Happy Friday! We are having some crazy winter weather! Stay warm this weekend! As we inch toward February, please make sure you are checking your child's grades online frequently. We are halfway through the year already! It is hard to believe!
Thursday, February 1st is an early dismissal day. Please plan accordingly. 

Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science:  This week students will continue the study of chapter 3 on culture and immigration. We will tie this unit into our ELA curriculum as we focus on culture, tradition and where our ancestors and relatives have come from. Look for information about our culture day project coming in a few weeks!



Math: There will be a  unit 4 test on Addition, Subtraction & Measurement on Friday, February 1st. Students have received a unit 4 study guide and it is due on Wednesday, January 30thWe  will have a divide by 5 timed test on Wednesday, January 30th. It is a day earlier in the week due to not having math class on our early dismissal day, Thursday. Then will begin unit 5 on Geometry.

ELA:   We will continue our cross-curricular study of culture and immigration as we read our Communities book. We will also continue our study of nonfiction text structures and strategies. 

The January Reading Log is due on Friday, February 1st. 

Spelling:  Students will receive a new spelling list and should complete three activities using the spelling menu.  The test will be on Friday, February 1st.  The activities will also be due on Friday, February 1st.   

Things to Remember:  
Wednesday 1/30:  There will be a divide by 5 test.  The math unit 4 study guide is due.  
Thursday 1/31:  Students will be dismissed at 11 a.m. 
Friday 2/1:  There will be a spelling test and the three activities are due. The January Reading Log is due today.

January 21st to January 25th
 


Remember that on Monday, January 21st there will not be school due to Martin Luther King's birthday. Please plan accordingly.  

Today marks halfway through Trimester 2. I cannot believe how fast time is flying! It is a great time to check your child's grades. 

Our official class Spelling Bee will be on Wednesday, January 23rd. This year students will not be given a list to practice from.  They will use their prior knowledge to spell words. The winner and runner-up will compete against the winners in the other third grade classrooms on January 30th.

Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science:  We will continue our Science curriculum, "Amplify."

We will also be starting a new Social Studies unit on immigration. There will be open book/graded reviews involved. The first one will be after lesson 1 this week. This is a cross-curricular unit that lends itself nicely to our reading block.

Math:  :  We will finish unit 4, module 2 on subtraction strategies and students will take a subtraction checkpoint.  I attached pictures of posters that feature the addition and subtraction strategies that students have been learning in the Math Google Classroom. Then we will begin unit 4, module 3 on measurement. Students will have a divide by 4 timed test on Thursday, January 24th.  They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.   

ELA:  This past week, we read the story Matchbox Diaries about an immigrant who could not write, so he kept a diary by placing important items in matchboxes. Students will think about items that represent an important event in their life and we will journal about it. We will also continue our unit on traditions.  In addition, we will continue our Daily 4 stations and work on nonfiction text features.

   January 14th to January 18th

On Thursday, January 17th, the third grade will be visiting the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago! Students should bring a sack lunch that is completely disposable. They should also wear comfortable shoes. It will be so much fun!

Spelling Bee:  We will have a practice Spelling Bee in our classroom on Wednesday, January 16th.  Our official class Spelling Bee will be on Wednesday, January 23rd. This year students will not be given a list to practice from.  They will use their prior knowledge to spell words. Social Science: We will start chapter 3 in our Balancing Forces unit. Students will learn more about gravity,

Math:  We will begin unit 4, module 2 on reviewing regrouping with subtraction standard algorithm and students will also learn other subtraction strategies. Students will take a divide by 3 test on Wednesday, January 16th. We are taking this a day earlier than usual due to the Shedd field trip. They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.   

Spelling:  Students have received a spelling list and should complete three activities using the spelling menu.  The test will be on Friday, January 18th.  The activities will also be due on Friday, January 18th.

ELA: We have read, What if You Had Animal Teeth? Students have decided which type of animal teeth they would choose and started writing a persuasive paragraph using text evidence and personal connections! They will finish this writing piece. We will continue Daily 4 and discuss nonfiction text features!

Students should continue reading 20 min. each night while filling out their January reading log.

Thursday 1/17: We are going to the Shedd Aquarium!
