Miss Pellin's Post

August 29th - September 2nd

I really enjoyed getting to know my homeroom this past week and I am excited to meet my math class!

I am looking forward to seeing each of you at curriculum night at 6:30 pm on Thursday, September 1st. At curriculum night you will have the chance to sign up for conferences and will be given information about the school year.

Please send your child to school with one of their T-shirts (it won't get ruined and will be returned by Friday) and a hanger. You will be able to see why I am making such a strange request on Thursday evening at Curriculum Night.

Binders have been organized, so they will be coming home daily with assignment notebooks.

The Second Week of 2011 at School:
Science: This week we will focus on Social Studies.

Math:  Math will not begin until Thursday, 9/1. For math related information, your child's math teacher will provide this on her blog.

Social Studies: We will study directions. Students will learn about cardinal and intermediate directions.

Spelling: This week in spelling we will start with Lesson 1. These are "Back to School" words. We will pretest on Monday and students will receive homework that will be due Friday. Also, on Friday we will have our first test worth 20 points.  A sheet will come home on Monday, August 29th explaining our spelling program more in depth.

Reading: This week we will start introducing the reading strategies that we will be utilizing throughout the rest of the year using picture books. The strategies are predicting, inferencing, visualizing, monitoring/clarifying, phonics/decoding, summarizing (fiction and non-fiction), questioning, connecting, and evaluating. Students will have homework every night, which is to read any book of their choice for 20 minutes.

English: We will begin to study sentences. Students will be able to tell the differences between statements, questions, commands, and exclamation sentences. We will also begin Daily Oral Language. Each day students will correct sentences from the board. This week students will be correcting end marks and capitalizing proper nouns.

Things to Remember:
Thursday 9/1:
Curriculum Night will begin at 6:30 P.M.

Friday 9/2: There will be a Spelling "list 1" test.
