Miss Pellin's Post

August 31st - September 4th

Our school had the honor to welcome and listen to professional BMX biker, Matt Wilhelm, share his message of never giving up and standing up for one another.  He is pictured above getting ready to jump over three Prairieview teachers.  No one was hurt during his successful jump!

Please come to Curriculum Night at 6:30 pm on Thursday, September 3rd. At Curriculum Night you will be given information about the school year.

A few reminders:
Please label all envelopes sent in with your child's name, their grade, what is in the envelope, and my name.

Please review the Prairieview Handbook at
http://www.ccsd66.org/schools/prairieview/.  On the left hand side you will find a link to the Student Handbook.

A message from our P.E. teacher, Mrs. Cushing:
Kids in Action:  Kids in Action is a way of having your child show their classmates and myself and the school what type of activities they do outside of school.  I am asking the third graders to bring in ONE picture of themselves performing some kind of physical activity they like to do.  This picture will be displayed for others to see.  If your child would like to do this, please have the picture in by September 4th.  Fourth and fifth graders will have the chance to do this later in the year.

Third graders see me FIRST thing in the morning.  Chances are there will be dew on the grass.  Third graders see me FIRST thing in the morning.  It is a good idea for the third graders to bring an extra pair of shoes and socks for after PE.

The Second Week of 2015 at School:
Science: We will begin with social studies.

Math:  I am excited to meet my math class on Monday, August 31st!  My math class will be following a fourth grade curriculum using our new math program, Bridges.  Although we will be following the fourth grade curriculum, we will be interweaving third grade concepts as needed.  This information will be determined by pretests.  There will also be some enrichment with the introduction of fifth grade concepts.

Social Studies: We will study directions. Students will learn about cardinal and intermediate directions.  Look for a study guide to come home.  There will be a quiz on Friday, September 4th.

Spelling: This week students will take the spell inventory to start our program Words Their Way.  Students worked with this program last year.  The inventory will help me determine where students should start in the program this year.

English Language Arts: I will start introducing/reviewing the reading strategies that we will be utilizing throughout the rest of the year using picture books.  Then students will use good fit books to practice using various strategies such as making connections, predicting, and inferring.  Students will use these concepts to study dynamic versus static characterization.  We will also work on our reading stamina.  For Language, students will review capitalization.  They will also learn to differentiate simple, compound, and complex sentences.  Students will be pretested on their prior knowledge.

Things to Remember:
Thursday 9/3:  It is Curriculum Night!
Friday 9/4: There will be a direction quiz.
