Mrs. Burland's Bulletin
March 16th through March 20th
                                            

Happy St. Patrick's Day! "May the road rise up to meet you and the wind be always at your back."  I hope you have a safe and quiet weekend!

The students did a great job on their country presentations! They brought in wonderful showcase items and I enjoyed learning more about where their family/ancestors immigrated to the U.S. from. 

The Upcoming Week at School:
Reading:  We will study prefixes and suffixes. We will also read good fit books.

Spelling:  Students will receive a spelling list and should complete three activities using the spelling menu.  The test will be on Friday, March 27th.  The activities will also be due on Friday, March 27th.  

Math:  We will continue the study of unit 6 focusing on division and multiplication in module 1. Students will take a divide by 12 test on Thursday, March 19th.

Social Science: In social studies, we will continue the study of Chicago. Our focus will be on the first Chicagoans, waterways, and the Great Chicago Fire. We will also continue our Amplify unit on Inheritance and Traits.  

Things to Remember:
Thursday 3/19: Students will take the divide by 12 test.

March 9th through March 13th

Trimester 2 ended today. Teachers are still working on finalizing grades. You will be emailed when grades are completed next week. 

The third grade students will go on a field trip to the Chicago History Museum on Friday, March 27th! If your child has not already turned in their permission slip, they should do so by Monday, March 16th

The Upcoming Week at School:
Reading: This week students will learn about various prefixes.  They will also present on their country.

Culture Week: Please make sure to look at the letter that was sent home about your child's country report! In a nutshell, this is what is expected from each student:

1. Pick any 3 chapters and practice reading them. Students will read these to the class.
2. Make something that shows your connection to the country (slide, poster, index card, video).
3. Bring in 2 items that represent your country (ie: music, food, instrument, pictures, book, souvenirs, flag photo, etc.)

-If a student picked a country they do not have a connection to, then they can show three showcase items instead.

I look forward to hearing each student present on their assigned date (3/9, 3/10, 3/11, or 3/12). Students will receive a paper copy of their research paper on Friday, March 6th, when the paper is due that they can use to help practice. For the time being, they can practice reading their paper from their Chromebook.

Math:   We are finishing the study of unit 5 on Geometry and Measurement. Students have received a study guide, which is due on Monday, March 9th.  The Unit 5 Test will be on Tuesday, March 10th. Then we will begin unit 6 on multiplication, division, data, and fractions.  There will be a divide by 11 test on Friday, March 13th. We will not have math on Thursday, March 12th due to our early dismissal. 

Social Science: We will begin a unit on Chicago! Students will learn about Chicago's nicknames, its early history and diverse neighborhoods!

Things to Remember:
Monday 3/9: The math unit 5 study guide is due. There will be Country Report Presentations. 
Tuesday 3/10: Students will take the Unit 5 Test. There will be Country Report Presentations. 
Wednesday 3/11: There will be Country Report Presentations. 
Thursday 3/12: There will be Country Report Presentations.  Students will be dismissed at 11 a.m.
Friday 3/13: There will be a spelling test and the activities are due.

March 2nd through March 6th


On Friday, March 27, the third grade will be visiting the Chicago History Museum in Chicago. The students will be able to visit all the exhibits at the Museum! The field trip will give us the opportunity to visit our beautiful city of Chicago, which is the focus of our upcoming social science unit. I will send home the permission slip on Monday.

Reading: This week students will finish their country chapter books. They are  due on Friday, March 6th. We will also study prefixes and suffixes. Students should turn in their February reading logs on Monday, March 2nd, if they have not already done so. They will receive a March reading log.

There will be a unit 5 test on Tuesday, March 10th. We will have a divide by 10 timed test on Thursday, March 5th.  They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.  

Social Science: We will continue our science unit on inheritance and traits. Did your child tell you about the offspring they created?

Monday 3/2: Students should turn in their February reading logs.
Thursday 3/5: There will be a divide by 10 test. 
Friday 3/6: The country chapter books are due.

Monday 3/9: The math unit 5 study guide is due. There will be Country Report Presentations. 
Tuesday 3/10: Students will take the Unit 5 Test. There will be Country Report Presentations. 
Wednesday 3/11: There will be Country Report Presentations.

Students have enjoyed researching for their country chapter book! They have loved sharing facts with one another! 

We will not have school on Friday, February 28th due to an institute Day.  Please plan accordingly.

The Upcoming Week at School:
ELA:  This week students will finish their research notes on their country and then they will type their country chapter book. If they do not finish typing their chapters in class, you may see it is for homework in their assignment notebook. 

