Miss Pellin's Post
September 29th - October 3rd

Thank you so much for sending in apples for Johnny Appleseed's birthday!  Also, thank you to the parents who sent in extra supplies!  Below are pictures of the class wearing their apple glasses.

The Sixth Week of 2014 at School:
Science:
We will finish the study of chapter 4 on ecosystems.  Students will learn about how living things survive in lesson 3 and how ecosystems change in lesson 4.

Social Studies: There will be a continent and ocean test on Tuesday, September 30th.  Then we will begin the study of hemispheres.

Math: Students took the topic 1 test on Friday, September 26th.  There was a lot of teacher support for the first test.  Some students opted to receive the guidance while other students went ahead on their own.  As the year progresses we will encourage independence.  We will begin the study of topic 2 on number sense.  Students will learn about the addition properties.  They will also learn mental math strategies.

Spelling: This week in spelling we will work on List 6.  There will be a pretest on Monday, September 29th.  The final test will be on Friday, October 3rd.

Reading:  The September reading logs are due on Wednesday, October 1st.  We will continue to read The One and Only Ivan.  Students have been working on finding similes in the book.  They have also been writing similes that describe the main characters.  This week we will discuss metaphors and look for them while closely reading the text.  In addition, we will begin studying a word a day.  On Friday students will be tested on the four words we will have studied Monday-Thursday.

English: We will continue a descriptive/persuasive writing unit.
