The district spelling bee will be held on Friday, February 8th. Keep practicing the words that were handed out and you might be a champion!

Remember to wear a shirt from your favorite vacation spot or state on Friday, January 25th. On Friday, February 1st remember to where a shirt depicting your favorite pro football team (in honor of the Super Bowl).

The Fourth Week of 2008 at School:

English: We will continue to work on letter writing. This will include the structure of the letter and its special punctuation. We are also learning how to address envelopes. We will have a test on verbs on Wednesday, January 30th. You can prepare for the test by completing the verb review/study guide that is due on Monday, January 28th.

Spelling: This week will be a Spelling review week. Words will be drawn from List #9 up through List #16. The test will be on Friday, February 1st. This will be in the same format as the last review over Lists #1-7.

Reading: We will continue to read the story Lost and Found. We will work on summarizing, sequencing, and comprehension. We will also be reading True Animal Heroes. Again students will be asked to summarize what they have read.

Math: We will continue multiplication. This week’s mad minutes will focus on 7’s. Please help your child practice these multiplication facts throughout the week. Try using flash cards (make sure you mix them up to vary the order). We will begin to study the mathematics of measurement in Chapter 4. This week we will concentrate on rulers. This includes fractional units such as 1/2, 1/4, and 3/4 of an inch. We will also practice conversions from English units to Metric units and back again.

Social Studies: We will continue studying the traditions and cultures of people around the world (Chapter 3). We will be working on Lessons 4. Culture Day will be Friday, February 1st. Each student should be prepared to share with the class something about his or her cultural heritage. You can find a packet on what to do in each students binder. The Chapter 3 test will be on Monday, February 4th.

Science: We will continue our unit on the study of animals. In the unit, we will learn how to classify animals based on their traits and needs. Mammals will be our key group this week.
