Above are some pictures from our bowling trip on Monday!

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday! School will resume on Monday, January 7th.  

There will be MAPs testing on January 8th and 9th.  Please talk to your child about trying their best!  Also make sure they eat a good breakfast and get plenty of sleep.  Thank you!

Matter Presentation:  We are fortunate to invite scientists from "High Touch-High Tech to Prairieview.  They will lead students through many experiments involving the different states of matter on Monday, January 14th.  Please send in $7.50 for this presentation by Thursday, January 10th.


The Eighteenth Week at School:
Science: We will continue the study of matter.  Students will learn about the different states of matter.

Social Studies: We will focus on science this week.

Math:  We will continue the study of measurement (Chapter 20). There will be  a study guide coming home this week.  There will be a chapter 20 test in the week of January 14th.  We have covered all of the multiplication facts from x2 to x9, but there may be a few your child needs to review and memorize.  Students will be tested on all these facts on Wednesday, January 16th.  Students will need to complete 50 questions in 3 minutes.

Monday:  Pretest on lesson 13
Homework - Cursive worksheet
Tuesday:  Homework - Non challenge ABC order
Challenge - Activity 1 
Wednesday: Homework - Non challenge - Write each word in a sentence.

Reading: We will start working on the strategy of monitoring and clarifying as we read using the story Nights of the Pufflings.  We will also be distinguishing fact and opinion. Students will be given vocabulary words on Monday, January 7th.  There will be a vocabulary test on Friday, January 11th.  

English: Students will begin the week by writing down their New Year's resolution.  Students will then begin writing an autobiography.

Monday 12/24: Winter Break begins - have a great holiday.

December 17th to December 21st

On Wednesday, December 12th we were very fortunate to have the Downers Grove mayor, Martin Tully, come talk to the third graders about local government and his job responsibilities.    

Our class will go on a bowling field trip on Monday, December 17th. You can send your child with $5.00 if they would like to buy a snack at the bowling alley. Please send your child with a sack lunch on this day.

On Friday, December 21st, Prairieview students with watch the movie Polar Express at the Tivoli.

The Seventeenth Week of 2012 at School:
Science: We will continue the study of matter in chapter 11.  We are studying lesson 1 this week and will begin lesson 2 if times allows us to do so.  

Social Studies: We continue the study of modern day Downers Grove.  Students will be tested on modern day Downers Grove on Thursday, December 2oth.  A couple questions on the test will review the history of Downers Grove.  On the study guide we wrote down the information students will need to know about the history of Downers Grove in case they no longer have this packet.  They can use their study guide and modern day packets to study.  


Math: Students will finish the graphing project we have been working on in class.  We will then begin the study of measurement in chapter 20.  This week students will study multiplying by 4. There will be a multiplication quiz on Friday, December 21st.  The multiplication quiz will be on some of the facts students have learned so far and the following new facts:

6 X 7 = 42
6 X 8 = 48
6 X 9 = 54
7 X 8 = 56
7 X 9 = 63
8 X 9 = 72


Spelling:  We will work on a winter list.  The packet is due Thursday and there will not be a test on these words.  

Reading:  Our class elf has been traveling around the world to all different places and he is going to share some of that information with us!  The students will spend next week learning about holidays in other parts of the world, and how they celebrate.  This will be done in a group setting and they will present their country to the class.  

English: We will finish the study of verbs in unit 3.  There will be a test on Friday, December 21st.

December 10th to December 14th


Our class will go on a bowling field trip on Monday, December 17th. You can send your child with money if they would like to buy a snack at the bowling alley. Please send your child with a sack lunch on this day.

On Friday, December 21st, the third grade students with watch the movie Polar Express at the Tivoli.  A permission slip was sent home.  Please send this permission slip back by Friday, December 14th.

The District PTO is hosting a Barnes and Noble fundraising book fair event on Tuesday, December 11th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Bolingbrook Promenade. This is no ordinary book fair! The event will include complimentary hot chocolate and cupcakes with a decorating table for the students. There will be a bookmark creation station complete with volunteers monitoring children so that parents can shop for holiday items and visit the complimentary gift wrapping station to hide the presents!  I hope to see you there!

