Miss Pellin's Post
February 1st to February 5th



The students took matter into their own hands when the scientists from High Tough High Tech visited our class today. In a program called Matter Matters©, the scientists helped the students discover all states of matter including gas, liquid, solid, and even plasma. In the pictures above students watched the transformation of solid to gas happen right before the students' eyes - sublimation! 

On Thursday, February 11th we will celebrate Valentine's Day. If students choose to pass out Valentine's Day cards, they should get a card for everyone in the class.  There are 19 students in the class. 

The Twenty-third Week at School:
Science: We will finish the study of matter in chapter 11.  There will be a chapter 11 test on Friday, February 5th. Students can keep their science textbook at home until the day of the test.

Social Studies:  We will focus on science.

Math:   We will begin unit 4, module 3 on measurement.  Students will have a divide by 5 timed test on Tuesday, February 2nd.  They will have two and a half minutes to complete 26 problems.   Students who pass on Tuesday, January 2nd will receive the full amount of points (13/13).  If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass.  Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.  

Spelling:  Students will receive a new spelling list and should complete six activities using the spelling menu.  The test will be on Thursday, February 11th.  The activities will also be due on Thursday, February 11th.  

Reading: We will continue our unit on traditions.  Students will write a personal narrative on a tradition.  Also, students will receive a third grade pen pal from the Dubai American Academy.  Miss Wyse is currently teaching at the Dubai American Academy. This week students will write their first letter to their pen pal and will share the letter through a google document.  In addition, we will work in our Daily 5 stations on various reading strategies while reading good fit articles and/or books.  During our read to self station, students will read a good fit fiction book of their choice and complete a book report similar to the mystery good report.  

January Reading Logs are due on Monday, February 1st.

Monday 2/1:  January Reading Logs are due.
Tuesday 2/2:  There will be a divide by 5 test.  
Friday 2/5:  There will be a chapter 11 science test.