The February Reading Log should be turned in on Thursday, February 27th or Monday, March 2nd. 

Spelling:  Students have already received a spelling list and should complete three activities using the spelling menu.  The test will be on Thursday, February 27th.  The activities will also be due on Thursday, February 27th.  

Math:   This week students will study polygons and their attributes. They will solve polygon riddles and then create their own. Then we will study area and perimeter using multi-digit numbers. We will have a divide by 9 timed test on Thursday, February 27th.  They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.  

Social Science: We will continue our Inheritance and Traits curriculum. Students will further investigate how traits are passed down from parents to offspring by building "clay creature offspring" using instructions about the "parent creatures."  The students will then compare creatures and observe the variation in traits among siblings. 

Things to Remember:
Thursday 2/27:  The spelling 3 activities are due and there will be a spelling test. There will be a divide by 9 test. The February Reading Log is due. 
Friday 2/28: There will not be school due to an institute day. 

Monday 3/2: The February Reading Log is due.

February 17th through February 21st




The pictures above show the Valentine's Day animal bags students made to hold their cards! Thank you again to our room mom, all parent helpers, and the parents who sent in treats! The students had so much fun!!!

We will not have school on Friday, February 14th or Monday, February 17th.  Please plan accordingly.

The Upcoming Week at School:
Reading: This week students will work on identifying the main idea and details using good fit articles.  

Starting on Friday, students will begin taking notes for an expository writing piece on a country where their family/ancestors have immigrated from. Before Friday, students should decide which country they would like to choose. 

Spelling:  Students will receive a spelling list and should complete three activities using the spelling menu.  The test will be on Thursday, February 27th.  The activities will also be due on Thursday, February 27th.  

Math:   We will continue unit 5, which focuses on Geometry & Measurement (Area and Perimeter). This week we will focus on studying polygons in module 2. We will have a divide by 8 timed test on Thursday, February 2oth.  They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.  

Social Science: This week in science students will learn about genes in their Inheritance and Traits unit. 

Things to Remember:
Monday 2/17: There will not be school.
Thursday 2/20:  There will be a divide by 8 test.

Thursday 2/27: There will be a spelling test and the three activities are due. The February reading log is also due.

February 10th through February 14th

On Thursday, February 13th we will celebrate Valentine's Day.  Thank you so much to our room mom and to all the parents who are helping run the activities! I also appreciate the parents who are sending in treats and supplies! The students are going to have a blast!  If students choose to pass out Valentine's Day cards, they should get a card for everyone in the class.  There are 22 students in the class (13 boys and 9 girls).  We will pass out cards on Thursday before the class party.

Today we had a lot of fun celebrating our 100th day of school! I enjoyed seeing the students' 100 year old costumes! 

We will not have school on Friday, February 14th or Monday, February 17th.  Please plan accordingly.

The Upcoming Week at School:
Reading: This week we will work in our Daily 4 stations on identifying main idea and details of good fit stories. 

Spelling:  Students already received a spelling list and should complete three activities using the spelling menu.  The test will be on Thursday, February 13th.  The activities will also be due on Thursday, February 13th.  

Math:  We will continue to study angles and circles in unit 5, module 1. Then we will study lines and polygons in module 2. We will have a divide by 7 timed test on Wednesday, February 12th.  This has been moved up a day due to math being canceled on Thursday, February 13th. They will have two minutes to complete 25 problems.  

Social Science: We will continue our science unit on Inheritance and Traits.

Things to Remember:
Wednesday 2/12: There will be a divide by 7 test.
Thursday 2/13:  The spelling 3 activities are due and there will be a spelling test. We will have our Valentine's Day Party!
Friday 2/15 and Monday 2/18 There will not be school.

February 3rd - February 7th

On Thursday, February 13th we will celebrate Valentine's Day! If students choose to pass out Valentine's Day cards, they should get a card for everyone in the class.  There are 22 students in the class. If you are attaching a treat to the cards, please make sure there are not any nuts.

Congratulations to the third grade spelling bee winners, Hailey and Ethan! They will be competing against representatives from grades 3-8 on February 11th! Let's wish them luck!

The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Studies:  There will be a chapter 3 social studies test on Friday, February 7th. Students have received a study guide. They should use this guide, their graded reviews (in their social studies folder), and their textbooks to study. They should leave their textbooks at home until the date of the test. This way they do not need to carry them back and forth. 

In science, we will continue our Science curriculum, "Amplify" on inheritance and traits.