Students will receive vocabulary words on Monday, December 10th.  There will be a vocabulary test and comprehension check on Thursday, December 13th.   At the end of the week students will complete an activity "Santa Cause" which will allow students to come up with funny situations Santa gets into showing cause and effect.  

English: We will continue the study of verbs in unit 3.

We had a great time on our Downers Grove field trip!!  Thank you to all the parents who chaperoned and joined the class at Girodanos.

Science: We will finish the study of chapter 4 on ecosystems with a focus on lesson 4.  There will be a chapter 4 science test on Monday, December 10th.  Students will be given a study guide on Monday, December 3rd. 

Social Studies: There will be a history of Downers Grove quiz on Monday, December 3rd.  Then we will begin the study of modern day Downers Grove. 

Math: This week we study graphs in chapter 6.  There will be a multiplication quiz on facts students have learned so far and the following new facts:

Happy Thanksgiving!!

We will be taking a field trip to Downers Grove as part of our Social Studies unit about our city on Thursday, November 29th from 9 am to 2 pm. If you would like, though it is not necessary, students can also bring $5-$8 in cash on the day of the field trip. Your student can spend this money at any of the downtown Downers Grove shops. Each student will be responsible for their own money.

Science: We will finish the study of ecosystems in chapter 4.  Look for a study guide to come home.  There will be a test in the week of December 3rd.

Thirteenth Week of 2012 at School:

Science: We will continue the study ecosystems in chapter 4.  This week we will study lesson 3.

Math:  There will be a Time Test on Wednesday, November 28th.  There will be a multiplication test on Friday, November 30th.  I will give students a list of the new facts on Monday, November 19th.  

Students will be given 1 minute to complete 17 questions.  Therefore, some questions will be repeated.  

Students will have two chances to get full credit on a multiplication test.  If they do not pass the first two times, the total amount of points they can receive goes down a point.  Please help make sure students are practicing these facts each night.  

Spelling: There will not be spelling this week.  

Reading:  Students will be exploring analogies with our focus on synonym/antonym analogies. There will be a test on synonym/antonym analogies on Tuesday, November 20th.  In addition we will continue working on using context clues to determine the meaning of an unfamiliar word, predicting, and summarizing.  Students will be reading various books while practicing these strategies.  

English: This week we will finish the study of nouns in unit 2.  The noun test will now be on Tuesday, November 27th.  

Things to Remember:

Tuesday 11/20: There will be a synonym/antonym analogies test.

Tuesday 11/27:  There will be a noun test.  
Wednesday 11/28:  There will be a money test.

November 12th to November 23th 



Monday, November 12th is Veterans Day. There will be no school. There also will not be school on November 21st, November 22nd and November 23rd due to Thanksgiving.  Please plan accordingly.    
Ask your child about their new dictionary!  Rotary Club donated dictionaries to all third grade students at Prairieview!  

We will be taking a field trip to Downers Grove as part of our Social Studies unit about our city on Thursday, November 29th from 9 am to 2 pm.  Students should turn in permission slips if they have not already done so by Friday, November 16th.  I will email chaperons next week.  

The Twelfth and Thirteenth Week of 2012 at School:

Science: We will continue the study ecosystems in chapter 4.  This week we will finish the study of lesson 2 and move on to lesson 3.  

Social Studies: We will continue the study of Downers Grove.  Students will learn about how Pierce Downer's house was part of the underground railroad which lead eventually to Canada. 

Math:  There will be a Money Test on Wednesday, November 8th.  Then we will continue chapter 5 and study time.  There will be a multiplication test on Friday, November 16th on the facts from the previous week and the following new facts:

2 X 3 = 6
2 X 4 = 8
2 X 5 = 10
2 X 6 = 12
2 X 7 = 14
2 X 8 = 16
2 X 9 = 18

November 5th to November 9th


 

We had a boo-tiful time at our Halloween Party and Halloween Parade. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make it possible. 

We will not have school on Monday, November 5th or Tuesday November 6th.  Please plan accordingly.  

