January 8th to January 12th

Thank you so much for the very generous gifts! I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday! School will resume on Monday, January 8th




We had a fun filled week leading up to winter break. The class had a great time bowling at Brunswick Zone and enjoyed the movie, Wonder





They also came up with ways to make a Grinch Grin!



The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science: We will focus on social studies. Students will read Chapter 3, lesson 1 in our Social Studies textbook titled, Moving to a New Community. They will then read lesson 2 titled, Learning New Customs

Also, we will have an in-school field trip on Tuesday, January 9th that we like to call "Matter, Matters." Scientists from High Touch, High Tech will be coming in to review the states of matter while conducting experiments. 

Math:   When we return from break, students will  finish the study of unit 4, module 1 on place value and addition strategies. Then they will review regrouping with subtraction standard algorithm and will also learn other subtraction strategies in module 2. Students will also take a divide by 5 test on Wednesday, January 9th. 

Spelling:  Students will receive a new spelling list and should complete three activities using the new spelling menu.  The test will be on Friday, January 19th.  The activities will also be due on Friday, January 19th.  

ELA: Students will begin the week by writing a paragraph about their New Year's Resolution. We will continue our second unit on culture and traditions. Students will read about tooth traditions around the world when they read, Throw Your Tooth on the Roof. They will then write about their tradition when they lose a tooth. Next, we will read, What if You Had Animal Teeth? Students will decide which type of animal teeth they would choose and write a persuasive paragraph using text evidence about why the animal teeth they chose are the best! We will continue Daily 4 and learn more about verbs!

December Reading Logs will be due on Monday, January 8th.  A January reading log was sent home on Thursday.

Monday 1/8:  December Reading Logs are due.
Wednesday 1/10: There will be a divide by 5 test.  

Friday 1/19:  There will be a spelling test and 3 activities are due.

The class is looking forward to attending Wonder on Tuesday, December 19th. If you have not already, please send in your child's permission slip.

They are also excited to go bowling on Wednesday, December 20th.  

The Upcoming Week of School:
Social Science: We have completed all four mysteries in our unit, The World of Weather! A study guide came home today. Students should study their vocabulary page, four mystery assessments, along with the questions listed on the study guide. They will take The World of Weather test on Wednesday, December 20th.

Math: We will continue Unit 4, Module 1 on place value and rounding. Then we will move on to Unit 4, Module 2, which reviews subtraction across zeros while using various strategies. Students will also take a divide by 4 division test on Thursday, December 21st, since we will not have math on Wednesday. The division tests look very similar to the multiplication tests. Students will have two minutes to complete 26 problems and it will be worth 10 points. 

Spelling: Spelling will resume after winter break. We will not have spelling this week.

ELA:  Each student will write a narrative about one of their family's traditions. They will also read good fit articles and books during our Daily 4 stations. We will continue the study of verbs as well. 

Students should continue reading 20 min. each night and fill out their December reading logs. The December reading logs will be due when they get back from break on Monday, January 8th. I will give students their January reading logs before they leave for break.




Things to Remember:
Tuesday 12/19: We will go see Wonder.
Wednesday 12/20: Students will go bowling. There will be a science test.
Thursday 12/21: Students will take a divide by 4 test. 
Friday 12/22: Winter Break starts today.

The Upcoming Week of School:


Social Science: We have completed three mysteries in our unit, The World of Weather! This week students will complete mystery 4 titled, How can you keep a house from blowing away in a windstorm? Look for a study guide to come home this week. Students will take The World of Weather test in the week of December 18th.

Math:  Students will take their Unit 3 Test on Tuesday, December 12th. There study guide is due on Monday, December 11th. Then we will begin Unit 4, Module 1 on place value and rounding. Students will also take a divide by 3 division test on Wednesday, December 13th. ELA:  We will continue our second reading unit titled, Culture and Traditions. Students will take a vocabulary quiz on The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco. They received a list of vocabulary list today, 12/8/17. The quiz will be on Thursday, December 14th. The Keeping Quilt refers to many of Patricia Polacco's family traditions. Each student will write a narrative about one of their family's traditions. They will also read good fit articles and books during our Daily 4 stations. We will continue the study of verbs as well. 


Students should continue reading 20 min. each night and fill out their new December reading logs.

Tuesday 12/12: There will be a unit 3 math test.
Wednesday 12/13: There will be a divide by 3 test.

Thursday 12/14: There will be a vocabulary quiz.

Happy December! Please make sure students are bundled up for the weather, as we often go outside for recess.  

There will be an early dismissal day on Tuesday, December 5th at 11:00 a.m. Please plan accordingly!

The Upcoming Week at School:

Social Science: We have completed two mysteries in our unit, The World of Weather! This week students will complete mystery 3 titled, Why are some places always hot? 


Math:  Students will complete  a checkpoint this week on fractions and decimals. We will finish the study of Unit 3, Module 3 on decimals and Module 4 on fractions and decimals. Look for a study guide to come home. There will be a test in the week of December 11th. Students will also take a divide by 2 division test. The division tests look very similar to the multiplication tests. Students will have two minutes to complete 26 problems and it will be worth 10 points. 

Spelling: Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, December 8th. Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.  Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, December 8th. 


ELA:  This week students with perform a reader's theater on a myth working on fluency. They have been practicing and will perform their myth in front of the class on Tuesday, December 5th. Students can bring in props if they choose. It is optional. Then we will begin our second reading unit titled, Culture and Traditions. The first story students will read is The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco. It tells the story of a special family quilt that started in Russia and made its way to the United States in the early 20th century. They will also read good fit articles and books during our Daily 4 stations. We will start the study of verbs as well. 


Students should continue reading 20 min. each night and fill out their new December reading logs.
