Mrs. Burland's Post
January 21st to January 25th

Remember that on Monday, January 21st there will not be school due to Martin Luther King's birthday. Please plan accordingly.

Today marks halfway through Trimester 2. I cannot believe how fast time is flying! It is a great time to check your child's grades.

Our official class Spelling Bee will be on Wednesday, January 23rd. This year students will not be given a list to practice from.  They will use their prior knowledge to spell words. The winner and runner-up will compete against the winners in the other third grade classrooms on January 30th.

Upcoming Week at School:
Social Science:  We will continue our Science curriculum, "Amplify."

We will also be starting a new Social Studies unit on immigration. There will be open book/graded reviews involved. The first one will be after lesson 1 this week. This is a cross-curricular unit that lends itself nicely to our reading block.

Math:  :  We will finish unit 4, module 2 on subtraction strategies and students will take a subtraction checkpoint.  I attached pictures of posters that feature the addition and subtraction strategies that students have been learning in the Math Google Classroom. Then we will begin unit 4, module 3 on measurement. Students will have a divide by 4 timed test on Thursday, January 24th.  They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.

ELA:  This past week, we read the story Matchbox Diaries about an immigrant who could not write, so he kept a diary by placing important items in matchboxes. Students will think about items that represent an important event in their life and we will journal about it. We will also continue our unit on traditions.  In addition, we will continue our Daily 4 stations and work on nonfiction text features.

The January reading log will be due on Friday, February 1st.

Spelling:  Students will receive a new spelling list and should complete three activities using the spelling menu.  The test will be on Friday, February 1st.  The activities will also be due on Friday, February 1st.
