October 14th - October 18th

Remember Monday, October 14th is Columbus Day and there will be no school.  Please plan accordingly.

Halloween: 

The Halloween party and parade will be on October 31st. Please keep in mind the following guidelines when helping your child pick out a Halloween costume:

1. We only have 15 minutes for costume changes. Please make sure your child can change into his/her costume easily and by themselves. If the costume can be worn over their clothes, then both the time to change and the chances of losing any clothes is minimized.

2. If the costume involves make up, please apply it before your child comes to school. If you send your child in with make up, then your child has to be able to apply it themselves. 

3. Please do not send any weapons (guns, swords, etc.) as part of the costume. Save those for trick-or-treating. Also, costumes should not include fake blood.

4. We will not have time to change back into our clothes for dismissal. Your child will wear their costume home.

The Upcoming Week at School:

Social Science: We will continue the study of the history of Downers Grove. Students should keep their History of Downers Grove packet in their social science folder. 

Math: We will continue our study of unit 2 on multi-digit multiplication and early division. We will continue building multiplication arrays.  Students will also take a multiplication by 6 test on Thursday, October 17th.  They will have two minutes to complete 26 problems.   

Spelling: We will continue our Words Their Way program.  Students will receive a new list of words on Tuesday.  Students will choose 3 activities, one from each column, on the Spelling Homework Menu. This will help them master their spelling words. All 3 activities should be stapled to the Spelling Homework Menu and the square initialed by a parent. It should be turned in by Friday, October 25th, which is the day of the test. The test will include 15 words from the student's list (teacher's choice) and 2 sentences, using any of their 2 words.

English Language Arts: This week we will be working descriptive language writing and identifying story elements when reading. These are all important reading and writing skills. We will also continue our Daily 5 Program. There will also be a Daily Oral Language (D.O.L.) Quiz on Friday, October 18th. A study guide will come home on Tuesday, October 15th. 

Please make sure your child is reading! October logs are due by November 1st.

Things to Remember:
Monday 10/14: There is no school today due to Columbus Day!
Thursday 10/17:  There will be a multiplication by 6 test. 

Friday 10/18: There will be a D.O.L. Quiz.
