Mrs. Burland's Bulletin
October 29th - November 2nd

I really enjoyed meeting with each of you for conferences.  It was so nice to sit down and talk with you about your child.  If you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.  

Downers Grove Field Trip: The class is looking forward to attending our Downers Grove field trip (11/19), which includes a tour of historical sites, the Downers Grove History Museum, and Giordano's pizza (optional). Field trip permission slips and pizza money is due on Monday, November 12th.

Halloween:
1. Our party will take place on Wednesday, October 31st. The room party will go from 1:00-1:50 p.m. Our Prairieview parade will begin at 1:55 p.m.

2. We only have 15 minutes for costume changes. Please make sure your child can change into his/her costume easily and by themselves. If the costume can be worn over their clothes, then both the time to change and the chances of losing any clothes is minimized.

3. If the costume involves make up, please apply it before your child comes to school. If you send your child in with make up, then your child has to be able to apply it themselves. 

4. Please do not send any weapons (guns, swords, etc.) as part of the costume. Save those for trick-or-treating.

5. We will not have time to change back into our clothes for dismissal. Your child will wear their costume home.

The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science: We will finish our study of the history of Downers Grove. Look for a study guide to come home next week. The History of Downers Grove Test will be on Tuesday, November 6th

Spelling:  Students were given their list of words along with a homework sheet with a list of activities. Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, November 2nd.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, November 2nd

ELA: We will finish our haunted house papers where students try to convince a movie producer to buy their haunted house. It is descriptive writing with a persuasive flare. The final draft is due on Wednesday, October 31st. Students were given a rubric/checklist to go over their writing.  

This week we will continue to work on identifying cause and effect with good fit articles during Daily 4. The October Reading Log will be due on Thursday, November 1st

Math: We will finish the study of unit 2 on multi-digit multiplication and early division. Look for a study guide to come home this week. There will be a test in the week of 11/5. Students will take their multiplication by 8 test on Tuesday, October 30th, if they have not taken it already. They will also take a multiplication by 10 test on Thursday, November 1st. Due to some students taking more than one multiplication test next week, we will save the multiplication by 9 test for another week. 



Things to Remember:
Friday 10/26: No School
Monday 10/29: There is no school due to a Teacher's Institute Day.
Tuesday 10/30: Students will take a multiplication by 8 test, if they have not done so already. 
Wednesday 10/31: The haunted house final draft is due. Happy Halloween! We will have our class party at 1:00 p.m. and the parade at 1:55 p.m.
Thursday 11/1: There will be a multiplication by 10 test. The October Reading Log is due.
Friday 11/2: There will be a spelling test and the 3 activities are due.

Fall Conferences are geared toward meeting with students' homeroom teacher.  I look forward to meeting with you on Monday (10/22), Tuesday (10/23), and Wednesday (10/24). Winter Conferences will be geared toward meeting with math teachers. 

There will not be school on Friday, October 26th. Please plan accordingly. 

The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science: We will continue our study of the History of Downers Grove. We will complete our study this week. Look for a study guide to come home. There will be a test in the week of 10/29. 

Spelling:  We will continue our Words Their Way program. Students will be given their list of words along with a homework sheet with a list of activities. Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Friday, November 2nd.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, November 2nd

ELA: We will continue our descriptive writing with a persuasive flare. The students are trying to convince a movie director to buy their haunted house! We will also work on identifying cause and effect with good fit articles during Daily 4. We will not have D.O.L. this week. 

Please make sure your child has their reading log completed by Thursday, November 1st

Math: We will continue the study of unit 2, module 3 on multiplication stories and strategies.  Then we will work on unit 2, module 4 on early division and remainders. They will take a multiplication by 8 test on Thursday, October 25th

ELA: Students will learn more about adjectives and similesThen we are going to  work on descriptive writing with a persuasive flare. The students will try to convince a movie director to buy their haunted house! We will also work on cause and effect with good fit articles during Daily 4. 

Math: We will finish the study of unit 2, module 2 on arrays and ratio tables.  Then we will begin unit 2, module 3 on multiplication stories and strategies. They will take a multiplication by 7 test on Thursday, October 18th Students will have two and a half minutes to complete 26 problems.   



Things to Remember:
Thursday 10/18: There will be a multiplication by 7 test.
Friday 10/19: The 3 spelling activities are due and there will be a spelling test.

October 8th - October 12th

Remember Monday, October 8th is Columbus Day and there will be no school.  Please plan accordingly.

Halloween: 

The Halloween party and parade will be on October 31st. Please keep in mind the following guidelines when helping your child pick out a Halloween costume:

1. We only have 15 minutes for costume changes. Please make sure your child can change into his/her costume easily and by themselves. If the costume can be worn over their clothes, then both the time to change and the chances of losing any clothes is minimized.

2. If the costume involves make up, please apply it before your child comes to school. If you send your child in with make up, then your child has to be able to apply it themselves. 

3. Please do not send any weapons (guns, swords, etc.) as part of the costume. Save those for trick-or-treating. Also, costumes should not include fake blood.

4. We will not have time to change back into our clothes for dismissal. Your child will wear their costume home.


We are halfway through the 1st trimester of third grade! Time sure flies! Feel free to check your child's grades online. If you are having problems doing so, please call the office.


There will be a soccer test in P.E. class on Thursday, October 11th. Students have already received a study guide. 

The Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science: We will begin the study of the history of Downers Grove.

Math: We will continue our study of unit 2 on multi-digit multiplication and early division. We will continue building multiplication arrays.  Students will also take a multiplication by 6 test on Thursday, October 11th They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.   

Spelling: We will continue our Words Their Way program.  Students will receive a new list of words along with a homework sheet with a list of activities on Tuesday.  Students should complete 3 activities and turn them in on Friday, October 19th.  One of the activities listed cannot be turned in.   Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Friday, October 19th.  

English Language Arts: This week we will be working descriptive language writing, character traits, and main idea/details. These are all important reading and writing skills. 
We will also continue our Daily 5 Program. There will also be a Daily Oral Language (D.O.L.) Quiz on Friday, October 12th. A study guide will come home on Tuesday, October 9th. 

Please make sure your child is reading! October logs are due by November 1st.

Things to Remember:
Monday 10/8: There is no school today due to Columbus Day!
Thursday 10/11:  There will be a multiplication by 6 test. There will be a soccer test in P.E. class. 
Friday 10/12: There will be a D.O.L. Quiz.
