Mrs. Burland's Bulletin
April 30th to May 4th

It was wonderful to see you at Open House!  It was so much fun watching the students show off their projects! Thank you for coming!

Look for a zoo field trip form to come home. We will go to Brookfield Zoo on Thursday, May 17th!

MAP Testing will take place May 8th through May 11th. I will give more details in next weeks blog. 


The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science: There will be one more Chicago test (Chicago Test 3) on Wednesday, May 2nd. Students may use their study guide on the test. Then we will begin the study of Animals Through Time using the program, Mystery Science. 

Spelling:  Students received a new spelling list and 3 activities sheet. The 3 activities will be due on Friday, May 4th.  They will take their test on Friday, May 4th, as well. 


ELA: We will begin writing letters to our second grade pen pals! We will continue reading The One and Only Ivan. While reading The One and Only Ivan, students will working on many different reading skills. April Reading Logs are due on Tuesday, May 1st. May Reading Logs will go home on Monday. 

Math:   We have completed the study of unit 6 on Multiplication & Division, Data & Fractions. The unit 6 study guides are due on Monday, April 30th. We will then begin Unit 7, titled Reviewing & Extending Fractions, Decimals & Multi-Digit Multiplication. Unit 7, module 1 focuses on comparing fractions and writing equivalent fractions.





Things to Remember: 
Monday 4/30: Math unit 6 study guides are due. 
Tuesday 5/1: The April Reading Log is due.  There is a math unit 6 test. 
Wednesday 5/2:  There will be Chicago Test III
Friday 5/4:  The 3 spelling activities are due and there will be a spelling test.

April 23rd to April 27th

Please join us for our spring Open House on Thursday, April 26th from 6:30 - 8:00.  Third grade's Open House themes are space and Chicago, so come wearing your favorite Chicago team's apparel!  There will also be a book fair.  I look forward to seeing each of you! 

Today marks the halfway point of the trimester. Please check your child's grades.

Zoo Field Trip: As enrichment for our ELA unit on The One and Only Ivan and an upcoming unit in science on ecosystems, we will go to Brookfield Zoo on May 17th! I will pass out permission slips at the end of the week. They will be due by Friday, May 11th.

This will be Zubair Virani's last week of student teaching. He will be missed by the class and me, but I am very excited for him to begin his teaching career! Any school and class would be lucky to have him!

Bring the Change Spirit Week- April 23rd- April 27th!
We are raising money for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Foundation while raising school spirit! Bring change for a great cause and wear something fun!  
Monday- PJ Penny Day (wear your pajamas and bring in pennies)
Tuesday- Neon Nickels Day (wear bright colors and bring in nickels)
Wednesday- Dazzling Dimes Day (wear something shiny or unique and bring dimes)
Thursday- Crazy Quarters Day (wear crazy socks or a hat and bring quarters)
Friday- Team up for Leukemia (wear team jerseys or colors and bring all coins) 

The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science : We will continue reading about Chicago. There will be a Chicago Test II on Monday, April 23rd. Students have already received a study guide. They will be able to use the study guide on the test.  For science, students are studying the planets and our solar system. 

Math:  We will finish unit 6 on Multiplication & Division, Data, & Fractions.  The unit 6 study guide will go home this week and will be due on Monday, April 30th. The unit 6 test is on Tues
day, May 1st. Then we will begin unit 7 on Reviewing & Extending Fractions, Decimals & Multi-Digit Multiplication. 

Spelling: Students will receive a new spelling list. The 3 activities will be due on Friday, May 4th. They will also have their spelling test on Friday, May 4th.

ELA: 
We will continue reading The One and Only Ivan! This week students will find character traits along with text evidence. We will continue our Daily 5 program.

April 16th to April 20th

We will continue PARCC testing. Students have completed their math PARCC tests and we will now complete PARCC testing for ELA on Monday, April 16th, Wednesday, April 18th, and Thursday, April 19th.  Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep, a healthy breakfast, and a good snack! Chromebooks need to be fully charged every night and ear phones should be brought to school daily! Please check with your child about whether they have headphones at school.

Tuesday, April 17th is an early dismissal day.  Please plan accordingly. Students will be dismissed at 11 a.m.

The Upcoming Week at School: 
Social Science:  We will continue our study of Chicago. Students will learn about the World Fair and about the first Ferris Wheel. Look for a study guide to come home this week. There will be a test in the week of April 23rd.

Math: We will also continue unit 6 on Multiplication & Division, Data, & Fractions.  We will continue Unit 6, module 2 which reviews area and perimeter and then we will work on module 3 which features line plots, fractions, and division. 

Spelling: Students will receive a new spelling list. They should complete 3 activities by Friday, April 20th. There test will also be on Friday, April 20th

We will continue reading The One and Only Ivan! We will also continue our Daily 5 program. Students should continue to read 20 minutes each night.

April 9th to April 13th

There will be PARCC testing April 9th to April 19th. We will be testing Math on Monday, 9th, Tuesday, April 10th, Wednesday, April 11th, and Thursday, April 12th. We will test ELA the following week. Thank you to Mr. Jayne and Mr. Showalter for coming in to do a Science is Fun demonstration as representatives from Nalco! They delivered a wonderful message about the importance of perseverance! The students enjoyed all of the experiments and learned about the scientific method! In the picture below, Mr. Jayne used sand to filter dirty water.

Social Science: Students will continue to make a Chicago Fire flip book and write a story about the Chicago Fire from Cow O'Leary's point of view!

Math:  This week we will be PARCC testing during math class, Monday through Thursday. Today we practiced a PARCC test as a class. Students also have PARCC practice tests in their math Google Classroom and can use them to help prepare.
