Miss Pellin's Post
January 4th to January 9th

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday! School will resume on Tuesday, January 3rd

We had a fun filled week leading up to winter break. The class had a great time bowling at Brunswick Zone and enjoyed the play, "A Christmas Carol."

The Eighteenth Week at School:
Science: We will begin the study of matter in chapter 11.  We will focus on chapter 11, lesson 1 titled, "What is Matter?" Students will learn about the physical properties of matter and different ways to measure matter.

Social Studies: We will focus on science.

Math:    On the Friday before break, students learned about binary coding. Ask your child what they learned! When we return from break, students will begin unit 4, module 1 on place value and the standard addition algorithm. Students will review rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand. They will also begin division timed tests.  They will start with a divide by 2 timed test on Thursday, January 5th.  These tests will be very similar to the multiplication tests.  Students will have two minutes to complete 26 problems. Students who pass on Thursday, January 5th will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.

Spelling:  Students will receive a new spelling list and should complete three activities using the new spelling menu.  The test will be on Friday, January 13th.  The activities will also be due on Friday, January 13th.

ELA: We will continue our unit on traditions.  This week students will read The Keeping Quilt and discuss the traditions in the story.  They will also be reading good fit books in their literature circles.  December Reading Logs will be due on Tuesday, January 3rd.  A January reading log was sent home on Friday.  In addition, students will also write about their New Year's resolution.

Things to Remember:
Tuesday 1/3:  December Reading Logs are due.
Tuesday 1/5: There will be a divide by 2 test.

Friday 1/13:  There will be a spelling test and 3 activities are due.
