September 29th - October 3rd

Thank you so much for sending in apples for Johnny Appleseed's birthday!  Also, thank you to the parents who sent in extra supplies!  Below are pictures of the class wearing their apple glasses.  




  









The Sixth Week of 2014 at School:
Science: 
We will finish the study of chapter 4 on ecosystems.  Students will learn about how living things survive in lesson 3 and how ecosystems change in lesson 4. 


Social Studies: There will be a continent and ocean test on Tuesday, September 30th.  Then we will begin the study of hemispheres.  

Math: Students took the topic 1 test on Friday, September 26th.  There was a lot of teacher support for the first test.  Some students opted to receive the guidance while other students went ahead on their own.  As the year progresses we will encourage independence.  We will begin the study of topic 2 on number sense.  Students will learn about the addition properties.  They will also learn mental math strategies.  

Spelling: This week in spelling we will work on List 6.  There will be a pretest on Monday, September 29th.  The final test will be on Friday, October 3rd.

Reading:  The September reading logs are due on Wednesday, October 1st.  We will continue to read The One and Only Ivan.  Students have been working on finding similes in the book.  They have also been writing similes that describe the main characters.  This week we will discuss metaphors and look for them while closely reading the text.  In addition, we will begin studying a word a day.  On Friday students will be tested on the four words we will have studied Monday-Thursday.   

English: We will continue a descriptive/persuasive writing unit.  

Things to Remember:
Tuesday 9/30: There will a continent and ocean test.
Wednesday 10/1:  September reading logs are due. 
Friday 10/3: There will be a spelling test and a vocabulary test.

September 22nd - September 26th

Friday, September 26th is Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. We will be having a celebration! Please send your child with a peeled, cored, and sliced apple to school on Friday, September 26th.  We will be making applesauce.  
We are looking for donations of small bowls, plastic spoons, and apple juice. If this is something you are interested in helping with, please email me or send the items in any day before Friday, September 26th. Thank you in advance for your help!

Thursday, September 25th will be an early dismissal day.  Students will leave school at 11:00 a.m.  Please plan accordingly.

The Fifth Week of 2014 at School:

Science: This week we will continue the study of  ecosystems in chapter 4.  We will focus on how living things survive in their ecosystem in lesson 3 and how ecosystems can change in lesson 4.

Social Studies: Students will research a continent this week and find interesting facts.  There will be a continent and ocean test in the week of September 29th.  Look for a study guide to come home.  


Math: We will finish studying chapter 1 this week.  On Friday, September 19th students were given a study guide and brought home their math textbook in order to help them prepare for the chapter 1 test which will be on Thursday, September 25th.  


Spelling: This week in spelling we will work on List 5. This list will focus on words with more short and long vowels.  There will be a pretest on Monday, September 22nd.  The final test will be on Friday, September 26th.
            
Reading:  We will continue to read The One and Only Ivan.  We will be close reading certain pages which means we will be digging a little deeper.

English:  Students were given a study guide and brought home their English textbooks.  There will be an English unit 1 test on Tuesday, September 23rd.  Then we will begin a descriptive writing unit.  


Things to Remember:
Tuesday 9/23: There will be an English unit 1 test.
Thursday 9/25:  There will be a chapter 1 math test.  
It is an early dismissal day.
Friday 9/26:   There will be a spelling test.  It's Johnny Appleseed's birthday celebration!

September 15th - September 19th

Friday, September 26th is Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. We will be having a celebration! Please send a peeled, cored, and sliced apple with your child on Friday, September 26th to be used to make applesauce for the class. The first set of intramurals will be offered to third graders during the month of October.  Information will come home on Monday.  Please look for the sheet.  The forms are due back by Friday. Any questions?  Please email Mrs. Cushing at tcushing@ccsd66.org.


The Fourth Week of 2014 at School:

Science: We will finish chapter 4: lesson 1.  Then students will learn about the different types of ecosystems such as desert, grassland, salt water, etc. in chapter 4, lesson 2.  


