Mrs. Burland's Post
January 7th to January 11th

Thank you so much for the very generous gifts! I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday! We cleaned out our binders. Please make sure students empty their "Keep at Home" folder before returning to school. Also, I have noticed supplies have started to dwindle. Please ask your child what he/she needs before we start the new year together! School will resume on Monday, January 8th

We had a fun filled week leading up to winter break. The class enjoyed the movie, Elf, and had a great time bowling at Brunswick Zone!







The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science: We will continue our Amplify curriculum! Students will learn more about magnets. They will explore which metals the magnet attracts and repels.  

Math:   When we return from break, students will begin Unit 4, Module 1 on place value and rounding. Students will also take a divide by 2 division test on Thursday, January 10th. The division tests look very similar to the multiplication tests. Students will have two minutes to complete 26 problems and it will be worth 10 points.

Spelling:  Students will receive a new spelling list and should complete three activities using the new spelling menu.  The test will be on Friday, January 18th.  The activities will also be due on Friday, January 18th.  

ELA: Students will begin the week by writing a paragraph about their New Year's Resolution. We will continue our second unit on culture and traditions. Students will read about tooth traditions around the world when they read, Throw Your Tooth on the Roof. They will then write about their tradition when they lose a tooth. Next, we will read, What if You Had Animal Teeth? Students will decide which type of animal teeth they would choose and write a persuasive paragraph using text evidence about why the animal teeth they chose are the best! We will continue Daily 4 and learn more about verbs!

December Reading Logs will be due on Monday, January 7th.  A January reading log was sent home on Friday.  


Things to Remember:
Monday 1/7:  December Reading Logs are due.
Thursday 1/10: There will be a divide by 2 test.  

Friday 1/18:  There will be a spelling test and 3 activities are due.

December 17th- December 21st

The class is looking forward to attending Elf on Tuesday, December 18th. If you have not already, please send in your child's permission slip.

They are also excited to go bowling on Friday, December 21st.  

The Upcoming Week of School:
Social Science: We will continue our unit titled, Balancing Forces. We will keep investigating the question, "What objects do magnetic forces act on?"

Math: We have finished our study of Unit 3 on fractions and decimals. Students have received a study guide and it is due on Monday,  December 17th. The Unit 3 Test will be on Wednesday, December 19th. There are many videos on fractions and decimals in my math Google classroom that students can watch in order to review. 

Spelling: 
Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Thursday, December 20th. Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.  Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Thursday, December 20th. 

ELA:   We will continue our study of culture and traditions. They will also read good fit articles and books during our Daily 4 stations. 

Students should keep reading for 20 min. each night and fill out their December reading logs. The December reading logs will be due when they get back from break on Monday, January 7th. I will give students their January reading logs before they leave for break.

The class is looking forward to attending Elf on Tuesday, December 18th. If you have not already, please send in your child's permission slip.

The students had so much fun performing their myth reader's theater. I was so proud of their hard work! I will add the videos to Seesaw! 

The Upcoming Week of School:
Social Science: We will continue our unit titled, Balancing Forces. This week our investigations will be focused on, "What objects do magnetic forces act on?"

Math: We will study Unit 3, Module 3 on decimals and then Module 4 on fractions and decimals. Students will complete  a checkpoint this week on fractions and decimals. Look for a study guide to come home. There will be a test in the week of December 17th.   I have added videos and games in Google Classroom for fractions and will do the same for decimals. Students will take a mixed multiplication test on Thursday, December 13th.There will be 40 problems with facts ranging from x0 to x9. Students will have 3 minutes to complete the test. Each problem will be worth a half point, totaling 20 points. There will not be retakes. They have received two practice tests.

ELA:  We will finish our snow globe writing project. Then w
e will begin our second reading unit titled, Culture and Traditions. The first story students will read is The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco. It tells the story of a special family quilt that started in Russia and made its way to the United States in the early 20th century. They will also read good fit articles and books during our Daily 4 stations. 

Students should continue reading 20 min. each night and fill out their new December reading logs.