We will be taking a field trip to Downers Grove as part of our Social Studies unit about our city on Thursday, November 29th from 9 am to 2 pm. Everyone will eat at Giordano's restaurant (please send a cold lunch if your child decides not sign up for a pizza lunch). If you would like, though it is not necessary, students can also bring $5-$8 in cash on the day of the field trip. Your student can spend this money at any of the downtown Downers Grove shops. Each student will be responsible for their own money. Please send in the permission slip by November 16th.  Thank you!

The Eleventh Week of 2012 at School:

Science: We will continue the study of ecosystems in chapter 4.  We are currently studying different types of ecosystems in lesson 2.  


Social Studies: We will continue learning about the history of Downers Grove.

Math: We will continue the study of money in chapter 5.  Students will be tested on the first half of chapter 5 (money) on Wednesday, November 14th.  They will receive a study guide on Wednesday, November 7th.  Also, we began the study of multiplication.  Typically each Monday I will send home a list of facts I want you to help your child master.  There is limited class time available to practice math facts, so students need to be practicing them each night at home.  Each Friday students will be given 1 minute to complete 17 questions.  The questions will only include the facts students need to master.  Therefore, problems will be repeated.  Below are the facts students will need to know next week:

2 X 2 = 4
3 X 3 = 9
4 X 4 = 16
5 X 5 = 25
6 X 6 = 36
7 X 7 = 49
8 X 8 =64
9 X 9 = 81

They will be tested on these facts on Friday, November 9th.  

Spelling: We will not have spelling this week.

October 29th to November 2nd


 


Halloween:  The Halloween parade will be at at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31st.  Then we will have our classroom party at 1:30 p.m.
Please keep in mind the following guidelines when helping your child pick out a Halloween costume:

1. We only have 15 minutes for costume changes. Please make sure your child can change into his/her costume easily and by themselves. If the costume can be worn over their clothes, then both the time to change and the chances of losing any clothes is minimized.

2. If the costume involves make up, please apply it before your child comes to school. If you send your child in with make up, then your child has to be able to apply it themselves. 

3. Please do not send any weapons (guns, swords, etc.) as part of the costume. Save those for trick-or-treating.

4. We will not have time to change back into our clothes for dismissal. Your child will wear their costume home.

Conferences:  I look forward to meeting with each of you on Monday, October 29th and Tuesday, October 30th for conferences!  

The Tenth Week of 2012 at School:

Science: We will continue the study of chapter 4 on ecosystems.  

Social Studies: We will have a hemisphere test on Tuesday, October 30th.  Then we will begin the study of the history of Downers Grove.  

Math:  This week we will begin the study of chapter 5 on money and time.  Students will be asked to bring in quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.  Five of each coin should be enough.  They will not spend the money.  It will be used for instruction and will be returned when we finish the unit.  

Spelling: This week we will work on Halloween words. There will be a homework packet given to the students on Monday. The homework packet is due Friday. There will be no pretest or final test on the words this week.  They will just need to complete the packet.

Reading: We will practice reading fluently as we engage in choral reading of fun Halloween poems.   We will also continue studying the strategies of cause/effect and predicting.  Students will read chapter books as their level while practicing these strategies.  The will also use context clues and dictionaries for words they do not know.  

English:  The haunted house graphic organizer (rough draft) is due on Monday.  Students should also check that they have included everything on the rubric in their haunted house description.  We will write our final drafts on Monday, October 29th.  Then we will begin the study of nouns in unit 2.

Monday 10/29:  There will be parent/teacher conferences.

Tuesday 10/30:  We will have a hemisphere test.  There will be parent/teacher conferences.
Wednesday 10/31: Happy Halloween!  We will have our parade and party!

October 22nd - October 26th 

Thursday, October 25th is an early dismissal day.  Students will be dismissed at 11:00 a.m.  Please plan accordingly.  

Halloween:

Reading: We will continue practicing the strategies predicting and cause and effect while we read Cliffhanger in our reading series.  Also, a vocabulary log was completed for this story.  Students will have a vocabulary test on Wednesday, October 24th.  There will have a Cliffhanger Comprehension Check on Thursday, October 25th.  

English:  We will continue our persuasive, descriptive writing unit.  Students will write a paper persuading the class to buy their haunted house! 

Math: This week we will finish the study of chapter 4.  Students were given a study guide on Friday, October 19th.  There will be a chapter 4 test on Friday, October 26th.
