September 30th - October 4th

Thank you so much for sending in apples for Johnny Appleseed's birthday!  Also, thank you to the parents who sent in extra supplies!  Below is a picture of the class wearing their apple glasses.  



  









The Sixth Week of 2013 at School:

Science: 
We will finish the study of chapter 4 on ecosystems.  There will be a chapter 4 test on Wednesday, October 2nd.   Then we will begin the study of chapter 9 on the water cycle.


Social Studies: This week the class will continue to learn about hemispheres.  Look for a study guide to come home.  There will be a hemisphere test on Monday, October 7th.  Then we will begin the study of Downers Grove history.  

Math: We will continue the study of chapter 2 on addition.  Students will work on adding large numbers, estimating, and problem solving.  There will be a chapter 2 test in the week of October 7th.  

Spelling: 
Monday:  List 6 pretest
               Homework:  entire class - cursive worksheet
Tuesday:     Homework:  entire class - ABC Order
Wednesday:  Homework:  Non-challenge – Write each word 3 times
              Challenge - Write sentences using spelling words
Friday:  List 6 final test

Reading:  The September reading logs are due on Monday, September 30th.  This week we will continue our Daily 5 program of guided reading groups, listen to reading, word work, work on writing, and read to self.  In addition students will work on the reading strategy of visualizing and summarizing while we listen to the story of Dogzilla.  Students will be given vocabulary words that go with this story.  There will be a vocabulary quiz on Thursday, October 3rd.  There will be a  Dogzilla comprehension check on Tuesday, October 8th.  

English: There will be an English unit 1 test on Monday, September 30th.  Then we will begin a descriptive/persuasive writing unit.

Monday 9/30: There will an English unit 1 test.  September reading logs are due.
Wednesday 10/2:  There will be a chapter 4 science test. 
Thursday 10/3:  There will be a vocabulary test.
Friday 10/4: There will be a spelling test.

September 23rd - September 27th

Thursday, September 26th is Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. We will be having a celebration! Please send your child with a peeled, cored, and sliced apple to school on Thursday, September 26th.  We will be making applesauce.  Thank you so much to the parents who donated items for Johnny Appleseed's birthday!!!


Friday, September 27th will be an early dismissal day.  Students will leave school at 11:00 a.m.  Please plan accordingly.

The Fifth Week of 2013 at School:

Science: This week we will continue the study of  ecosystems in chapter 4.  We will focus on how ecosystems can change in lesson 4.  Look for a study guide to come home this week.  There will be a chapter 4 test on Wednesday, October 2nd.

Social Studies: There will be a continent and ocean test on Tuesday, September 24.  This week students will be assigned a continent and will research facts about their continent.  


Math: This week we will begin chapter 2 on addition.  Students will learn different addition properties such as the commutative and associative property.  Students will also identify patterns and work on mental math strategies.  

Spelling: 

Monday:  List 5 (more short and long vowels) pretest
               Homework:  entire class - cursive worksheet
Tuesday:     Homework:  entire class - ABC Order
Wednesday:  Homework:  Non-challenge – Write each word 3 times
              Challenge - Write sentences using spelling words
Friday:  List 5 final test

Reading:  This week we will add a word work station to our Daily 5 program.  Students will work on dictionary skills and learn meanings of unfamiliar words.   Students will also be in guided reading groups, listening to reading, reading to self, and working on writing.    In addition students will work on the reading strategy sequencing.  They also will be shown how to write an extended reading response.  


English:  Students will learn how to identify the predicate in a sentence.  We will also work on correcting run-on sentences.  Look for a study guide to come home.  There will be an English unit 1 test on Monday, September 30th

September 16th - September 20th

Thursday, September 26th is Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. We will be having a celebration! Please send a peeled, cored, and sliced apple with your child on Thursday, September 26th to be used to make applesauce for the class. We are looking for donations of small bowls, plastic spoons, and apple juice. If this is something you are interested in helping with, please email me or send the items in any day before Thursday, September 26th. Thank you in advance for your help!


The Fourth Week of 2013 at School:

Science: We will learn about the different types of ecosystems such as desert, grassland, salt water, etc. in chapter 4, lesson 2.  


Social Studies: We will learn about the continents and oceans.  Ask your child to name all of the continents and oceans. 

Math: This week we will focus on rounding numbers and problem solving.  There will be a chapter 1 test on Friday, September 20th.  Students should review the concepts in chapter 1.     

On Monday, September 16th students will be tested on their basic math addition facts. Students will need to complete 40 addition problems in 2 minutes.  If students already passed the test, they will not need to take it again.  

Spelling: 

Monday: List 4 pretest
Homework for everyone:  Cursive worksheet

Tuesday's Homework for everyone:  ABC order

Wednesday's Homework:  
Nonchallenge:  Write each word 3 times
Challenge:  Spelling Sentences

Friday:  Final Test

Reading: This week we will introduce "Listening to Reading" into our Daily 5 program.  Students will listen to the story Lost and Found in our reading series.   Students will take a vocabulary quiz based on words from the story on Thursday, September 19th.  They will be given a study guide on Monday, September 16th.  There will also be a comprehension check on Friday, September 20th.  Students have the option to take home the story throughout the week to reread it.

English: We will continue the study of sentences in unit 1.  The focus will be on subjects and predicates this week.

Monday 9/16: 
 There will be an addition math facts test.
Thursday 9/19:  There will be a vocabulary quiz.  
Friday 9/20: There will be a Spelling "list #4" test.  There will also be a chapter 1 math test.

September 9th- September 13th
I really enjoyed seeing everyone at Curriculum Night!  

Please check your child's planner everyday this trimester.  I'm seeing a lot of signatures - thank you!

The Third Week of School:
Science:  We will be studying ecosystems in chapter 4.  

Social Studies: Students will continue to learn about cardinal and intermediate directions.  Students received a study guide on Friday, September 6th.  There will be a direction test on Thursday, September 12th.  Students will go on a direction scavenger hunt around the building to find a prize this week.  

Math: We will work on place value and problem solving in chapter 1.  
On Monday, September 16th students will be tested on their basic math addition facts. Students will need to complete 40 addition problems (adding numbers ranging from 1 to 10) in 2 minutes.  Students should be reviewing the addition math facts before the test.   We will take practice tests everyday leading up to the test.  If a student passes a practice test, they will not have to take the final test.  

Spelling: This week in spelling we will work on List 3. This list will focus on words with more short vowels.

Wednesday - Challenge: Spelling sentences 
                     Non-challenge: Write each word 3 times
Friday - Final test

Reading: Next week we will continue to teach the students how to utilize the essential reading strategies. In our classes we will demonstrate how the application of these strategies will maximize student comprehension of a range of literary materials.  Students will also work on their reading stamina for reading to self and reading to someone, which are both components of our Daily 5 reading program.  In your child's reading folder you will find a MAP testing sheet.  This includes your child's lexile number.  You can go to www.lexile.com and enter your child's lexile range to help find good fit books.  

English:  We will begin to study sentences in unit 1.  We did not have a chance to start unit 1 last week.  Students will be able to tell the difference between statements, questions, commands, and exclamation sentences. We will also be working on Daily Oral Language. Each day students will correct sentences from the board. This week students will be correcting end marks and capitalizing proper nouns.

Monday 9/9: There will be a spelling pretest.
Thursday 9/12:  There will be a direction test.
Friday 9/13: There will be a spelling test. 

Monday 9/16:  There will be an addition fact test.
