February 1st through February 5th


Remember Tuesday, February 2nd will be a teacher institute day. There will be no school.

The Fifth Week of 2010 at School:

Science: We will learn more about solar and lunar eclipses. The picture on the left is of a lunar eclipse. The picture to the right is of a solar eclipse.


Students can use their new Science textbook online from the website http://www.thinkcentral.com/to help understand the subject. In order to access the Science textbook at home go to the same website. The user name is your parent connect number. The password is ccsd66.

Social Studies: There will not be a test on Chapter 3. We will begin the study of Egypt.

Math: This week we will have a "x9" multiplication test on Friday, February 5th. Students should be studying their "x9" facts every night. We will also continue our study of chapter 14 (geometry). The chapter 14 test date has been changed to Thursday, February 5th due to the district Spelling Bee.

Spelling: There will be a "list #20" Spelling test on Friday, February 5th.

Reading: The class will begin to study inferencing. Students will receive vocabulary words from the book Ramona Quimby, Age 8. Students will have a vocabulary test on Monday, February 8th.

English: We will finish the study of adjectives and adverbs. There will be a unit 4 test on Friday, February 5th. Students will complete a study guide for unit 4 in class on Wednesday, February 3rd.

Things to Remember:
Tuesday 2/2: There will be a teacher institute day. There will be no school.
Friday 2/5: We will have a multiplication test and a spelling test. There will be a unit 4 English test. We will have a chapter 14 Math test.


Monday 2/8: There will be a vocabulary test.

January 25th to January 29th



Next Friday, January 29th will be a class field trip!! This is an "in class" field trip where students will make models of eclipses and craters on the moon. They will even get to taste astronaut ice cream! I wonder if the taste will send us in orbit!



The Fourth Week of 2010 at School:
Science: We will continue our study of solar and lunar eclipses. We will study the phases of the moon. Can you tell me if the moon is waxing or waning?

Social Studies: We will finish our study of culture and Chapter 4. There will not be an overall test on this chapter since we started it before winter break began.

Math: This week we will have a "x8" multiplication test on Friday, January 29th. Students should be studying their "x8" facts every night. We will also begin our study of geometry.

Spelling: There will be a "list #19" Spelling test on Friday, January 29th .

Reading: The class will work on writing an extended response to a question on the book Lost and Found. Students will practice reading different stories and answering multiple choice questions, as well.

English: We will continue the study of adjectives and adverbs.

Friday 1/29: We will have a multiplication test and a spelling test. We will also have "in class" field trip!

January 18th to January 22nd


Remember that Monday, January 18th is Martin Luther King's Birthday. There will be no school, please plan accordingly.

Our two class winners of the Spelling Bee will compete in the 3rd grade Spelling Bee on Friday, January 22nd against the other class winners. Good luck Jennifer and Maya!

Everyone did a great job on their Culture Day presentation and we all enjoyed the tasty day! Thanks for all the wonderful things everyone brought to make our day special.

Science: We will continue the study of space. Students will learn what causes solar and lunar eclipses.

Social Studies: We will finish our study of immigrants this week. We will focus on how immigrants adjusted to American life beginning with Ellis Island.

Math: We will continue the study of measurement (Chapter 20 and 21). There will be a test on measurements on Friday, January 22nd. Students will not have to memorize conversions such as 1 kilogram = 1000 grams. Rather there will posters hanging up. There will be a multiplication "x11" test on Friday, January 22nd.

Spelling: There will be a Spelling test on Friday, January 22nd on words from the previous 6 tests. The words will not be handed out. We will review the spelling rules of each of the past six tests. A practice sheet (17B) using different words (but the same rules) will be handed out Tuesday, January 16th. The final test will follow the practice sheet format.

Reading: Students will continue to work on the strategy of summarizing. We will practice summarizing using the story Lost and Found by Mark Teague. Vocabulary words for the story will be handed out on Friday, January 15th and there will be a test on Thursday, January 15th.

English: We will begin the study of adjectives.

January 11th to January 15th

Remember that Monday, January 18th is Martin Luther King's Birthday. There will be no school, please plan accordingly.

This week we will be taking the Iowa Basics Tests. These are standardized tests that will assess students in the subjects of reading, vocabulary, math problem solving, math computation, word usage, word expression, math estimation, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Please make sure students get to bed early, eat a healthy breakfast in the morning, and bring a healthy snack to school each day this week.

Students received words before the winter break for a school spelling bee. It is up to the students whether they would like to prepare for this. We will have one practice spelling bee in class next week. The final class spelling bee will be on Friday, January 15th. Our class winner will be selected to represent our class in the 3rd grade spelling bee on Friday, January 22nd.

An informational sheet was sent home on Thursday, January 7th about Cosmic Capers. This is an "in class" field trip where students will make models of eclipses and craters on the moon. They will even get to taste astronaut ice cream. Please send $6.50 to school with your child by Friday, January 15th.

Social Studies: We will continue to study culture and immigration in chapter 3. We will be celebrating Culture Day on Thursday, January 14th. Each student should be prepared to share something about his or her cultural heritage with the class.

Math: We will continue the study of measurement (Chapter 20). Students will begin to learn about the metric system. Some of the math time will be devoted to Iowa testing. There will be a multiplication "x7" test on Friday, January 15th.

Spelling: There will not be a Spelling test this week due to the Iowa Basic testing.

Reading: Students will begin to work on the strategy of summarizing. Most of the reading time will be devoted to the Iowa tests.

English: We will finish our celebrity letters. There will be a letter quiz on Tuesday, January 12th. Students will receive a study guide on Friday, January 8th.

Monday 1/11: We will take Iowa Basic Tests.
Tuesday 1/12: We will take Iowa Basic Tests. There will be a letter quiz.
Wednesday 1/13: We will take Iowa Basic Tests.
Thursday 1/14: We will have Culture Day.
Friday 1/15: We will have a multiplication test.
