Week of May 28-31, 2019

We had fun at Brookfield Zoo.  We observed the animals and recorded what the animals were doing.  We will discuss our data in class.  My thanks to our chaperones: Mrs. Cameron, Mrs. Cigrand, Mrs. Rivera-Carrero, Mrs. Gajula, Mrs. Melie, Mrs. Plzak, and Mrs. Poynton.

ELA:  We will write an opinion paper on whether or not animals should be kept in the zoo.

We completed a Friendly Letter Writing unit.  Our 2nd grade pen pals will visit us on Friday.  

Remember to read for 20 minutes every day and record it in the May log.  The log is due on 5/31.  Continue reading over the summer.

SOCIAL SCIENCE: We will continue our Chicago presentations this week.
  
SPELLING: We had our final test on 5/24.

Mrs. Hlavacek's Math class:  Our Unit 7 test is on 5/31.  We will get a study guide on 5/28.  

Cursive Writing:  Workbooks must be completed by May 24.  When a student has successfully completed the cursive workbook, he/she may begin a typing program.

Please charge your Chromebook every night.

Week of May 13-17, 2019

Happy Mothers' Day to all our marvelous moms!
 
ELA:  We are reading the novel The One and Only Ivan. Students are completing a packet that addresses multiple reading skills. 
 
We will begin a unit on Friendly Letter Writing.  Students will be assigned a 2nd grade pen pal and write about all the exciting things we do at Prairieview.
 
Remember to read for 20 minutes every day and record it in the May log.
 
SOCIAL SCIENCE: We will prepare slide presentations about Chicago.
 
SPELLING:  New sorts go home on Monday.  Three activities on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on Friday, May 24, the day of the test.
 
MATH:  Mrs. Hlavacek's Math class:  We are working with equivalent fractions, as well as comparing fractions with unlike denominators. We have a checkpoint quiz on Tuesday.

Week of May 6-10, 2019

ELA  We are reading the novel The One and Only Ivan. Students are completing a packet that addresses multiple reading skills. 
 
SOCIAL SCIENCE We continue reading about Chicago. There is a test on
May 8. Students were given time to fill out the study guide in class. If they are not finished, it is due Tuesday. They will be able to use it for the test on Wednesday.

Remember to read for 20 days/20 minutes per night and record it in the May log.
 
SPELLING  New sorts went home on April 29. Three activities on the menu, 1 from each column, are due on Friday, May 10, the day of the test.
 
MATH  Mrs. Hlavacek's Math class: We completed Unit 6 and we are starting Unit 7.  We will be working with equivalent fractions, as well as comparing fractions with unlike denominators.  Also, we will review strategies for multi-digit multiplication in this unit.  The class was introduced to a math strategy game called "24".  Ask your child about it.

IMPORTANT DATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

As an enrichment to our English Language Arts Unit on Standing Up For What You Believe In, the third grade will be taking a field trip to Brookfield Zoo on Friday, May 24. We will be be leaving around 9 a.m. and returning by 2:15 p.m.
