January 11th to January 15th

Remember that on Monday, January 18th there will not be school due to Martin Luther King's birthday. Also, there will be an early dismissal at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 15th. Please plan accordingly.
Third grade students will take their reading MAP test on Tuesday, January 12th and their math MAP test on Wednesday, January 13th. Please talk to your child about trying their best! Also make sure they eat a good breakfast and get plenty of sleep. Thank you!
Matter Presentation: We are fortunate to invite scientists from "High Touch-High Tech" to Prairieview. They will lead students through many experiments involving the different states of matter on Friday, Janurary 29th! The cost for each child is $7.50. Please send in $7.50 with your child by January 22nd.
Six Flags’ Read to Succeed logs are due on Friday, January 29th.
Science: We will continue the study of matter in chapter 11. Students will be completing a project related to physical properties of matter. Today, students learned that anything you can observe about matter by using one or more of your senses is a physical property. Students should bring in 5 small items representing sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. I sent home a sheet explaining the project further.
Social Studies: We will focus on science this week.
Math: There will be a unit 3 test on Monday, January 11th. Then we will begin unit 4, module 1 on place value and the standard addition algorithm. We will also begin division timed tests. We will start with a divide by 2 timed test on Tuesday, January 12th. These tests will be very similar to the multiplication tests. They will have two and a half minutes to complete 26 problems. Students who pass on Tuesday, January 5th will receive the full amount of points (13/13). If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass. Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.
Spelling: Students have already received a spelling list and should complete six activities using the new spelling menu. The test will be on Friday, January 15th. The activities will also be due on Friday, January 15th.
We are reading mystery novels this month. Rather than an Independent Reading Contract, students are required to complete a book report. These will mostly be done in class during our daily 5 stations.
