Miss Pellin's Post 
April 30th to May 4th




Our school has organized a wonderful Book Angel Book Drive to collect books for schools in need.  Students have been asked to bring in new or used books and the grade level with the most books collected will win a prize!  The last day to donate books is Friday, May 4th.

My homeroom will have reading MAP testing on Wednesday, May 2nd.  Please make sure students get a good night sleep and eat breakfast!

The Sixteenth Week of 2012 at School:
Science: We will continue the study of heat, light, and sound in chapter 14.  

Social Studies: Students will continue to study chapter 3.  We will focus on lesson 4 this week.   Also, we will be celebrating Culture Day on Monday, May 7th and Tuesday, May 8th. Each student should be prepared to share something about his or her cultural heritage with the class.  Please take a look at the Culture Day packet that was sent home with your child.  The culture day planning sheet is due on Monday, April 30th.  On Monday I will tell the students which half of the class will present on Monday, May 7th and who will present on May 8th.  

Spelling:  Students will take pretest 24 on Monday, April 30th.  Students will take the post-test and turn in homework on Friday, May 4th.

Reading: This week we will finish the study of poetry.  There will be a poetry vocabulary quiz on Monday, April 30th.  Then we will begin the study of magic.  We will read about the great magician, Harry Houdini, while practicing many reading strategies!  Students will learn a magic trick for our class magic show on May 14th from 10:20a.m -11:00a.m.  They will have class time to look through magic books to find a trick they like.  If you would like to join us for the magic show, please email me at mpellin@ccsd66.org.

English: We will finish the study of capitalization and punctuation in unit 5.  There will be test on unit 5 on Thursday, May 3rd. We will then begin learning about expository writing.  Students will begin writing an expository paper.  

Math: I moved the chapter 23 test to Tuesday, May 1st.  Then we will begin the study of chapter 24 on dividing larger numbers.  We will have a division by 11 test on Friday, May 4th.

Monday 4/30:  There will be a poetry vocabulary quiz.
Tuesday 5/1:  There will be a chapter 23 math test.

Wednesday 5/2:  There will be MAP testing.  
Thursday 5/3: There will be an English test.
Friday 5/4: There will be a spelling test.  There will be a division test.  


Monday 5/7:  Students will present their Culture Day projects.

April 23rd to April 27th


 



On Wednesday, April 25th there will be an early dismissal day.  Students will be dismissed at 11:00 a.m.  Please plan accordingly.

Arbor Day is Friday, April 27thArbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care.  A wonderful way to celebrate would be to plant a tree!

The Fifteenth Week of 2012 at School:
Science: We will begin the study of heat, light, and sound in chapter 14.

Social Studies:  We are continuing chapter 3 and will discuss new customs in lesson 2. Also, there will be a letter coming home discussing Culture Day.  Be on the look out for that on Wednesday.

Spelling: This week we will work on list 23.  Homework will be due and there will be a test on Friday, April 29th. 


Reading: During our poetry focus, we are discussing simile, hyperbole, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and personification.  There will be a vocabulary test on Monday, April 30th where students will need to define rhythm, rhyme, beat, line, stanza and pattern.  Students will receive a study guide on Monday, April 23rd. 

English: We will continue the study of unit 5 on capitalization and punctuation. Students will review commas in a series and using quotation marks.  We will also continue our friendly letter writing unit. On Monday, April 23rd students will have a friendly letter quiz. For the quiz students will need to edit a friendly letter.  On Friday, April 27th students will have a friendly letter test where they need to know the parts of a letter such as the heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature.  This week students will work on writing a pen pal letter to a second grade student at Elizabeth Ide.

Math: We will begin the study of multiplication of large numbers in chapter 23.  Look for a study guide to come home.  There will be a test in the week of April 30th.  We will have a division by 10 test on Friday, April 27th.

April 16th to April 20th



 
I enjoyed seeing everyone at Open House!  Thank you for coming!

