We had a terrific first week of school! I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know your children! I am looking forward to a wonderful year!

Picture Day will take place on Wednesday, August 29th. I sent home a Picture Day form with your child. Please return the form by August 29th, if you would like to purchase pictures.

Please come to Curriculum Night at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, August 29th. At Curriculum Night you will be given information about the school year.

We will be MAP testing on Tuesday (math) and Thursday (reading).

The First Week of 2018 at School:
Social Studies: We will study directions. Students will learn about cardinal and intermediate directions.

Science: We will begin with social studies.

Spelling: Students will take the spell inventory to start our program, Words Their Way.  Fortunately, students worked with this program last year.  The inventory will help me determine where students should start in the program this year.  I should have their word sorts to them by the end of next week. We'll officially start the "menu homework" after Labor Day weekend.

English Language Arts: This week we will be starting our year focusing on various reading skills using exciting literature. I will model finding character traits, theme, and cause and effect while reading ChrysanthemumRecess Queen, and If You Take a Mouse to School. We will also work on finding good fit books. Throughout the year, students will practice these reading skills using good fit books and articles.

On Friday, students will bring home their September reading log. I expect my students to read for 20 min. for 20 days each month. I know many students read more than that, but this log will be part of their grade.

Math:  In third grade students switch classes for math. If your child is in Mrs. Burland's math class, please read this section. I am excited to meet my math class on Monday!  My math class will be following a fourth grade curriculum using our math program, Bridges.  Although we will be following the fourth grade curriculum, we will be interweaving third grade concepts as needed.  This information will be determined by pretests.  There will also be some enrichment with the introduction of fifth grade concepts.  Our first unit is titled, Multiplicative Thinking. Students will take a pretest this week.

Things to Remember:
Wednesday 8/29:  It is picture day and Curriculum Night!
