January 18th to January 22nd

Remember that on Monday, January 18th there will not be school due to Martin Luther King's birthday.  Please plan accordingly.  

Six Flags’ Read to Succeed logs are due on Monday, February 1st.

Spelling Bee:  We will have a Spelling Bee in our classroom on Thursday, January 22nd.  This year students will not be given a list to practice from.  They will use their prior knowledge to spell words. The winner and runner-up will compete against the winners in the other third grade classrooms on January 27th.  

Matter Presentation:  We are fortunate to invite scientists from "High Touch-High Tech to Prairieview.  They will lead students through many experiments involving the different states of matter on Friday, January 29th.  Please send in $7.50 for this presentation by Friday, January 22nd.

The Twenty-first Week at School:

Science: We will continue the study of matter in chapter 11, lesson 2.  We will discuss states of matter.  

Social Studies:  This week we will focus on science.  

Math:  We will continue unit 4, module 1 on place value and the standard addition algorithm.  Students will have a divide by 3 timed test on Tuesday, January 19th.  They will have two and a half minutes to complete 26 problems.   Students who pass on Tuesday, January 19th will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.  

Spelling:  Students will receive a new spelling list and should complete six activities using the spelling menu.  The test will be on Friday, January 29th.  The activities will also be due on Friday, January 29th.  

ELA: We will continue our unit on traditions.  This week  we will read When Lightning Comes in a Jar and compare it with The Keeping Quilt which is also by Patricia Polacco.  In addition we will compare and contrast good fit articles and/or books during Daily 5 stations.  

We are reading mystery novels this month.  Rather than an Independent Reading Contract, students are required to complete a book report.  The book report packet is due on Friday, January 22nd.  Students will have all week to work on it during Daily 5.
