Miss Pellin's Post
March 1st to March 5th

There will be no school on Monday, March 1st. Enjoy Casimir Pulaski Day! Casimir Pulaski, known as the father of American Calvary, was recommended to George Washington by Ben Franklin while Ben was in France. Washington immediately put Pulaski in charge of the Revolutionary Armies Calvary. Pulaski's cavalry saved the day at the battle of Brandywine!

ISAT testing will begin on Tuesday, March 2nd. Here is some advice from Principal Schultz.
Parents can play an important role in getting students ready for these tests. Here are suggestions on how parents can help their children prepare for the ISAT:


1. Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep before the tests
2. Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast the days of the test
3. Let your child know that he or she should take the test seriously and do his or her best
4. Talk to your child about what to do while taking the test, including:
a. Paying attention to directions
b. Asking questions about directions if they are unclear
c. Reading each question carefully
d. Eliminating wrong answers right away, concentrating on remaining choices
e. Double checking answers



The Ninth Week of 2010 at School:


Science: We will continue our space unit! Students will learn about the inner and outer planets.

Social Studies: We will continue to study Egypt. Students will learn about the Cleopatra.

Spelling: We will not have Spelling this week. We will take the ISAT instead.

Reading: We will not have Reading this week. We will take the ISAT instead.

Enlish: We will not have English this week. We will take the ISAT instead.

Math: We will take a practice ISAT test. We will review everything we have learned this year. Also, students who did not pass the mixed multiplication test will retake the test each day until they have passed it beginning on Tuesday, March 2nd.

Things to Remember:

Monday 3/1: This is Casmir Pulaski Day. There will be no school.
Tuesday 3/2: There will be ISAT testing.
Wednesday 3/3: There will be ISAT testing.

Thursday 3/4: There will be ISAT testing.

Friday 3/5: There will be ISAT testing.

February 22nd to February 26th


Thursday, February 25, 2009 is Spring Picture Day - All students will be photographed. Please notify me (Miss Pellin) if you do not want an individual portrait taken of your child.

Look Before You Buy: Send no money now - View your portraits before you buy.Your finished portrait package will be sent home for review. Simply return any unused portrait sheets with your payment.
All students will be photographed. Please notify me if you do not want an individual portrait taken of your child. Additional Flyer will be sent home with your child on Tuesday, February 23, 2010. Please check their backpacks.

ISAT testing will begin on Tuesday, March 2nd. This week will be our final push for preparing for the ISATs. Please make sure each student is getting plenty of sleep, has a healthy snack, and is eating a healthy breakfast.


The Eighth Week of 2009 at School:
Home Room

Science: We will continue our space unit! Students will learn about the inner and outer planets.

Social Studies: We will continue to study Egypt. Students will learn about the Egyptain pyramids.


Language Arts
Spelling: There will not be Spelling this week. Instead we will focus on prefixes and suffixes.


Reading: Our class will be reading several stories and work on reading comprehension. Students will write extended responses when answering questions from the stories. When writing an extended response it is important to answer a question about the text using proof from the text and then to add your own insights.

English: Students will write an expository. The prompt this week will ask students "How can you stay healthy?" Students will also learn about prefixes and suffixes. Students will be quizzed on what they have learned on Friday, February 26th.


Math: In order to prepare for the ISAT tests, we will be bouncing around the textbook a bit more than usual. We have been and will continue to study area, perimeter, and volume. We will also work on t-charts and probability. The material that we are covering will be tested on the ISAT tests. Some of this material will also be tested in class, after the ISAT testing. Some of the material will not be tested with a formal classroom "chapter test."

Students will take a mixed mad minute multiplication test on Friday, February 26th. Students will take practice mixed multiplication tests each day leading up to the test. If a student passes (gets fewer than one wrong) before the final test day, then they pass the test and do not need to continue taking mixed multiplication tests. Students need to complete 40 problems in 5 minutes!


Things to Remember:
Friday 2/26: There will be a prefix/suffix quiz. There will be a mixed multiplication test.
Monday 3/1: This is Casmir Pulaski Day. There will be no school.

February 15th through February 19th





Remember that Monday, February 15th is Presidents' Day! There will be no school. Do you know the correct spelling of this holiday? Since Presidents Day is not the official name of the federal holiday, there is no one way to spell it. Both Presidents Day and Presidents' Day are common, and both are considered correct by dictionaries!

Thank you to all the parents who are helping with the Valentine's Day Party! The students are very excited and cannot wait for it!


The Seventh Week of 2010 at School:
Science: We will continue to learn about the sun and the solar system.

Students can use their new Science textbook online from the website http://www.thinkcentral.com/to help understand the subject. In order to access the Science textbook at home go to the same website. The user name is your parent connect number. The password is ccsd66.


Social Studies: We will continue to study the history and culture of ancient Egypt. We will have an Egypt vocabulary quiz on Friday, February 19th. Students made vocabulary cards to help them study for the quiz. The cards are in their Social Studies folder in their binder.

Math: We will study chapter 15. Chapter 15 continues the study of geometry. Students will take a mixed mad minute multiplication test on Friday, February 26th. Starting on Tuesday, February 16th students will take practice mixed multiplication tests each day leading up to the test. If a student passes (gets fewer than one wrong) before the final test day, then they pass the test and do not need to continue taking mixed multiplication tests. Students need to complete 40 problems in 5 minutes!

Reading: We will finish reading the story Ramona Quimby, Age 8. We will read several other stories and answer comprehension questions. Students will also work on answering extended response questions asked at the end of each story.

The month of February was spelled differently in ancient England.

February 8th through February 12th


Prairieview will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Friday, February 12th. Happy Valentine's Day! If students bring cards to share at school, they must have one for every student in the class. A class list was sent home on Friday, February 5th.

Remember that Monday, February 15th is President's Day. There will be no school.

The Sixth Week of 2010 at School:

Science: We will continue to learn about solar and lunar eclipses. We will also learn about the sun.

Social Studies: We will continue to study the history and culture of ancient Egypt.

Math: This week we will have a "x12" multiplication test on Friday, February 12th. Students should be studying their "x12" facts every night. We will begin studying chapter 15. Chapter 15 continues the study of geometry.

Reading: There will be a vocabulary test on Monday, February 12th. The class will continue to study inferencing. We will read the story Ramona Quimby, Age 8.

Friday 2/5: We will have a multiplication test and a spelling test. We will have a Valentine's Day party!
