social Studies: Students will continue to learn about economy in chapter 9.  We will finish our study of lesson 2 on making good choices.  We then will begin the study of lesson three on community businesses.  Students will review the difference between goods and services.  They will learn about supply and demand. 

Spelling: There will be no spelling or reading class on Monday, May 2nd due to MAP testing.  Students will take pretest 23 on Tuesday, May 3rd.  Students will take the post-test on Friday, May 6th.


Reading: We will continue the study of magic!  Last week we read about the great magician, Harry Houdini! This week we will continue to study the story of Harry Houdini while reviewing the reading strategies we have learned throughout the year.  Students will learn a magic trick for our class magic show on May 10th from 8:20-9:20.  If you would like to join us for the magic show, please email me at mpellin@ccsd66.org.

English: We will finish the study of pronouns in unit 6.   The test has been pushed back to Thursday, May 6th.  Students will receive a study guide on Monday, May 2nd.  There will also be a D.O.L. (Daily Oral Language) Quiz on book titles and transition words on Friday, May 6th.

Math: There will be a chapter 17 test on Wednesday, May 4th.  Then we will begin the study of chapter 24 on dividing larger numbers.  We will have a division by 7 on Friday, May 6th. 




Things to Remember:
Monday 5/3:  There will be MAP testing.

Wednesday 5/4:  There will be a math test.
Thursday 5/5:  There will be an English test.
Friday 5/6: There will be a spelling test.  There will be a division test.  There will also be a D.O.L. Quiz.

April 25th to April 29th


 



On Friday, April 22nd there will not be school.  Please plan accordingly.

Arbor Day is Friday, April 29thArbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care.  A wonderful way to celebrate would be to plant a tree!

We are working on a special project in homeroom.  It would be great if you could send in $1.00 with your child by Friday, April 29th to fund the project.


The Fifteenth Week of 2011 at School:
Science: We will continue the study of energy in chapter 12.  We will learn how energy can be used.  We will take an open book chapter 12 lesson 2 review on Thursday, April 28th.

Social Studies: Now that we've finished up our Chicago unit, we are going to start economy. This is in chapter 9 of our social studies books. The first graded assignment is on Wednesday, April 27th which is a lesson 1 open book review.

Spelling: Unit 22 covers words ending in -er and -le. Homework will be due and there will be a test on Friday, April 29th. 


Reading: This week, we will begin our magic unit! Be on the lookout for an invitation coming home for our magic show on Tuesday, May 10th from 8:20 - 9:20.

English: We will continue the study of pronouns in unit 6.  There will be a test on Tuesday, May 3rd.  Students will also finish their pen pal letters to a second grade student at Elizabeth Ide.

Math: There will be a chapter 23 test on Tuesday, April 26th.  We will then begin the study of chapter 17 on alegebra.  We will have a division by 6 on Friday, April 29th.

Tuesday 4/26:
There will be a math test. 
Friday 4/29: There will be a division test.  There will be a spelling test.

Tuesday 5/3:  There will be an English test.

I enjoyed seeing everyone at Open House!


Thursday, April 21st will be an early dismissal day.  On Friday, April 22nd there will not be school.  Please plan accordingly.

The Fourteenth Week of 2010 at School:
Science: We will continue the study of energy in chapter 12.

Social Studies: There will be a history of Chicago quiz on Monday, April 18th.  We will finish our study of Chicago this week.

Spelling: There will not be a spelling test due to the shortened week.  


Reading: This week we will continue the study of poetry.  Students will be studying and writing different types of poems such as limericks.

English: We will continue the study of pronouns in unit 6. 

Math: We will continue studying multiplication of large numbers.  There will be a chapter 23 test on Tuesday, April 26th.  Look for a study guide to come home this week.  We will have a division by 5 test on Thursday, April 21st. 




Things to Remember:
Monday 4/18: There will be a Chicago quiz today.
Thursday 4/21:
There will be a division test.  Students will be dismissed at 11:05 today.
Friday 4/22: There will not be school today.

April 11th to April 15th

Please join us for our spring open house on Thursday, April 14th - I look forward to seeing each of you! Thursday, April 21st will be an early dismissal day.  There will be no school on Friday, April 22nd.  Please plan accordingly.

The Thirteenth Week of 2011 at School:

Science: We study energy in chapter 12.  Students will learn about kinetic and potential energy.

Social Studies: We will continue the study of Chicago.  There will be a Chicago quiz on Thursday, April 14th.  Students will receive a study guide on Monday,  April 11th.  The landmark mobiles are due on Monday April 11th.

Spelling: The focus on lesson 21 is the VCCV (vowel, consonant, consonant, vowel) pattern. All homework is due on Thursday, April 14th. The test will still be on Friday.


Reading: We are going to begin our unit on poetry this week focusing on stanza, rhythm and rhyme. There will be a poetry vocabulary quiz on Thursday, April 14th.

English: We will begin the study of pronouns.  

Math:  We will finish our study of fractions and decimals in chapter 18 and 19.  There will be a test on Wednesday, April 13th.  Then we will begin the study of chapter 23 on multiplying large numbers.

There will be a test on division by 4's on Friday, April 15th. Students will receive two minutes to complete 26 division by 4 questions. Practice sheets will be coming home throughout the week.






Things to Remember:
Monday 4/11: The Chicago mobiles are due.

Wednesday 4/13:  There will be a chapter 18 and 19 math test. 
Thursday 4/14: This is our spring open house! There will be a poetry and Chicago quiz.
Friday 4/15: There will be a Spelling and a division test.
