October 8th - October 12th

Remember Monday, October 8th is Columbus Day and there will be no school. Please plan accordingly.
Halloween:
The Halloween parade and party will be on Wednesday, October 31st.
Please keep in mind the following guidelines when helping your child pick out a Halloween costume:
1. We only have 15 minutes for costume changes. Please make sure your child can change into his/her costume easily and by themselves. If the costume can be worn over their clothes, then both the time to change and the chances of losing any clothes is minimized.
2. If the costume involves make up, please apply it before your child comes to school. If you send your child in with make up, then your child has to be able to apply it themselves.
3. Please do not send any weapons (guns, swords, etc.) as part of the costume. Save those for trick-or-treating.
4. We will not have time to change back into our clothes for dismissal. Your child will wear their costume home.
The Seventh Week of 2012 at School:
Science: We will review chapter 9 on the water cycle. There will be a test Thursday, October 11th.
Social Studies: This week we will study continents and oceans. Look for a study guide to come home. There will be a test in the week of October 15th.
Spelling: Due to the shortened week, there are only two homework assignments.
Tuesday:
Cursive worksheet for all students
Wednesday:
Non Challenge: ABC Order
Challenge: 1 Challenge Activity
Reading: Our continued focus will be on inferring this week as we practice using many reading strategies to improve our reading. The inferences we make will be about text, characters and unfamiliar words. There will be a Mulan comprehension check on Wednesday, October 10th. Students may take home their book home in order to reread the story Tuesday night before the comprehension check.
English: Students will present their "Me" bags (Three Favorite Things) on Wednesday or Thursday of next week. They have written in their planner which day they are scheduled. Also, the final draft of their Three Favorite Things paper is due on Wednesday. Many students finished this in class. Please have them practice their presentations over the weekend. I have provided the class with the rubric I will be using to grade them.
Math: There will be a chapter 3 test on Wednesday, October 10th. Then we will begin the study of chapter 4 on subtracting large numbers, rounding, and word problems.
