October 29th to November 2nd
Halloween: The Halloween parade will be at at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31st. Then we will have our classroom party at 1:30 p.m.
Please keep in mind the following guidelines when helping your child pick out a Halloween costume:
1. We only have 15 minutes for costume changes. Please make sure your child can change into his/her costume easily and by themselves. If the costume can be worn over their clothes, then both the time to change and the chances of losing any clothes is minimized.
2. If the costume involves make up, please apply it before your child comes to school. If you send your child in with make up, then your child has to be able to apply it themselves.
3. Please do not send any weapons (guns, swords, etc.) as part of the costume. Save those for trick-or-treating.
4. We will not have time to change back into our clothes for dismissal. Your child will wear their costume home.
Conferences: I look forward to meeting with each of you on Monday, October 29th and Tuesday, October 30th for conferences!
The Tenth Week of 2012 at School:
Science: We will continue the study of chapter 4 on ecosystems.
Social Studies: We will have a hemisphere test on Tuesday, October 30th. Then we will begin the study of the history of Downers Grove.
Math: This week we will begin the study of chapter 5 on money and time. Students will be asked to bring in quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. Five of each coin should be enough. They will not spend the money. It will be used for instruction and will be returned when we finish the unit.
Spelling: This week we will work on Halloween words. There will be a homework packet given to the students on Monday. The homework packet is due Friday. There will be no pretest or final test on the words this week. They will just need to complete the packet.
Reading: We will practice reading fluently as we engage in choral reading of fun Halloween poems. We will also continue studying the strategies of cause/effect and predicting. Students will read chapter books as their level while practicing these strategies. The will also use context clues and dictionaries for words they do not know.
English: The haunted house graphic organizer (rough draft) is due on Monday. Students should also check that they have included everything on the rubric in their haunted house description. We will write our final drafts on Monday, October 29th. Then we will begin the study of nouns in unit 2.
