Mrs. Burland's Bulletin
February 3rd - February 7th

On Thursday, February 13th we will celebrate Valentine's Day! If students choose to pass out Valentine's Day cards, they should get a card for everyone in the class.  There are 22 students in the class. If you are attaching a treat to the cards, please make sure there are not any nuts.

Congratulations to the third grade spelling bee winners, Hailey and Ethan! They will be competing against representatives from grades 3-8 on February 11th! Let's wish them luck!

The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Studies:  There will be a chapter 3 social studies test on Friday, February 7th. Students have received a study guide. They should use this guide, their graded reviews (in their social studies folder), and their textbooks to study. They should leave their textbooks at home until the date of the test. This way they do not need to carry them back and forth. 

In science, we will continue our Science curriculum, "Amplify" on inheritance and traits. 

Math: We will study angles in unit 5, module 1. Unit 5 focuses on Geometry & Measurement (Area and Perimeter).  We will have a divide by 6 timed test on Thursday, February 6th.  They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.  

Spelling:  Students will receive a new spelling list and should complete three activities using the spelling menu.  The test will be on Thursday, February 13th.  The activities will also be due on Thursday, February 13th.  

Reading: We will continue our unit on traditions, immigration, and culture. In addition, we will continue our Daily 4 stations and work on nonfiction text features and text structure.

ue on Monday, February 3rd. Students will receive a February reading log on Monday.

Things to Remember:
Monday 2/3:  January reading logs are due. 
Thursday 2/6:  There will be a divide by 6 test.  
Friday 2/7: There will be a chapter 3 social studies test.

Thursday 2/13: There will be spelling test and the 3 activities are due. There will be a divide by 7 test. We will celebrate Valentine's Day!

Happy Friday! We are having some crazy winter weather! Stay warm this weekend. Congratulations and good luck to Ethan and Kristian who will both represent our class in the grade level spelling bee on Monday. I am very proud of all my spellers! As we inch our way to February, please make sure you are checking your child's grades online frequently. We are halfway through the year already. It is hard to believe!

Students will be dismissed at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29th. Please plan accordingly. 

Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science:  We will continue our Science curriculum, "Amplify" on inheritance and traits. 

We will also continue our Social Studies unit on immigration. Students will read chapter 4, lesson 4 titled, A New Life in America.

Math:  We will finish unit 4, module 3 on measurement. Students received a study guide for Unit 4. There will be a Unit 4 test on Friday, January 31st. The study guide will be due on Thursday, January 30th. Students will have a divide by 5 timed test on Thursday, January 30th.  They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.   

ELA:   We will continue our unit on traditions.  In addition, we will continue our Daily 4 stations and work on nonfiction text features and text structure.

The January reading log will be due on Monday, February 3rd.

Friday 1/31: There will be a spelling test and the three activities are due. There will also be a unit 4 math test.

Monday 2/3: The January Reading Log is due.

January 20th to January 24th
 


Remember that on Monday, January 2oth there will not be school due to Martin Luther King's birthday. Please plan accordingly. Students have been learning about Martin Luther King this week through books and a movie! This afternoon, we started watching Our Friend Martin which discusses MLK's life in an understandable, relevant way. The students are enjoying the movie. We will finish it on Tuesday.


Today marks halfway through Trimester 2. I cannot believe how fast time is flying! It is a great time to check your child's grades. 

Spelling Bee:  We had a practice Spelling Bee in our classroom today, January 17th.  Our official class Spelling Bee will be on Wednesday, January 22nd. This year students will not be given a list to practice from.  They will use their prior knowledge to spell words. The winner and runner-up will compete against the winners in the other third grade classrooms on Monday, January 27th.

Students will have a divide by 4 timed test on Thursday, January 23rd.  They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.   

ELA:   We will also continue our unit on traditions.  In addition, we will continue our Daily 4 stations and work on nonfiction text features.

   January 13th to January 17th


Happy New Year! We have hit the ground running and are working in 2020. Please keep an eye on the assignment notebook. 

The Upcoming Week:

Social Science: We will continue our unit on inheritance and traits. We will also be diving into our Communities Social Studies textbook to begin our unit on culture and immigration. Here's how this unit plays out: We will read a lesson (there are 4), take notes, and then take an open book graded comprehension review. I will model how to find the answers using the book. 

Math:  We will finish unit 4 module 1 on various addition strategies. Then we will begin unit 4, module 2 on reviewing regrouping with subtraction standard algorithm and students will also learn other subtraction strategies. Students will take a divide by 3 test on Thursday, January 16th. They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems. 

Spelling:  Students should complete three activities using the spelling menu.  The test will be on Friday, January 17th.  The activities will also be due on Friday, January 17th.

ELA: This week students will practice identifying the main idea and details of nonfiction text. They will also learn about nonfiction text features and structures.

Students should continue reading 20 min. each night while filling out their January reading log.
