Mrs. Burland's Bulletin
November 20th- December 1st

We will not have school on Wednesday, November 22ndThursday, November 23rd, and Friday, November 24th due to Thanksgiving! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

The end of the first trimester is today, November 17th. Grades will be completed by early next week and an email will be sent out when grades are finalized. 

The Upcoming Week at School:

Social Science: We have completed all four mysteries in our Mystery Science unit 1 titled, The Power of Flowers. There will be a test on Tuesday, November 21st. There is not a study guide for this test. Students should look over the short assessment pages on the four mysteries, along with their activity pages. They should also study the vocabulary page we completed as a class. Vocabulary is a large portion of the test. The students have been captivated by the videos and activities and if they have been listening, they will do great! I will give students time to study the vocabulary on Monday and we will play a review game. When we return from Thanksgiving Break, we will begin a new Mystery Science unit on weather!


Math:  We will finish the study of unit 3, module 2 on comparing, composing, and decomposing fractions and mixed numbers. Students will take a mixed multiplication test on Wednesday, November 29thThere will be 40 problems with facts ranging from x0 to x9. Students will have 3 minutes to complete the test. Each problem will be worth a half point, totaling 20 points. There will not be retakes. They have received two practice tests.

Spelling: Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Tuesday, November 21st, which is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break.  Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.  Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Tuesday, November 21st. Students will receive a new spelling list on Monday, November 27th. 


ELA:  We will finish the study of myths while looking at the plot elements: exposition, conflict, rising actions, climax, falling actions, and resolution. We will also finish the study nouns and begin studying adjectives.  Students will write a persuasive letter to a farmer on why they should let their turkey go!


Students should continue reading 20 min. each night and fill out their November reading logs.

Things to Remember:
Tuesday 11/21: The 3 spelling activities are due and there will be a spelling test. There will also be a science test.

Wednesday 11/22: No School
Thursday 11/23: Happy Thanksgiving!
Friday 11/24: No School

Wednesday 11/29: There will be a mixed multiplication test.

Happy Veterans Day! Today we had a wonderful assembly where students and staff had the chance to honor our veterans! I want to thank Brady's grandpa, Madison's grandpa, and Joseph's uncle for serving our country and being a part of our assembly!

The Upcoming Week at School:

Social Science: The students have been loving Mystery Science unit 1 titled, The Power of Flowers. We have completed Mystery 1 on Flowering and Reproduction (Why do plants grow flowers?) and Mystery 2 on reproduction (Why do plants give us fruit?). For each mystery students complete an activity. In the pictures below students are studying fruits and vegetables and are deciding whether each item is a scientific fruit or a scientific vegetable. Many students were surprised to find out that eggplant is a scientific fruit. 




Math:  
We will finish unit 3, module 1 on mixed numbers and equivalent fractions.  Then we will begin unit 3, module 2 on comparing, composing, and decomposing fractions and mixed numbers. Students will complete a checkpoint on equivalent fractions. Students will also take a multiplication by 12 test on Wednesday, November 15th

Spelling: Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Tuesday, November 21st, which is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break.  Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.  Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Tuesday, November 21st.

Next week, we will also be working on a writing project pertaining to Thanksgiving.  Today you will see a bare turkey coming home.  Students need to "disguise" him so the farmer lets him go!  Students should bring back their disguised turkeys on Wednesday, November 15th.  It is not necessary to buy any crafty items, just use what you have at home.  I've seen feathers, beads, googly eyes, cloth, construction paper, and just plain old crayons used.  We will complete the writing portion of this project in class.

Things to Remember:
Wednesday 11/15:  Turkey disguises are due.  There will be a multiplication by 12 test.


Tuesday 11/21: 
The 3 spelling activities are due and there will be a spelling test. 
Wednesday 11/22: No School
Thursday 11/23: Happy Thanksgiving!

We had a boo-tiful time at our Halloween Party and Halloween Parade. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make it possible including our Party Planners/Room Moms, Mrs. Ciocan and Mrs. Bowers. The class had so much fun!  We also had a wonderful time on our Downers Grove field trip! I appreciate all of the chaperones help as well!        


The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science: We have completed our Downers Grove unit and will start Science! We are going to be using a wonderful program titled, Mystery Science this year, which addresses all of the common core science standards. We will complete lesson 1 on flower pollination! 

Spelling:  Students have already been given their list of words along with a homework sheet with a list of activities. Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, November 10th.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, November 10th

ELA: This week we will be starting the study of Myths. We will read about the 12 gods of Olympus and King Midas. We will study cause and effect as well as story mapping. Furthermore, adjectives and nouns will be explored further. 

Have you seen your child's November reading log? They should have it and already started reading!

Math: Students will take the Unit 2 test on Monday, November 6th. We will then begin the study of Unit 3 on fractions and decimals. This week we will study mixed numbers and equivalent fractions. Students will take a multiplication by 10 test and a multiplication by 11 test on Wednesday, November 8th 

Things to Remember:
Monday 11/6: There will be a unit 2 math test. 
Wednesday 11/8: There will be a multiplication by 10 and 11 test.
Friday 11/10: It is Veterans Day! Students will take a spelling test and their 3 activities are due.
