Mrs. Burland's Bulletin
November 4th - November 8th

I really enjoyed meeting with each of you for conferences.  It was so nice to sit down and talk with you about your child.  If you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.  

Downers Grove Field Trip: The class is looking forward to attending our Downers Grove field trip (11/14), which includes a tour of historical sites, the Downers Grove History Museum, and Giordano's pizza (optional). 

We had a boo-tiful time at our Halloween Party and Halloween Parade. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make it possible! The class had so much fun!    

The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science: We will finish our History of Downers Grove unit.  Students will receive a study guide this week. The History of Downers Grove test will be on Tuesday, November 12th.

Spelling:  Students have their list of words along with a homework sheet with a list of activities. Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, November 8th.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, November 8th

ELA: This week we will be starting the study of Myths. We will read about the 12 gods of Olympus and King Midas. We will study cause and effect as well as story mapping. Furthermore, adverbs will be explored. We will also be completing Daily Oral Language (D.O.L.) focused on month abbreviations and commas in a series. Students will receive a study guide this week. There will be a D.O.L. Quiz on Friday, November 15th. 

The November Reading Log is due on Tuesday, November 5th

Math: We will finish our study of unit 2. Students have received a study guide and it is due on Wednesday, November 6th. Students will take the Unit 2 test on Thursday, November 7th. We will then begin the study of Unit 3 on fractions and decimals. Students will also take a multiplication by 10 test on Thursday, November 7th.  Due to having a unit test, we will save the times 9 test for the next week. 

Things to Remember:
Friday 11/1: No School

Monday 11/4: There is no school due to a Teacher Institute Day.
Tuesday 11/5: The November Reading Logs are due.
Wednesday 11/6: The math unit 2 study guide is due. 
Thursday 11/7: There will be a times 10 test and a unit 2 test. 
Friday 11/8: There will be a spelling test and the 3 activities are due.

Tuesday 11/12: There will be a History of Downers Grove test. 
Thursday 11/14: We will go on the Downers Grove field trip.
Friday 11/15: There will be a D.O.L. Quiz.

October 28th - November 1st

Downers Grove Field Trip: The class is looking forward to attending our Downers Grove field trip (11/14), which includes a tour of historical sites, the Downers Grove History Museum, and Giordano's pizza (optional). Field trip permission slips and pizza money is due on Wednesday, October 30th.

Halloween:
1. Our party will take place on Thursday, October 31st. The room party will go from 1:00-1:50 p.m. Our Prairieview parade will begin at 1:55 p.m.

2. We only have 15 minutes for costume changes. Please make sure your child can change into his/her costume easily and by themselves. If the costume can be worn over their clothes, then both the time to change and the chances of losing any clothes is minimized.

3. If the costume involves make up, please apply it before your child comes to school. If you send your child in with make up, then your child has to be able to apply it themselves. 

4. Please do not send any weapons (guns, swords, etc.) as part of the costume. Save those for trick-or-treating.

5. We will not have time to change back into our clothes for dismissal. Your child will wear their costume home.


Fall Conferences are geared toward meeting with students' homeroom teacher.  I look forward to meeting with you on Tuesday (10/29), and Wednesday (10/30). Winter Conferences will be geared toward meeting with math teachers. 

The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science: We will continue our study of the history of Downers Grove. 

Spelling:  Students will be given a new list of words along with a homework menu with a list of activities. Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, November 8th.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, November 8th

ELA: We will finish our haunted house papers where students try to convince a movie producer to buy their haunted house. It is descriptive writing with a persuasive flare.  Then students will be given a rubric/checklist to go over their writing. We will work on this paper throughout the week. 
The final draft is due on Thursday, October 31st.

This week we will work on identifying cause and effect with good fit articles during Daily 4. The October Reading Log will be due on Tuesday, November 5th

Math: This week we will focus on unit 2, module 4 on early division and remainders. We will finish the study of unit 2 on multi-digit multiplication and early division. Look for a study guide to come home this week. There will be a test in the week of 11/4. Students will take their multiplication by 8 test on Thursday, October 31st. 


