Miss Pellin's Post

October 3rd - October 7th

Thank you so much for sending in apples for Johnny Appleseed's birthday!  Also, thank you to the parents who sent in extra supplies!  Above are pictures of the class wearing their apple glasses.

Picture Day is on Tuesday, October 4th!

Our class earning a Marble Party for great behavior! On Wednesday, October 5th students can bring in a stuffed animal and wear appropriate pajamas!


The Seventh Week of 2016 at School:
Science: We will study chapter 9 on the water cycle. We will continue studying lesson one which focuses on where water is found on earth. Then we will begin lesson 2 titled, What is the Water Cycle?

Social Studies: We will focus on science.

Math: 
We will begin our study of unit 2 on multi-digit multiplication and early division. We will begin with building multiplication arrays.  Students will also take a multiplication by 5 test on Wednesday, October 5th They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.   Students who pass on Wednesday, October 5th will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.  

Spelling: We will continue our Ways Their Way program.  Students will receive a new list of words along with a homework sheet with a list of activities.  Students should complete 3 activities and turn them in on Friday, October 14th.  One of the activities listed cannot be turned in.   Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, October 14th.  

English Language Arts: We will continue our writer's workshop. We have just started a unit on writing fractured fairy tales. 

Also, we will continue our folktales unit. During this unit we will study author's purpose (persuade, inform, and entertain). We will also continue our Daily 4 program.

The September reading log is due on Monday, October 3rd. Students received an October reading log.

Monday 10/3: The September reading log is due.
Tuesday 10/4: It's Picture Day!
Wednesday 10/5:  There will be a multiplication by 5 test. It is our class Marble Party!

Friday 10/14: There will be a spelling test and 3 activities are due.

September 26th- September 30th

Monday, September 26th is Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. We will be having a celebration! Please send a peeled, cored, and sliced apple with your child on Monday, September 26th to be used to make applesauce for the class.   Thank you again to the parents who donated bowls, spoons, and juice boxes!  

Tuesday, September 27th will be an early dismissal day. Students will be dismissed at 11:35 a.m. Please plan accordingly. 

The Sixth Week of 2016 at School:
Science: We will begin chapter 9 on the water cycle.

Social Studies: Students will learn about the four hemispheres.  


Math: 
We will finish our study of unit 1 which focuses on multiplication and division.  The unit one study guide is due on Tuesday, September 27th. The unit 1 test will be on Wednesday, September 28th. Next, we will study measurement.  Students will also take a multiplication by 4 test on Wednesday, September 28th They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.   Students who pass on Wednesday, September 28th will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.

Monday 9/26: It's Johnny Appleseed's birthday celebration!  Students should bring in a cored, sliced, and peeled apple.
Tuesday 9/27: The math unit 1 study guide is due. Students will be dismissed at 11:35 a.m.
Wednesday 9/28:  There will be a multiplication by 4 test and a unit 1 test. 

Friday 9/30: There will be a spelling test and  3 activities are due.

The Fifth Week of 2016 at School:

Science: This week we will focus on social studies.

Social Studies: There will be a Continent and Ocean Test on Thursday, September 22nd. This week students will be assigned a continent. Students will learn how to make a google presentation and will prepare a couple slides on their continent.


Math: 
We will continue our study of unit 1 which focuses on multiplication and division.  This week students will make multiplication comparisons. Students will take a multiplication by 3 test on Wednesday, September 21st They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.   Students who pass on Wednesday, September 21st will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.

English Language Arts: We will continue our writer's workshop. Students have picked one of their writing pieces to focus on and they will start revising their writing piece. This past week students learned about point of view (first person, second person, and third person). The stories we are writing at this time are written in first person. 

Also, we will continue our folktales unit during reading workshop and students will learn more about fables. We started our Daily 4 program and students enjoyed the stations. During one station, students work on the Lexia program. Ask your child to show you this program on their chromebook.

Thursday 9/22: There will be a Continent and Ocean Test.

September 12th - September 16th

Monday, September 26th is Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. We will be having a celebration! Please send a peeled, cored, and sliced apple with your child on Monday, September 26th to be used to make applesauce for the class. We are looking for donations of small bowls, plastic spoons, and apple juice. If this is something you are interested in helping with, please email me or send the items in any day before Monday, September 26th. Thank you in advance for your help!

The Fourth Week of School:


Science: We will focus on social studies this week.


Social Studies: We will learn about the continents and oceans.  Students will research facts about different continents.  


Math: 
We will continue our study of Module 1 which focuses on multiplication and division.  Students will begin to take timed multiplication tests.  We will begin with multiplication by 2.  They will have two and a half minutes to complete 26 problems.  The first test will be on Wednesday, September 14th.  Students who pass on Wednesday, September 14th will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.  

In the your child's math google classroom, I have posted the Home Connection Workbook and the Student Workbook. Students can use these pages as a resource if they forget to take their homework home. Students also have been given a username and password for xtramath to practice their math facts. They can find the link to xtramath in the math google classroom as well.


Spelling: Students were given their list of words along with a homework sheet with a list of activities.  Students should complete 3 activities.  The activities they complete should be turned in on Friday, September 16th.  Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.   Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, September 16th.  

English Language Arts:  We'll be focusing on writing (writer's workshop) and reading (reader's workshop) throughout the school year. The genre of fairy tales will be discussed this week. In writer's workshop, we will be editing our current writing.

Monday 9/12: There will be a Magazine Drive assembly.   
Wednesday 9/14:  There will be a multiplication by 2 test.  
Friday 9/16: Students spelling activities are due and they will take their spelling test.

September 5th- September 9th

In the pictures above students are using the STEM steps to try and save Fred (the worm) by safely putting him back into his inner tube without using their hands. Ask your child how they succeeded. 

The Third Week of School:
Science:  This week we will focus on social studies.

Social Studies:  On Thursday, September 8th students will take a Direction Quiz. Students have received a study guide and can use their green Map Essentials book pg. 12-15 to help them study.

Math: My math class will be following a fourth grade curriculum using our new math program, Bridges.  Although we will be following the fourth grade curriculum, we will be interweaving third grade concepts as needed.  This information will be determined by pretests.  There will also be some enrichment with the introduction of fifth grade concepts.

The genre of folktales will be continued this week as we close read Rumpelstiltskin. Students also received a September Reading Log. They should read for 20 minutes for 20 days during September. Please initial the log each time they read.

I loved the story ideas students came up with today about the trouble their twins got into after Curriculum Night.

Things to Remember:
Monday 9/5: Today is Labor Day, so there is no school.
