Miss Pellin's Post
March 20th to March 24th

Happy Saint Patrick's Day! Did you know that the Irish Society of Boston organized the first parade in the colonies on March 17th, 1737?

On Friday, March 24th, the third grade will be visiting the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago! Students should bring a sack lunch that is completely disposable. They should also wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

Spirit Week:
Monday: Spring Training Day...wear your favorite baseball team shirt
Tuesday: Mismatched Socks Day...Wear your crazy, mismatched socks to symbolize that although we may look different on the outside, we are all the same on the inside. We are doing this on 3/21 in support of students with Down Syndrome because the chromosome that causes Down Syndrome is an extra, or 3rd, 21st chromosome. So show off your crazy socks, even wear them over your pants!
Wednesday: Hats/Shades Day
Thursday: Favorite T-Shirt Day
Friday: PV Spirit Day...Wear your PV school spirit wear or dress in GREEN AND YELLOW!

The Twenty-ninth Week at School:
Science: This week students will finish researching a planet with a partner. They will paint their planet and present their facts to the class. There will be a chapter 10 test on Tuesday, March 21st.

Social Studies: We will continue our study of Chicago! This week students will complete projects related to the Great Chicago Fire!

Math:  We will begin unit 6 on Multiplication & Division, Data, & Fractions.  We finished module 1, which  focused on multiplication and division strategies. Then we will begin unit 6, module 2 on revising area and perimeter.  Students will take a mixed division test on Thursday, March 23rd. There will be 40 problems with facts ranging from x0 to x9. Each problem will be worth a half point. There will not be retakes. Students will have 3 minutes to complete the test

ELA: We will work on our third and final unit titled, Stand Up for What You Believe In! We will start reading The One and Only Ivan this week! We will continue our Daily 5 program. This week, we will focus on the reading skill compare and contrast. Students will also finish writing their "How to Catch a Leprechaun" paper. I really enjoyed seeing all of the students leprechaun traps! They were very creative!

Spelling:  Students received a spelling list. The 3 activities will be due on Thursday, March 23rd.  There will also be a spelling test on Thursday, March 23rd due to the third grade field trip taking place on Friday.

For trimester 3 each spelling activity will be worth one point instead of two. A greater emphasis of the third trimester ELA grade will be placed on reading comprehension and writing while still including points geared towards spelling.

Things to Remember:
Tuesday 3/21: There will be a chapter 10 science test.
Thursday 3/23: There will be a mixed division test and spelling test. The three activities are due.
