September 14th - September 18th
Saturday, September 26th is Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. We will be having a celebration! Please send a peeled, cored, and sliced apple with your child on Friday, September 25th to be used to make applesauce for the class. We are looking for donations of small bowls, plastic spoons, and apple juice. If this is something you are interested in helping with, please email me or send the items in any day before Friday, September 25th. Thank you in advance for your help!
The Fourth Week of School:
Science: We will focus on social studies this week.
Social Studies: We will continue learning about the continents and oceans. Students will research facts about different continents. There will be a continent and ocean test on Friday, September 18th. Look for a study guide to come home on Monday, September 14th.
Math: We will continue our study of Module 1 which focuses on multiplication and division. Students will begin to take timed multiplication tests. We will begin with multiplication by 2. They will have two and a half minutes to complete 26 problems. The first test will be on Tuesday, September 15th. Students who pass on Tuesday, September 15th will receive the full amount of points (13/13). If students don't pass the test on the first day, they will take the test the next day and receive 12/13 if they pass. Students will continue taking the test each day until they pass and one point will be taken off each day.
English Language Arts: This week we will continue our first unit of study, Tales as Old as Time. This unit of study includes folktales, fairy tales, myths, legends, tall tales, and fables. This week I will model identifying character traits in the story The Mysterious Giant of Barletta. When finding character traits, students need to find evidence to support the chosen character trait. Students will apply this strategy to their good fit books. The class will also be studying simple versus compound sentences.
Things to Remember:
Tuesday 9/15: There will be a multiplication by 2 test.
Friday 9/18: There will be a continent and ocean test.