Social Studies: We will learn about the continents and oceans.  Ask your child to name all of the continents and oceans. 

Math: We HAVE our MATH CLASSES!  We will be working on unit 1: numeration.  


Spelling: This week in spelling we will work on List 4. This list will focus on words with vowel-consonant-e pattern.  There will be a pretest on Monday, September 15th.  The final test will be on Friday, September 19th.

Reading: This week we will begin The One and Only Ivan.  Students will work on closely reading the text.

English: We will continue the study of sentences in unit 1.  The focus will be on subjects and predicates this week.  Look for a study guide to go home.  There will be a test on unit 1 in the week of September 22nd.  

Things to Remember:
Saturday 9/13: It is Community Day!


Friday 9/19: There will be a Spelling "list #4" test.  

Friday 9/26: It's Johnny Appleseed's birthday celebration!

September 8th- September 12th
I really enjoyed seeing everyone at Curriculum Night!  I hope it was informative.  If you ever have a question or comment for me, please let me know!

We are truly getting into our 3rd grade curriculum and are starting quizzes and tests very soon. Watch the blog for news in each subject. 


A few reminders:  
Please sign your child's planner daily.

Please label all envelopes sent in with your child's name, their grade, what is in the envelope, and my name.

The Third Week of School:
Science:  We will be studying ecosystems in chapter 4.  

Social Studies: Students will continue to learn about cardinal and intermediate directions.  Study guides were handed out on Friday, September 5th.  There will be a short direction quiz on Thursday, September 11th.  Students will get a chance to go on a direction scavenger hunt around the building to find a prize this week.  

Math: We will begin switching for math on Wednesday.

Spelling: This week in spelling we will work on List 3. This list will focus on words with more short vowels.  There will be a pretest on Monday, September 8th.  The final test will be on Friday, September 12th.

Reading: This week we will work on finding the conflict and resolution in various stories.  Students will also work on their reading stamina for reading to self and reading to someone, which are both components of our Daily 5 reading program.  By the end of the week students will start to get to know Ivan, a mighty silverback gorilla.  He is the main character in our anchor text, The One and Only Ivan.  


English:  We will continue to study sentences in unit 1.   Students will review the difference between statements, questions, commands, and exclamation sentences.  They will apply this knowledge to their writing.

Things to Remember:
Monday 9/8: There will be a spelling pretest.
Thursday 9/11:  There will be a direction quiz.
Friday 9/12: There will be a spelling test.

September 1st - September 5th

I enjoyed meeting everyone at Open House!  I am looking forward to seeing each of you at Curriculum Night at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, September 3rd. At Curriculum Night you will be given information about the school year.

A few reminders:  
Please sign your child's planner daily.

Please label all envelopes sent in with your child's name, their grade, what is in the envelope, and my name.

The Second Week of 2014 at School:
Science: We will begin chapter 4 on ecosystems at the end of the week.  

Math:  I am excited to meet my math class next week!  This week in our homeroom class we will read the Math Curse and begin studying the 8 mathematical practices.

Social Studies: We will study directions. Students will learn about cardinal and intermediate directions.  

Spelling: This week, we will be taking a pretest on Lesson 2 on Tuesday.  Students will receive three spelling assignments.  They will be due on Friday, September 5th.  The final test is on Friday.  

Reading: I will start introducing/reviewing the reading strategies that we will be utilizing throughout the rest of the year using picture books.  Then students will use good fit books to practice using various strategies such as making connections, predicting, and inferring.  We will also work on our reading stamina.

English: We will begin to study sentences. Students will be able to tell the difference between statements, questions, commands, and exclamation sentences. 

Things to Remember:
Monday 9/1: It is Labor Day!  There is no school!
Wednesday 9/3:  It is Curriculum Night!
Friday 9/5: There will be a spelling "list 2" test.  Spelling homework is due.
