May 2nd to May 6th

It was wonderful to see you at Open House!  It was so much fun watching the students show off their projects! Thank you for coming!

The Thirty-Fifth Week at School:
Science: We will finish the study of space in chapter 10. There will not be a chapter test. We will then begin the study of ecosystems in chapter 4. They will read and learn about the parts an an ecosystem, about different types of ecosystems and how they support plant and animal life.

Social Studies: We will focus on science.

Spelling:  Students will receive a new spelling list and 6 activities sheet. The 6 activities will be due on Friday, May 13th.  They will take their test on Friday, May 13th, as well. 


ELA:   We will be writing an opinion paper next week. We will also begin writing letters to our second grade pen pals! In addition, students will complete RAZ kids each day. During Daily 5, I will give each student a short quiz  after reading a good fit passage from RAZ kids. April Reading Logs are due on Monday, May 2nd. May Reading Logs went home today. Students will take the Reading MAP test on Friday, May 6thPlease make sure students get a good night sleep and eat breakfast!

Math:   We will finish the study of unit 6 on multiplication, division, data, and fractions. Look for a study guide to come home this week. There will be a unit 6 test on Monday, May 9th. Students will take the Math MAP test on Thursday, May 5th. Please make sure students get a good night sleep and eat breakfast!

 



Things to Remember: 
Monday 5/2:  April Reading Log is due.  
Wednesday 5/5: There will be the Math MAP test.
Friday 5/6: There will be the Reading MAP test.

Monday 5/9: There will be the unit 6 math test.

April 25th to April 29th




Please join us for our spring Open House on Thursday, April 28th from 6:30 - 8:00.  Third grade's Open House themes are space and Chicago, so come wearing your favorite Chicago team's apparel!  There will also be a book fair.  I look forward to seeing each of you! 

The Thirty-Fourth Week at School:
Science: Students will continue learning about space in chapter 10. They will present their space slides!

Social Studies: We will focus on science this week.

Math:  We will continue unit 6 on Multiplication & Division, Data, & Fractions.  We will continue unit 6, module 2 on revisiting area and perimeter. Then we will study unit 6, module 3 on Line Plots, Fractions, & Division. Some students need to retake their mixed division test. They will take the test on Monday, April 25th. Students
 will receive 3 minutes to complete 50 problems.

Spelling: Students already have their spelling list. The 6 activities will be due on Friday, April 29th. They will also have their spelling test on Friday, April 29th.

ELA: 
 Students will read good fit articles. We will work on finding the main idea and details. We will also continue our third unit titled, Stand Up for What You Believe In! We finished reading The One and Only Ivan! This week students will continue to find character traits along with text evidence.We will continue our Daily 5 program. Students now have a RAZ kids account. They are reading with their RAZ kids account during Daily 5, but can also use it for reading 20 minutes each night.

Thursday  4/28:  It is Open House! 
Friday  4/29: There will be a spelling test and homework is due.

April 18th to April 22nd



On Thursday, May 12th, the third grade will be visiting the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago! In the upcoming weeks we will begin an ecosystem unit. At the Shedd students will engage in a "Habitat Design Science Tech Trek," where they will digitally create their own animal habitat. They will also visit all the exhibits at the Shedd including the aquatic show! If you haven't done so already, please send in the signed permission slip along with $4.00. 

PARCC testing will continue this week. Please make sure your child gets a good night of sleep and eats a healthy breakfast.


Math PARCC Test Dates:

4/19, 4/20, 4/21 and 4/22

Friday, April 22nd is Earth Day! Students can wear brown, green, or blue to show their support for environmental protection!

Social Studies: The Chicago Test II will be on Monday, April 18th. Students should prepare using their study guide and their Chicago packet.

Math:  We will continue unit 6 on Multiplication & Division, Data, & Fractions.  We will continue unit 6, module 2 on revisiting area and perimeter. Students will also take the PARCC tests. 

Spelling: Students will receive  a new spelling list. The 6 activities will be due on Friday, April 15th. They will also have their spelling test on Friday, April 29th.

April 11th to April 15th



PARCC testing will begin on Tuesday, April 12th
Parents can play an important role in getting students ready for these tests. Here are suggestions on how parents can help their children prepare for the PARCC: 

1. Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep before the tests
2. Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast the days of the test
3. Let your child know that he or she should take the test seriously and do his or her best
4. Talk to your child about what to do while taking the test, including:
a. Paying attention to directions
b. Asking questions about directions if they are unclear
c. Reading each question carefully
d. Eliminating wrong answers right away, concentrating on remaining choices
e. Double checking answers


ELA PARCC Test Dates:
4/12, 4/14, and 4/15

Math PARCC Test Dates:
4/19, 4/20, 4/21 and 4/22

There will be an early dismissal on Wednesday, April 13th. Please plan accordingly. 

The Thirty-second Week at School:

Science: Students will begin learning about space in chapter 10. 

Social Studies: Students will continue to write a story about the Chicago Fire from Cow O'Leary's point of view! They will also learn about the Chicago World Fairs. Look for a study guide to come home for Chicago Test II. The Chicago Test II will be on Monday, April 18th.

Math:  We will continue unit 6 on Multiplication & Division, Data, & Fractions.  We will finish studying unit 6, module 1 which focuses on multiplication and division strategies.  Then we will begin unit 6, module 2 on revisiting area and perimeter. On Friday, April 15th students will take a mixed division test and will receive 3 minutes to complete 50 problems. I will passed out practice tests on Friday, April 8th.

Spelling: Students already received a spelling list. The 6 activities will be due on Friday, April 15th. They will also have their spelling test on Friday, April 15th.

ELA: 
We will continue our third unit titled, Stand Up for What You Believe In! The students are really enjoying The One and Only Ivan! We will continue our Daily 5 program. 

Things to Remember: 
Wednesday 4/13: Students will be dismissed early.
Friday 4/15: There will be a spelling test and the 6 activities are due. There will be a mixed division test.

Monday 4/18: Students will take Chicago Test II.
