Miss Pellin's Post
January 17th to January 21st

Remember that Monday, January 17th is Martin Luther King's Birthday. There will be no school, please plan accordingly.

Our two class winners of the Spelling Bee will compete in the 3rd grade Spelling Bee on Wednesday, January 19  against the other third grade class winners. Good luck Melanie and Saahil!

The Third Week of 2011 at School:
Science: We will continue the study of matter. Students will learn about chemical and physical changes.

Social Studies: We will finish our study of immigrants this week. We will focus on how immigrants adjusted to American life.  We will be celebrating Culture Day on Thursday, January 27th and Friday, January 28th. Each student should be prepared to share something about his or her cultural heritage with the class.  Please take a look at the Culture Day packet that was sent home with your child.  Also, please note that students will not be able to bring in any food items.  They may use pictures of food instead.

Math: We will continue the study of measurement (Chapter 20 and 21). There will be a test on measurements on Friday, January 21st. Students will not have to memorize conversions such as 1 kilogram = 1000 grams. Rather there will posters hanging up. Students will receive a study guide on Tuesday, January 18th.  We are going to go out of order and have a multiplication "x10" test on Friday, January 21st.

Spelling: We are back to our normal spelling routine next week with Lesson #13. We will pre-test on Tuesday and assign the corresponding homework. The spelling challenge students will only have to pick two assignments from the list and all other spelling students will have a shortened assignment as well due to the 4 day week. The homework will be due on Friday and we will have the test that day also!

Reading: This week we will be targeting the reading strategy of questioning while reading various books in class.  As always, we will also continue to review and refine our work with the other strategies that we have already introduced, but will highlight questioning this week.

English: We will continue the study of verbs.
Things to Remember:
