April 3rd to April 7th

Have a wonderful Spring Break!  School will resume on Monday, April 3rd.

The week after Spring Break starts our PARCC testing. We will be testing Math the first week and ELA the following week. Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep, a healthy breakfast, and a good snack! Chromebooks need to be fully charged every night and ear phones should be brought to school daily! 

We had a great time at the Shedd Aquarium! Thank you to our parent volunteers!

The Thirtieth Week at School: 

Science: We will focus on social studies.

Social Studies: This week students will continue to study the Chicago Fire. They will write a story about the Chicago Fire from Cow O'Leary's point of view!

Math:  We will continue unit 6 on Multiplication & Division, Data, & Fractions.  We will begin Unit 6, module 3 which focuses on 
Line Plots, Fractions & Division.  Students will study the median, mode, and range of line plots.

Spelling: Students will receive a new spelling list. The 3 activities will be due on Thursday, April 13th. They will also have their spelling test on Thursday, April 13th. There is no school Friday, April 14th.

ELA: 
We will continue our third and final unit titled, Stand Up for What You Believe In! The students are really enjoying The One and Only Ivan! We will continue our Daily 5 program. The March reading log will be due on Monday, April 3rd.

Things to Remember: 
Monday 4/3: The March reading log is due.
Tuesday 4/4 - Friday 4/7: There is Math PARCC Testing.

March 20th to March 24th 

Happy Saint Patrick's Day! Did you know that the Irish Society of Boston organized the first parade in the colonies on March 17th, 1737?


On Friday, March 24th, the third grade will be visiting the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago! Students should bring a sack lunch that is completely disposable. They should also wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

Spirit Week:
Monday: Spring Training Day...wear your favorite baseball team shirt
Tuesday: Mismatched Socks Day...Wear your crazy, mismatched socks to symbolize that although we may look different on the outside, we are all the same on the inside. We are doing this on 3/21 in support of students with Down Syndrome because the chromosome that causes Down Syndrome is an extra, or 3rd, 21st chromosome. So show off your crazy socks, even wear them over your pants!
Wednesday: Hats/Shades Day
Thursday: Favorite T-Shirt Day
Friday: PV Spirit Day...Wear your PV school spirit wear or dress in GREEN AND YELLOW!

The Twenty-ninth Week at School:
Science: This week students will finish researching a planet with a partner. They will paint their planet and present their facts to the class. There will be a chapter 10 test on Tuesday, March 21st.

Social Studies: We will continue our study of Chicago! This week students will complete projects related to the Great Chicago Fire!

Math:  We will begin unit 6 on Multiplication & Division, Data, & Fractions.  We finished module 1, which  focused on multiplication and division strategies. Then we will begin unit 6, module 2 on revising area and perimeter.  Students will take a mixed division test on Thursday, March 23rd. There will be 40 problems with facts ranging from x0 to x9. Each problem will be worth a half point. There will not be retakes. Students will have 3 minutes to complete the test


ELA: We will work on our third and final unit titled, Stand Up for What You Believe In! We will start reading The One and Only Ivan this week! We will continue our Daily 5 program. This week, we will focus on the reading skill compare and contrast. Students will also finish writing their "How to Catch a Leprechaun" paper. I really enjoyed seeing all of the students leprechaun traps! They were very creative!

Spelling:  Students received a spelling list. The 3 activities will be due on Thursday, March 23rd.  There will also be a spelling test on Thursday, March 23rd due to the third grade field trip taking place on Friday.  

For trimester 3 each spelling activity will be worth one point instead of two. A greater emphasis of the third trimester ELA grade will be placed on reading comprehension and writing while still including points geared towards spelling.

Things to Remember: 
Tuesday 3/21: There will be a chapter 10 science test.
Thursday 3/23: There will be a mixed division test and spelling test. The three activities are due.

March 13th to March 17th

Spring pictures have gone home. If you haven't returned the pictures or payment already, please do so by Monday (3/13).


The Twenty-eighth Week at School:
Science: This week students will be in charge of researching a planet with a partner. Look for a study guide to come home. There will be a chapter 10 test on Tuesday, March 21st.

Social Studies: We will continue our study of Chicago! Students had the option of taking the first Chicago Quiz today (3/10) or on Monday, March 13th. Next, we will study waterways and the industrial boom.

Math:  We will begin unit 6 on Multiplication & Division, Data, & Fractions.  Unit 6, module 1 focuses on multiplication and division strategies.  Students will have a divide by 12 timed test on Thursday, March 16th.  They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.   

ELA: We will work on our third and final unit titled, Stand Up for What You Believe In! We will start reading The One and Only Ivan this week! We will continue our Daily 5 program. This week, we will focus on the reading skill compare and contrast. 

Leprechaun traps are due on Thursday, March 16th. Students should fill out the Leprechaun planning page in Google Classroom by March 16th as well. I look forward to seeing the students' traps!

March 6th to March 10th

Shedd Aquarium: We will be taking a field trip to the Shedd on FridayMarch 24th. If you haven't already, please send in the Shedd permission slip. Any parents who want to attend, please write a note on the bottom of the permission slip and send it in by Wednesday, March 8th. I will then pick 3 people's names out of a hat. Unfortunately, we are only able to have 3 chaperones. Thank you!!

Look for a letter that was sent home today about Leprechaun traps! Leprechaun traps are due on Thursday, March 16th. Students should fill out the Leprechaun planning page in Google Classroom by March 16th as well. I look forward to seeing the students' traps!

This week begins Trimester 3. An email will be sent out in a week or so when grades have been finalized.

The Twenty-seventh Week at School:
Science: We will continue the study of chapter 10 on space! We will finish lesson 2 on the moon and then we will begin lesson 3, which focuses on planets!

Social Studies: We will continue our study of Chicago! Students will learn about the founding of Chicago and about railroads. Look for a study guide to come home on Monday. Students will have the option to take the Chicago Quiz on Friday, March 10th or Monday, March 13th due to the spelling test being on Friday.


Math:  We will finish unit 5 on geometry and measurement. The unit 5 study guide is due on Wednesday, March 8th. The unit 5 test will be on Thursday, March 9th. Students will have a divide by 11 timed test on Thursday, March 9th.  They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.   


ELA: We will be focusing on our Chicago unit (cross curricular with Social Studies). We will also focus on comprehension skills using various literature passages. 

Leprechaun traps are due on Wednesday, March 16th. Students should fill out the Leprechaun planning page in Google Classroom by March 16th as well. I look forward to seeing the students' traps!

Spelling:  Students already received a spelling list and should complete three activities using the spelling menu.  The test will be on Friday, March 10th.  The activities will also be due on Friday, March 10th.

Things to Remember: 
Thursday 3/9: There will be a divide by 11 test and a unit 5 math test.
Friday 3/10: There will be a spelling test and the 3 activities are due. Students have the option to take the Chicago Quiz today or on Monday (3/13).
