 Mrs. Burland's Bulletin
November 13th- November 21st

Happy Veterans Day! Today we had a wonderful assembly where students and staff had the chance to honor our veterans! I want to thank Brady's grandpa, Madison's grandpa, and Joseph's uncle for serving our country and being a part of our assembly!

The end of the first trimester will be on Friday, November 17th.

We will not have school on Wednesday, November 22ndThursday, November 23rd, and Friday, November 24th due to Thanksgiving! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

The Upcoming Week at School:

Social Science: The students have been loving Mystery Science unit 1 titled, The Power of Flowers. We have completed Mystery 1 on Flowering and Reproduction (Why do plants grow flowers?) and Mystery 2 on reproduction (Why do plants give us fruit?). For each mystery students complete an activity. In the pictures below students are studying fruits and vegetables and are deciding whether each item is a scientific fruit or a scientific vegetable. Many students were surprised to find out that eggplant is a scientific fruit.

Math:
We will finish unit 3, module 1 on mixed numbers and equivalent fractions.  Then we will begin unit 3, module 2 on comparing, composing, and decomposing fractions and mixed numbers. Students will complete a checkpoint on equivalent fractions. Students will also take a multiplication by 12 test on Wednesday, November 15th

Spelling: Students should complete 3 activities from their homework sheet and turn them in on Tuesday, November 21st, which is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break.  Some of activities listed cannot be turned in.  Please initial next to the activity name so that I know the activity was completed if needed.  The spelling test will also be on Tuesday, November 21st.

ELA:  We will continue the study of myths while looking at the plot elements: exposition, conflict, rising actions, climax, falling actions, and resolution. We will also study nouns and adjectives.

Next week, we will also be working on a writing project pertaining to Thanksgiving.  Today you will see a bare turkey coming home.  Students need to "disguise" him so the farmer lets him go!  Students should bring back their disguised turkeys on Wednesday, November 15th.  It is not necessary to buy any crafty items, just use what you have at home.  I've seen feathers, beads, googly eyes, cloth, construction paper, and just plain old crayons used.  We will complete the writing portion of this project in class.

Things to Remember:
Wednesday 11/15:  Turkey disguises are due.  There will be a multiplication by 12 test.

Tuesday 11/21:
The 3 spelling activities are due and there will be a spelling test.
Wednesday 11/22: No School
Thursday 11/23: Happy Thanksgiving!
Friday 11/24: No School