Earth Day is on Sunday, April 22nd!  We will be celebrating Earth Day at Prairieview on Friday, April 20th.  Students can wear an Earth Day shirt or the color green!

The Fourteenth Week of 2012 at School:
Science: We will finish the study of chapter 10.  Students will be tested on chapter 10 on Thursday, April 19th. 

Social Studies:  We have completed our study of Chicago.  We will now begin studying chapter 3 titled People Move From Place to Place

Spelling: There will be a list 22 spelling test in cursive.  Homework should be done in cursive as well. The test will be on Friday, April 20th.   

Reading: Students will be quizzed on four new vocabulary words which they choose from their good-fit-books.  The vocabulary quiz has been moved to Wednesday, April 18th.  The quiz will be given in a verbal fashion which will truly test each student's understanding of the word they've chosen. For this test students will be asked to give the definition, an antonym/non-example, a synonym, and use the word in a sentence. This week we will also begin the study of poetry.

English: We will continue the study of unit 5 on capitalization and punctuation.  We will also begin a friendly letter writing unit.  Students will learn about the parts of a letter.  Then we will focus on editing friendly letters.  On Monday, April 23rd students will have a friendly letter quiz.  For the quiz students will need to edit a friendly letter. 

Math: We will finish the study of decimals in chapter 19.  There will be a test on Wednesday, April 18th.  Then we will begin the study of multiplication of large numbers in chapter 23.  We will have a division by 9 test on Friday, April 20th. 







Things to Remember: 
Wednesday 4/18: There will be a chapter 19 math test and a vocabulary quiz.
Thursday 4/19:
There will be a chapter 10 science test.
Friday 4/20: There will be a spelling test and a division test.  Students should wear green for Earth Day!


Monday 4/23:  There will be a friendly letter quiz.

April 9th to April 13th

Please join us for our spring Open House on Thursday, April 12th from 6:30 - 8:00.  Third grade's Open House theme is Chicago, so come wearing your favorite Chicago team's apparel!  There will also be a book fair and an ice cream social.  I look forward to seeing each of you!

The Thirteenth Week of 2012 at School:

Science: As we explore the planets in our solar system, students will be gathering information about each to display in a stand-up foldable project with a partner. One student will be responsible for the inner planets; the other, for the outer planets. Information on our solar system is in chapter 10: lesson 3. 

Social Studies: Our class has been "hired" by a local travel agency in need of Chicago brochures. Each student will be designing a brochure which will attract visitors to Chicago. They are using their packets and books to choose topics to include in their brochure. Each page of the brochure will include two topics. The topics should each have 2-4 details written in complete sentences. Pictures could either be drawn or printed off the Internet. Class time will be provided, however, students who don't choose to use their time wisely will end up taking this project home to be finished. Brochures are due on Thursday, April 12th.

Spelling: The focus on lesson 21 is the VCCV (vowel, consonant, consonant, vowel) pattern. The test will be given on Friday, 4/13 when all of the homework is due.  This test will be done in cursive. 

Reading: Students will be tested on four new vocabulary words which they are in the process of choosing from their good-fit-books on Tuesday, April 17th. The tests will be given in a verbal fashion which will truly test each student's understanding of the word they've chosen.  For this test students will be asked to give the definition, an antonym/non-example, a synonym, and use the word in a sentence. 

English: We are continuing Unit 5 on capitalization and punctuation this week, as well as, practicing our expository writing skills. The autobiographies we have been writing and editing will be up for Open House for you to enjoy. Your job is to decide which autobiography was written by your child.

Math:  We will study decimals in chapter 19.  Look for a study guide to come home.  There will be a chapter 19 test in the week of April 23rd. 

There will be a test on division by 8's on Friday, April 13th.

Thursday 4/12: Chicago brochures are due.  This is our spring Open House!
Friday 4/13: There will be a spelling and a division test.
Tuesday 4/17:  There will be a vocabulary test.