Things to Remember:
Tuesday 10/29: Teachers will be holding conferences with parents from their homeroom.
Wednesday 10/30Teachers will be holding conferences with parents from their homeroom.
Thursday 10/31: The haunted house final draft is due. Happy Halloween! We will have our class party at 1:00 p.m. and the parade at 1:55 p.m. There will be a multiplication by 8 test.
Friday 11/1: No School

Halloween:

Please keep in mind the following guidelines when helping your child pick out a Halloween costume:
1. We only have 15 minutes for costume changes. Please make sure your child can change into his/her costume easily and by themselves. If the costume can be worn over their clothes, then both the time to change and the chances of losing any clothes is minimized.

2. If the costume involves make up, please apply it before your child comes to school. If you send your child in with make up, then your child has to be able to apply it themselves. 

3. Please do not send any weapons (guns, swords, etc.) as part of the costume. Save those for trick-or-treating. Also, costumes should not include fake blood.

4. We will not have time to change back into our clothes for dismissal. Your child will wear their costume home.

Math: We will begin the study of unit 2, module 3 on multiplication stories and strategies.   Students will also take a multiplication by 7 test on Thursday, October 24th They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.   

Spelling: We will continue our Words Their Way program.  Students received a new list of words already.  
Students will choose 3 activities, one from each column, on the Spelling Homework Menu. This will help them master their spelling words. All 3 activities should be stapled to the Spelling Homework Menu and the square initialed by a parent. It should be turned in by Friday, October 25th, which is the day of the test. The test will include 15 words from the student's list (teacher's choice) and 2 sentences, using any of their 2 words.

English Language Arts: This week we will be working on identifying character traits and text evidence when reading. 
Students will learn more about adjectives and similesThen we are going to  work on descriptive writing with a persuasive flare. The students will try to convince a movie director to buy their haunted house! We will also continue our Daily 5 Program.



Please make sure your child is reading! October logs are due by November 1st.

Things to Remember:
Thursday 10/24:  There will be a multiplication by 7 test. 
Friday 10/25: The three spelling menu activities are due and there will be a spelling test.

Remember Monday, October 14th is Columbus Day and there will be no school.  Please plan accordingly.

We will also continue our Daily 5 Program. There will also be a Daily Oral Language (D.O.L.) Quiz on Friday, October 18th. A study guide will come home on Tuesday, October 15th. 

Please make sure your child is reading! October logs are due by November 1st.

Halloween: 

The Halloween party and parade will be on October 31st. Please keep in mind the following guidelines when helping your child pick out a Halloween costume:

1. We only have 15 minutes for costume changes. Please make sure your child can change into his/her costume easily and by themselves. If the costume can be worn over their clothes, then both the time to change and the chances of losing any clothes is minimized.

2. If the costume involves make up, please apply it before your child comes to school. If you send your child in with makeup, then your child has to be able to apply it themselves. 

3. Please do not send any weapons (guns, swords, etc.) as part of the costume. Save those for trick-or-treating. Also, costumes should not include fake blood.

4. We will not have time to change back into our clothes for dismissal. Your child will wear their costume home.


We are halfway through the 1st trimester of third grade! Time sure flies! Feel free to check your child's grades online. If you are having problems doing so, please call the office.


There will be a soccer test in P.E. class on Tuesday, October 8th. Students have already received a study guide. 



The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science: We will begin the study of the history of Downers Grove.

Math: We will begin our study of unit 2 on multi-digit multiplication and early division. 
We will start the unit by building multiplication arrays.  Students will also take a multiplication by 5 test on Thursday They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.    

Spelling: We will continue our Words Their Way program. 
Students received spelling words this past Monday. Students will choose 3 activities, one from each column, on the Spelling Homework Menu. This will help them master their spelling words. All 3 activities should be stapled to the Spelling Homework Menu and the square initialed by a parent. It should be turned in by Friday, October 11, which is the day of the test. The test will include 15 words from the student's list (teacher's choice) and 2 sentences, using any of their 2 words.

English Language Arts: This week we will be working on identifying the theme of a story. We will also discuss story elements and compare and contrast different stories. While reading we will look for characters with a growth mindset. 


Please make sure your child is reading! October logs are due by November 1st.
