Miss Pellin's Post






March 31st – April 4th


Have a wonderful Spring Break! I look forward to hearing all the fun you have had when school begins again on Monday, March 31st! I will tell you about my trip to Honduras.


This week we will have a Cheeseburger in Paradise Party on Thursday, March 20th. We will be ordering McDonalds for lunch and the PTO will be providing a special treat. To celebrate the start of spring break join me and the rest of the third grade in wearing Hawaiian clothes to school on Thursday, April 3rd. Friday, April 4th will be Prairieview spirit wear day.

The Twelfth Week of 2008 at School:


English: We will be starting an expository writing unit. This week students will work with a partner to write an expository paper.


Spelling: We will work on Spelling “List # 24.” On Monday, March 31st there will be a pretest and on Friday, April 4th the will be a final test.

Reading: We will continue to read Stone Fox or Animal Stories. There will be a Stone Fox vocabulary quiz on Chapters 5-7 on Tuesday, April 1st (for real!).


Math: We are starting Chapter 7. Students will be studying bar graphs and will survey the class to make their own bar graphs in a group. The due date for the geometry project is Friday, April 4th.


Science: We will continue to work on our animal reports. Look in your students folder for a habitat assignment. This assignment will be due Thursday, April 17th. We will also continue to study ecosystems focussing on the layers of the rainforest.


Social Studies: We will study Chicago. This will include the histroy fo Chicago including the Chicago Fire. We will read the book Chicago and answer comprehension questions about it.


Things to Remember:
Monday 3/31: There will be a “Spelling List #24” pretest.


Tuesday 4/1: There will be a Stone Fox vocabulary quiz.
Thursday 4/3: Geometry Project is due.
Friday 4/4: There will be a “Spelling List #24” final test. The geometry project is due.


April Spirit Days:

Friday, April 4th -- PV Spirit Day
Friday, April 11th -- Baseball Day
Friday, April 18th -- Rock Band Day -- Wear your favorite rock group, choir or band shirt
Friday, April 25th -- Decade Day -- dress up in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's or 90's apparel

March 17th – March 21st

Last week was spent taking the Illinois Scholastic Achievement Tests (ISATs). To celebrate finishing the tests and the students' hard work, we will have a Cheeseburger in Paradise Party on Thursday, March 20th. We will be ordering McDonalds for lunch and the PTO will be providing a special treat. To celebrate the start of spring break join me and the rest of the third grade in wearing Hawaiian clothes to school on Thursday. This week we will get back to the start of the last trimester of the school year.

The Eleventh Week of 2008 at School:

English: We will finish our study of adjective and adverbs this week. On Monday, March 17th an abverb review worksheet is due. This worksheet should help prepare students for the adverb quiz on Tuesday. On Monday an Unit 4 Review worksheet will be handed out. This will be do on Wednesday, March 19th. The Unit 4 Test will be on Thursday, March 20th.

Spelling: There will not be Spelling in this short week. We will be working on our maps and animal reports during this time.

Reading: We will continue to read Stone Fox or an alternate book. There will be a vocabulary quiz on Chapters 1-4 on Monday, March 17th.

Math: There will be a final mixed multiplication test on Tuesday, March 18th. I have extended the due date for the geometry project to Friday, April 4th. We will have a geometry test (Chapter 10) this Thursday, March 20th.

Science: We will study the terms ecosystem, environment, population, and community. We will also continue to work on our animal reports.

Social Studies: We will continue to work on our maps and then we will begin a unit on Downers Grove.

Friday 3/14: There is no school.
Sunday 3/16: District Fundraiser at Hollywood Blvd. Theatre Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears A Who Noon to 4:00 p.m. (show time 1:30)

Monday 3/17: There will be a Reading Chapter 1-4 Vocabulary Quiz.
Tuesday 3/18: There will be a final mixed multiplication "Mad Minute" test.
Wednesday 3/19: The Unit 4 English Review sheet is due.
Thursday 3/20: There will be a Unit 4 English Test. There will be a Chapter 10 Math Test. We will be having a Cheeseburger in Paradise Party for lunch!!
Friday 3/21: Spring Break begins. There will be no school until Monday, March 31st.

March 10th – March 14th

Report cards for the second trimester will be sent home on Tuesday, March 11. There will be no school for Parent/Teacher conferences on Friday, March 14th. Please make sure that you have completed your conference form and send it back to school with your child.
This is ISAT week! Look in your child's binder for an ISAT packet. This packet can be used for extra practice. It would be great if you could look over/work on this packet with your child! Also, be sure to send your child with healthy snacks this week!

On Friday, March 7th we will wear Prairieview spirit wear.

The Tenth Week of 2008 at School:

English: We will continue to study adverbs this week. We will also work on the Illinois Scholastic Achievement Tests.

Spelling: We will be working on Spelling Test 23! There will be on pretest due to the shortened week. All students will receive the same spelling list. Also, we will be taking the Prefix/Suffix Quiz, which we worked on in place of Spelling last week, on Monday, March 10th.

Reading: We will finishing working on extended responses. We will work on reading comprehension while reading the story Stone Fox. On Tuesday, March 11th and Wednesday, March 12th we will be taking the reading sections of the Illinois Scholastic Achievement Tests.

Math: We will continue multiplication and will review of all multiplication facts that we have learned thus far. Students will be tested on these facts on Tuesday, March 18th. Please help your child practice these multiplication facts throughout the week (this is the hardest test of all). In math we will continue to study geometry. This week we will work on a variety of "T Charts." Also, please check your child's binder for the upcoming geometry project. Please sign the packet and send it back to school with your child. Each part of the rubric should be taken into consideration when completing this project. This project is due on Wednesday, March 19th. We will take the math sections of the Illinois Scholastic Achievement Tests on Tuesday, March 11th, Wednesday, March 12th, and Thursday, March 13th.

Science: Students will complete an animal report. The class will go to the library to research facts on animals for their reports. They will have an opportunity in class to write the reports.


Social Studies: We will continue a second unit on map skills. Students will learn about map coordinates, symbols, and keys while working in groups to create their own maps. Students will make a map of a fictional town.
