February 2nd to February 6th





On Thursday, February 12th we will celebrate Valentine's Day. If students choose to pass out Valentine's Day cards, they should get a card for everyone in the class.  There are 21 students in the class. 

Spring conferences are coming up the week of February 9.  These are by teacher request only.   I have 15 conferences already scheduled.   If you feel that you would really like to sit down with me and chat, please check out Sign up Genius.  If the spots are all taken, please know that I am always available via email or phone.  Have a great weekend!

The Twenty-second Week at School:
Science: We will continue the study of matter in chapter 11.  

Social Studies:  We will continue the study of chapter 3 on customs and immigration. Students did an excellent job on their Culture Day presentations!

Math:  We will continue the study of topic 7 on the meaning of division.  

Students have already started taking timed multiplication tests.  All students have passed their multiplication by 2's, 5's, and 10's test.  Some students still need to pass their multiplication by 3's test.  Other students have already passed their 3's test and are on 4's.  They have 3 minutes to complete 24 problems.  Students will have 5 days to pass each multiplication test which they  take daily.  If they pass in less than 5 days then they will move on to a new fact.  Students should be practicing their facts every night.  They will be tested on facts in the following order:

-3's
-4's
-6's
-7's
-8's
-9's
-11's
-12's

Spelling:  This week in spelling we will work on List 15.  There will be a pretest on Monday, February 2nd.  The final test will be on Friday, February 6th.

Reading: We will continue our unit on traditions.  We will work on various strategies with When Lightning Comes in a Jar by Patricia Polacco.  Students will have a vocabulary quiz on words from this story.  The vocabulary quiz will be on Thursday, February 5th.   In addition we will work in our Daily 5 stations on various reading strategies while reading good fit articles and/or books.  

English: Students will be writing in their journals about various topics.  We will also work on autobiographies.  


Things to Remember:
Thursday 2/5:  There will be a vocabulary quiz.  
Friday 2/6:  There will be a spelling test.

January 26th to January 30th

The Twenty-first Week at School:
Science: We will continue the study of matter in chapter 11.  

Social Studies:  We will continue the study of chapter 3 on customs and immigration. Culture Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 28th and Thursday, January 29th.  Each student should be prepared to share something about his or her cultural heritage with the class.  Please take a look at the Culture Day packet which was sent home on Wednesday, January 14th.   


Math:  We will finish the study of topic 6 on multiplication.  This chapter focuses on multiply by 3, 4, 6, 7, 8.  Students were given a study guide/practice test which will be due on Tuesday, January 27th.  The topic 6 test will be on Wednesday, January 28th.

January 19th to January 23rd

Remember that on Monday, January 19th there will not be school due to Martin Luther King's birthday.  Please plan accordingly.  

Six Flags’ Read to Succeed logs are due on Friday, January 3oth.

Spelling Bee:  We will have a Spelling Bee in our classroom on Friday, January 23rd.  You will find a list of spelling words that will be used for the spelling bee in your child's binder.  The winner and runner-up will compete against the winners in the other third grade classrooms on January 28th.  



We had the pleasure of having Mr. Arnold come to our class to discuss his job as a community leader and superintendent.  The students had the opportunity to ask him different questions about his job!  

Matter Presentation:  We are fortunate to invite scientists from "High Touch-High Tech to Prairieview.  They will lead students through many experiments involving the different states of matter on Friday, February 6th.  Please send in $7.50 for this presentation by Wednesday, January 21st.

They will be tested on vocabulary words from The Keeping Quilt on Thursday, January 22nd.  Then we will read When Lightning Comes in a Jar by Patricia Polacco and compare the two stories.  In addition we will compare and contrast good fit articles and/or books.  

English: Students will begin writing an autobiography.

January 12th to January 16th

Remember that on Monday, January 19th there will not be school due to Martin Luther King's birthday.    Also, there will be an early dismissal at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 16th.  Please plan accordingly.  

Due to the cold days our MAP testing has been pushed back.  Our class will take their reading MAP test on Tuesday, January 13th and their math MAP test on Thursday, January 15th.  Please talk to your child about trying their best! Also make sure they eat a good breakfast and get plenty of sleep.  Thank you!

Reading: We will continue our unit on traditions.  This week students will read The Keeping Quilt and discuss the traditions in the story. Students have already received a weekly words list.  They will be tested on the weekly words on Wednesday, January 14th.   

English: Students will begin writing an autobiography.


Things to Remember:
Tuesday 1/13:  Students will take the reading MAP test.  
Wednesday 1/14:  There will be a weekly words quiz and a prefix quiz.
Thursday 1/15:  Students will take the math MAP test.
Friday 1/16: It is an early dismissal day.
